Nice to see different approach. I created my sub frame first, and mounted the tank as a last thing...but then again I was changing the tank position completely, so it's a different story altogether. Executed with precision.

I LOVE how you did yours brother, i can usually tell what a design is gonna be after the first few mock up stages.. but you had me guessing all the way through, and it looks awesome.. i wanted to do just a tiny suspended seat here. but sadly i have to contain thew battery, and all the loom in there too.. so its a task of minimal containment and disguise.. next i have to mount a second lower brace that will pick up the central frame platform that holds the top of the shock, thats a strong enough seat for the weight of the whole tail to stand on.... and its off center too.. wish me luck.
@MackieBass
@MackieBass 6 жыл бұрын
Good luck ;) Maybe use (thick) sheet metal fabrication method, like I did, as oppose to metal bars/tubes etc. This way you can create a little tray for all the electrics and relays and shit... You got man!

LMAO! We are beginning almost the exact same project! I will be soon welding up a subframe similar to this for Melly's 1987 Honda Rebel CMX 250 Barney. I have to make it up to mount the Street Tracker seat & tail unit. So will be highly interested in watching how this progresses. Love watching the fabrication. Welds lookin pretty good too. Hope mine end up nice. Still got to set up my Hobart Handler 140 Mig welder. Take Care! Mike & Melly

Hey Both, great to hear from you.. and im glad you're finally getting to grips with the fabrication.. maybe get some practice in with a garden sculpture or make a BBQ grill or something.. just to get the power and wire speed settings right first... most Jap bike subframes are made from no more then 1mm wall tubing, and its so easy to blow through.. it helps if you;re struggling with it to just stack tacks rather then try to seam weld it.. those smaller machines are restrictive on the power levels, you end up between settings so its all or nothing..!.. good luck with it buddy, and have fun.. Del & Pennyx

You read my mind, I literaly just took delivery of mine, it's a lithium YTX12 equivalent, and yep, weighs as much as a jam doughnut and it is, indeed, smaller ! I don't need it yet, but I got it now for the size so can make the battery box around it...

Will a steel subframe end up a lot heavier than the ally or is there going to be less material? Not criticising just curious as a lot of weight has been saved anyway so not like a few of would matter. Love watching the fabrication videos. Maybe one day I'll actually get a welder and give it a go.
@KevDoogan
@KevDoogan 6 жыл бұрын
suzuki etc - I was thinking the same myself. How will the steel subframe, belly pan and nose affect the overall weight . SF looking great so far can't wait for the finished product 👍
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
suzuki etc - Hi mate, in a recent video, I weighed all the body work against what I'd removed from the beginning, and the bike is 7kgs lighter with the old tail I built, I've removed the big sheet metal tail now, the frame had never come in to it, as it was staying on the bike, but now it's gone, I've weighed it against the other removal parts, and even though it's ali, it weighs 5kgs just by itself, it's made from 3mm thick square well box tubing, and it's braced all over the place... this little steel bridge, and second one I'm making to go below it for Saturday, will be all the steel frame that there is.. from this point, I'll be welding thick sheet metal to make a battery box and electrics carrier, which will be small and then, finally, some small decorative thin sheet metal round the outside... all in all, it will be way lighter than the existing 7kgs saving, so am on the right side at this point!

Looks like a bloody great scaffolding don’t it? Maybe a springy single seat suspended invisibly? Looks miles better without that stuff, probably 5 kilos lighter. Nice vid again mate.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
You know it buddy, that aluminium tail frame was 5kgs by itself, so they'll be some big savings... a suspended seat would be cool, but this bike offers absolutely nowhere else to put the battery, ECU, fuse box etc., so gotta cunningly disguise it all inside the tail... and still keep it small lol !

As you'll see on Saturday, I need a second bridge to go across lower down , it needs to rise up to the brace platform on top of the shock, so whilst what you say is logical, I can't go straight across with it, I need to pick up that central support for strength... check in Saturday and you'll see !

It's all planned that way my friend, the next video is the build of the lower bridge, which has to pick up the support platform in the centre of the frame for strength, then I have to brace the two bridges together in to one, and from there, yes I can bring a battery box straight off the back of that, also a space for electrics etc., ECU, fuses, relays and whatnot... then a sheet metal tail round the outside of it...!

How hard is it in the UK to get a heavily modified bike like this on the road legally? Awesome video!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
No problem at all Tom, it was already a registered bike, the existing registration papers are still valid, all it has to do is conform to MOT standards, and im good to go.. Its a little harder to get a total scratch built bike on the road, something with no frame number and an obscure engine with no papers.. then you have to jump through a few hoops.. but its all doable if you are determined and do everything to a high standard..

Hi Matt, so good to hear from you again... you know what? I don't mind saying that I've surprised myself in the last few videos at how I've managed to pick up the knack of getting all the settings on the machine right , along with the wire speed and passing speed, they're not always perfect, am still making mistakes now and then, but it seems that it's a lot less often, and in the two videos this week, you'll see they're getting even better still - these ones to come this week I am proper proud of - thank you for your ever present kind support, it makes so much difference... all the best, your friends in England, D&Px
