Hello Del. I've just taken out and reinstalled my 2020 Softail Harley. With the altered tolerance in the new spacer will their be any issue when the axle/spacer heats up? (I have no idea how hot either would get, so maybe irrelevant...)
@motorbikemad0015 жыл бұрын
The axle or spindle and spacers aren't moving parts, the spacer faces up to the wheel bearing which is the moving part, there's also a spacer in the centre of the wheel between the two wheel bearings to take the stress when the spindle is torqued up.
@brucemilne87805 жыл бұрын
@@motorbikemad001 Ah, very good point. And I knew that. I think I've been sitting in front of this computer for far too long and my brain is starting to liquify... :D
@picassoimpaler32435 жыл бұрын
@@brucemilne8780 your not wrong, the bearing will still transfer heat into the spacer and the force onto the axle will also make heat through minor bending stresses. That being said, I doubt it would become an issue because 1) this isnt going to be a rossi track bike that loads the axle with ridiculous force around corners and 2) The materials are going to be very similar in thermal expansion rate since they are the same (or very close) material. I like the way your thinking though!
@brucemilne87805 жыл бұрын
@@picassoimpaler3243 I agree that it's not a track bike and experiencing those forces, so probably not an issue. I was thinking initially more of the weight of all that HD sitting on the axle and upping the friction and so more heat, etc etc.

NEED YOUR ADVICE PLEASE I am curious on your opinion about using the same oil to change all three areas in my new 2018 road king? I would like to know what you recommend and why...
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Talk with your Harley dealer, maybe get a word with one of their master Tech's and ask them about "Screaming Eagle Syn3", it's developed initially for the V-Rod racing engines, and exceeds all of the recommended oils for your bike..so it's been long accepted by many Harley owners to use it in all three holes.... Now because you have a bike that is practically brand new, and will be one of the later modern motors, (107ci i presume?) then i would take the advice of the technicians at the dealership and go with their advice.. mainly because your bike is still very much under manufacturers warranty, and its important to follow the right advice.. I hope that helps.. let me know what they say as im always interested in what the factory guys have to say... Good luck.. Del.

I have the same FXDWG (01) with the stock spoke wheel. I have no issues what so ever with a 150mm rear instead of the stock 130mm. Mind you i installed a Metzeler ME 880 then the upgraded ME888 at replacement. The Metzeler has minimal expansion when heated under load therefore no rubbing issues tho very tight between the fender. This i am told (and so far holding true) will not work with a Dunlop, Michelin or others because they expand alot when heated up. When i did this i was very, very sceptical but the mechanic guaranteed it so i pulled the trigger and could not have been happier and looks great with that meaty 150 out back.
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you saw in a recent video but i showed the clearance between the tyre wall and the belt.. and its about 3mm... not sure if you have a slim belt conversion, but mine still runs the full width 1"1/2 inch belt and there is no room for a bigger tyre, the belt would even hit a 140 let alone any wider....

Just love your channel! Last year I knew absolutely nothing about motorcycles, except that I really liked them and wanted a Harley since I was a kid. Just over a year ago I bought myself a Softail and thanks to the “Harley Softail Service series”, which brought me to your channel, I’m now doing all the maintenance myself!! Recently I got new wheels, discs and pulley. The hubs have threads to bolt into and are billet aluminum. Now I have searching for the correct torque settings for the bolts (5/16 UNC, 3/8 UNC and 7/16 UNC all torx heads) in to aluminum, but couldn’t find a clear answer. Would you by any chance know the correct torque setting or where to look it up? Greetings from Holland
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Hi Vlores, Thank you for your kind feedback my friend, It's so good to hear you have a Harley now and keep it in good shape by yourself.. that makes me hugely proud to know that we have maybe inspired that... Thank you so much for that support.. For your wheels, all of the torque range values will be listed in the HD Workshop Manual, If you do not have one, they are a fantastic investment, and something you should certainly have in your garage.. Get the direct from your local HD main dealer.. they are expensive.. (about £70 over here), but money very well spent, you will find yourself turning to it every time you do anything on your bike... i use mine all the time... I could look up the range values for you in my book, but i fear that they could be different for my 99" Dyna Wide Glide.. i don't have a manual for new Softail. Hope that helps you in some way Vlores, Good luck with your bike my friend, keep in touch and let us know how you get on... Del..
@koistory57445 жыл бұрын
Del, thank you for the quick response! You and Penny inspired that without any doubt. I mean, everything is so clearly described and pictured, that it feels like I’m following a course and I could even build my own motorcycle. And I think I will! For the Manual, I do actually have one but was guessing the torque range values would be different for aluminum. I’ve got a FLSTN ‘96 and for example, according to the manual, the range for the pulley on the stock hub with locknuts, is 75-88 Nm. Now, that seemed a little high to me and I was afraid to strip the aluminum threads. Or shouldn’t that be a problem?
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Hi again Vlores, Ok, just checked my Dyna manual, and on the sprocket bolts, it gives two values.... for "Laced wheels" it gives 61-75Nm, and for "Cast Wheels" it gives 75-88 Nm... So as you can see it varies, and that always encourages doubt... so if this was my install, i would contact the supplier/manufacturer of the actual wheels, and ask them what torque value they recommend.. they will know that the exact material is that the wheels are made from, and should have the right data for basic specs such as fitting wheels and discs.... And obviously, don't forget the Threadlock on each bolt..! Sorry i can't be more specific mate.. hope that helps in some way... Del.
@koistory57445 жыл бұрын
Ok, yes that indeed varies. Thanks for checking and it certainly helps! I have emailed the supplier so hopefully they can help. Yes I will not forget that threadlock!! Got myself the loctite 2701 as you recommended...Thanks again for your help and kindness and good luck with the Hyabusa project!

@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
OK, I get that you don't like it, but stick with it chaps... bobbers are short and stumpy with upright forks, like a StreetBob or FatBob, but the Dyna Wide Glide has 5 degrees shallower forks rake and is almost 3" longer, a chopped up half length rear fender would make the back end look unfinished... and out of context with the steeper raked forks, a bit like the Marlborough Man bike, the back of that just looked odd... at least 6 Harleys have had a ducktail fender, it's one of their most classic looks and as the old saying goes, there's more to life than bobbers lol Stick with it., you'll see...!!!

Quick question: should you not torque in a star pattern? Wasn't clear from this vid if you did or Didn't? Also is that tyre clearance correct? I'd have thought 3mm would be easy to eat into with a heavier rider or a lower pressure in the tyre?
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking a star pattern is preferable in any situation, but no so necessary here, the bolts are only 4" apart, it's a thick solid pulley against a solid hub, there's no gasket involved and it's not a large unstable engine casing, which always needs the correct torque down order... but I did do the discs in a star pattern, as specially with the front one, that little alloy spacer ring is an interference fit and the disc carrier squeezes down over it... good observation my friend, really appreciate your engagament...
@mightyreta5 жыл бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 I was always told by my dad (maritime engineer so may be different) that you got false torque readings if you didn't star torque anything that rotated. Essentially if you torque down in a circular manner, you can pull one side of the disk out. I. E. You tighten say 2 bolts on the one side the opposite side lifts slightly off the mating surface. Then when you reach the lifted side of the disk, you the torque setting before you have even overcome this lift on the disk? Ergo you have all bolts "torqued" to the same setting but your disk is not running true. Tolerances are probably greater with the size of stuff my dad used to work on so possibly a moot point.

How do you set your belt tension Dell? It's something I struggle with, had a Thunderbird now a Softail both with belts of course and I find it a bit of a pain even when I use the tension gauge!
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, ok great question... there is a tool that the masters techs use at the dealership called a deflectometer and basically it's a spring loaded measuring device and you push it against the belt once tensioned, and it gives you a measure of how tight the belt is..but without it, you're left to guess and the simple method I use personally (cos there's no way I'm investing in a deflect-o'-meter!), is tension the belt so that with your thumb you cannot push it beyond the range of that little slot in the belt guard with the measuring marks on it...in fact I keep it to no more than 3/4" movement from the straight line pushed in one direction... Belts need to be reasonably tight, but not too tight... and this method works fine for me... hope that helps a bit Paul, see how you get on with that, if you have a Harley manual for your bike, it'll probably give you a more specific range of measurement for your bike but don't over think it mate cos the amount of tension you will feel with your thumb varies according to temperature. they're a lot stiffer in freezing cold weather than on a hot day, but that doesn't mean you need to go adjusting it for the weather.

@Delboy's Garage I live in surrey and need a front wheel spacer made. I have converted my KTM EXC-F 250cc to a supermoto and the spacers provided are 0.05mm too narrow. At the moment I have the spacers provided and a 0.05mm Shim washer on and I dont trust that it will be strong enough to ride. could you tell me how I would go about having a new spacer made, I do not have a lathe like yourself and Ive tried google searching machine shops to have new spacers made but I dont seem to have much luck. Could you point me in the direction of a company that would be able to create these or could I send the current spacer to yourself and you create one for a fee.

Another first class video. I never tire of watching you at work. Although I have been riding and fixing for 46 years I am still learning from you. Keep them coming. One question: what are you doing with the setsquare and straight edge off the tool itself?
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Hi both, hope you're well, thank you for your kind words... the ruler and set square is to measure the tool height, you trap the rule against the work piece and naturally being round, if the tool is precisely in the centre, then the rule will stand dead upright, and you check that with the set square because the tool post is dead flat with the bed! ...it's a quick way of checking too height without having to centre it withe the tail stock!

@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, leaving it chrome, I like the contrast between black and chrome and I'm keen to avoid the bike looking like a dark custom model, needs some highlights!
@picassoimpaler32435 жыл бұрын
would definitely suggest using washers of different thicknesses if your using this method. the 2mm (just a guess) isnt going to be accurate enough to get you where you want if your going through all the work for these custom spacers. You dont want your swingarm bowing inward when you torque the rear wheel down, as it seems to from the footage here. Even though its a small amount, that is quite a lot of tension within the swingarm if its being bent in. If your spending all that time to do something precision, you might as well go all the way. Just my opinion
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
All swing arms spring out when released, some more than others, and with mine, it springs out to the exact amount right now, as it did with the factory spacer and the factory wheel, so I've got the spacing correct... also, the est gauge of all is the length of the axle, when my axle nut is done up, I have just two threads clear in the open, so any wider and I wouldn't be able to insert the split pin through the castle nut... good points well made though, my friend, thanks for sharing your insight, much appreciated!

@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, great info, well posted, thanks for that, you are correct in every way... there are variations between models and it's important to get it right... little tip for ya, if it helps... you can add those marks to your swing arm, simple method... measure the swing arm pivot to axle both sides and get it absolutely bang on, take an hour to make sure it is perfect to withint 1/2mm... then measure from the axle 3" forward and pop a centre punch mark, once you've checked that the centre punch marks are bang on equal with the swing arm pivot either side, and you know you are absolutely correct, stick a 3mm drill through the centre punch mark... and then you'll have them to use for the future! ... PP says "Hi and thanks x"!

Good evening, I know this question is not about this video but I do value your opinion. I might be going to look at a 05 Triumph Daytona with 6k miles on it for $3,000. What do you personally think about Triumphs. One of the Down side is availability of parts. Thanks man:)
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, interesting queston, am probably biased to answer such a question as we have two Triumphs in our garage already, and obviously being in England, all the parts we could ever want are on the shelf, so that's never really been an issue for us... so I guess it depends where you live, but in terms of reliability and sound investment in value terms, you couldn't do better... we've found ours to be reliable, easy to work and fun to ride... !
