Does it matter which way the rim is installed on the bike? I mean is there a difference whether the smaller hole is on the left or the right side? In the rear wheel it's obvious due to the sprocket but does it matter at the front?
@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
Yes it does very much, obviously your tyre is rotational and it must rotate in a forward direction according to the arrows on the side wall, and if it is a cast aluminium wheel, check on the castings on the spokes, they often have an arrow there too to indicate rotation.

I have a 2008 GSF1250 SA. The manual says to install the right wheel bearing then the spacer followed by the left bearing, leaving "clearance" between the spacer and the left bearing. The spacer is longer than the distance between the bearing seats. I obviously installed them wrong because the spacer was wedged in between. So for my second go, how much "clearance" is appropriate? and I'm assuming the proper way is to keep checking the clearance as the bearing gets close? Or is there a depth measurement?
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
"Clearance" just means to NOT wedge the spacer tube solid.. press the second bearing in gently, stop once you feel it seat, and then the tube should be able to shift under light pressure so it can line up with the axle... to my knowledge there is not measurement !

Hi mate, i actually didn't make those discs to any specific size, they about 60mm in diameter with a hole big enough to take the threaded rod... as long as they overlap the outer ring of the bearing and press flat against it they work fine.. and if i want to push more precisely, i use a socket that very slightly smaller than the bearing outer..Hope that helps you mate, and good luck with yours.. Too right my friend, not just the concept of smacking them in, but dropping freezing cold metal in to a red hot hole, that's gonna case harden it in a moment making it brittle surely, like quenching hot metal in water... room temperature, then just press them in gently, works every time!

Yes mate, not loose so that it moves side to side in the wheel, there should be no plan between the bearings, but it should only kiss each bearing gently so that if you stick your finger in the hole, you should be able to shift the tube around with some effort.

Hi del, im putting in new wheel bearings, the bearings should be flush(tight) against the spacer yes? Holding it in place? The spacer shouldnt be moving around or wiggling around right? It should be held in place by the bearings? @Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Ho Johny, Its pretty simple stuff, often made so much easier just to see it done aye.. . I made the steel discs from some 5mm plate, drilled a hole then just made them round with a grinder.. works fine.. .and with the sockets, the trick is to use a socket thats the same size as the outer ring of the bearing (or very slightly smaller), and then they press exactly on the outer steel ring and not the bearing grease cover..!! last year i invested in a 3/4 drive jumbo socket set, big money, but so useful now.. i have sockets right out to 48mm, great for top yoke centre nuts, big wheel axle nuts, and of course a great range of bearing press dies..lol..

I've always been a firm believer with all manufacturers of all bikes and cars, that these vehicles manufacturers don't 'make' bearings, they buy them, along with so many other components, also they all charge a premium through the parts counter for those bearings, and very often I've been able to find out what they actually are, for instance, Timken or All Balls, etc., and then buy them online at a third of the price... after all, you can only charge so much for a wheel bearing, they're not a complicated component!

A video showing the correct way to install oil/grease seals and the reasoning how the lip/spring on the seal keeps the grease in and the dust out would be helpful to some.Most manuals don't show the fine details of which way the seal should be installed.
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
As an absolute rule all bearing seals (if you examine them) have a 'closed' side and an 'open' side, it may visually vary in looks, but no matter what, one side will always look slightly open and the other sealed, they always fit with the open side facing inwards to keep the grease in and then the outside sealed face to keep the dust out... it's a general rule for all oil seals buddy

Thanks for your videos, they do help me a lot.
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Hi there.. IM not sure which pinch bolts you mean for a wheel bearing replacement, do you mean the fork yoke pinch bolts maybe?.. either way, with any stripped out allen heads, you can take a 'Torx" bit, one that doesn't quite fit in the hole, then take a small hammer and tap it gently into the hole so it bites on the head.. and you can usually shift it... give that a go and see how you get on mate.. Good luck.. Del.

@@Moonfleet41 Hi Del. Sorry to bother you I know you are a busy man, but in regards to the torx bits. The T40 bit is a bit too slack, and the T45 seems a little bit too big - am I better off grinding the t45 down a bit to get it to fit? I don't really have the tools to grind it so I might just be better of taking it to mechanic.
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
@@hunterjg777 No, that's correct... the T45 is the one you need, it needs to be a bit too big, and if you can, line up the splines of the torx bit with the corners in the screw head, and then tap it in with a small hammer till it reaches the bottom, all the way in... it will chew its way in and jam completely, which is what you need... the torx bit is very hard and the screw head is very soft, so once you apply pressure to the torx bit to rotate it, it usually chews it's way in to the screw head peeling off shavings between the splines and it locks up and should crack the screw open... it may cost you the torx bit, but they're cheaper than a mechanic and easy to replace, that's what tools are for! Give that a try and let us know how you get on Sir.
@hunterjg7774 жыл бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 it seems like the t45, although I did get it in, didn't stick. Is it worth trying the t50? It seems it might be a bit too large? What are my options now? It's just the one pinch bolt on the left side that's left as well
@HunterHunter885 жыл бұрын
How do you keep the opening ends of the bearings clean? (when you have the wheels on). Do you just keep on top of them with some WD40? I'm referring to when the wheels are still on, just the opening area. Had my wheels replaced recently and it seemed a lot of grit road salt got in that area.
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Your bearings should live behind the dust seal, which you saw me fit at the end (the two black rubber rings), these have a soft lip round the inside, like a mini fork seal, that seals against the axle and prevents water getting in... Also, if you look at the blue ring on the bearing itself, that is also a dust and water seal to keep the water out... so unless you jet wash the bike and do silly things like squirt the water at the bearing, then they should stay dry in there...

I find a hot air gun and infrared thermometer (£15 amazon) helps when removing and installing bearings. Usually 80C is enough. Loving the look already minus the fairings and screen. Fair play to you fella!

Watching the new wheel bearing go in, all I could think is "smart ass". Never see this done in the past but I love the creativity for a diy tool!
