She’s really lucky she wasn’t gravely injured. When it comes to swimming off Del Mar, Solana Beach, or Torrey Pines, I do not agree with the low odds of getting attacked. Why? We are seeing sharks here all the time now and some of them are growing beyond juvenile size >10ft. I’ve seen them from my kayak including a 10 footer off 17th St. last fall. My neighbors go stand up paddling between 15th and the river mouth most mornings and they have had countless sightings of large intimidating whites that are big enough to make them question whether it’s safe to be in the water. We’ve been saying nervously for months that it’s just a matter of time before someone gets attacked, and here we are. These sharks are now big enough to start going after seals and people they mistake for seals. You couldn’t pay me to go swimming around the buoy off of 17th St., but I’ll still take my chances on a surfboard for the time being.

@@valerieosullivan2673 they are not hanging around Del Mar for seals. The seals are several miles to the south and experts say that the mostly juvenile sharks being found/tagged off of Torrey Pines and Del Mar are not old enough to have jaws that are calcified enough to take down seals…yet. They are feeding on plentiful rays and other fish. The swimmer attacked today was swimming right through where we see whites regularly. It will be interesting to learn whether they can determine the sharks size from the swimmer’s injuries.

@@28th_St_Air Thank you. I worry about the La Jolla Cove to Shores swim . It seems there are a lot more sharks than before hanging close to shore than swimming out away to the deeper open ocean.
