The ohms difference you saw (.03 to .04) when you measured your first glass fuse was through your hands and body. It's helpful to be aware that if your hands are touching both leads, you're reading parallel resistance through your body.

Hi. just joined patreon. Got today from ebay a coffee mug that heats water so you can have a coffee, or soap or tea or evan a warm toddy if you are at the end of riding for the day. Anyway might as well try it out. plugged into lighter socket with couple crockadile clips connected to that old bike battery. Well it workd an hour after pluggin I got a hot cuppa. That will make my journeys more fun. I enjoy coffee on my own, now independant from cafes, voltage at 12.75. not bad.. Cheers guys.

Nice "basics only" video, but I think there is one pretty important basic thing to know about multimeters that was not covered: don't EVER try to measure current "directly". That is switch the meter to measure amps and connect it directly to a current source like a car/bike battery or even worse - the mains. You WILL blow the fuse in the meter, or if the meter doesn't have one (some of the cheap ones don't) blow the meter itself and possibly your hand with it. All the amps ranges in all the meters (except clamp meters, but that's a different story) are about measuring current flowing in a circuit. So if you connect the meter set to measure amps directly across a battery, that's essentially a dead short. That's why the amps measurement usually has it's own separate input jack - so that you don't blow your meter accidently while switching through the different ranges.
@RenchRanch8 жыл бұрын
Another function of the Multi-Meter that is extremely useful is the continuity checker (also know as a diode check). I know you can check continuity with the other modes but there is one built-in for this task. The symbol is the sideways triangle with the line on it. On most MM's it will "beep" if the leads are touching together when set to this mode. This is a very useful way to check for a short (a wire grounding against something it's not supposed to), or that a wire isn't broken along its length. When you hear a beep you know that the 9Vdc battery inside the Multi-Meter has a path from the positive wire to the negative (you can just touch the leads together to test it). I beep test stuff as a quick way to verify a circuit before I crack into using the Volt or Ohm meter. Great video as always, clear and concise. The image quality of the video looks wonderful. Cheers! Mike & Melly

It's good the video shows one doesn't have to have a really expensive professional meter to do the sort of checks you will do as a home mechanic, but, for the people who don't already have one, may I suggest spending a couple of Pounds more for one which has an audible continuity check function. You should still expect to pay less than 30 Pounds and, as a bonus, some of those meters come with a temperature range and probe as well, which is very useful at times. Anyway, audible continuity check function, you won't regret it.
@JVerschueren8 жыл бұрын
I've worked in electronics for most of my career thus far as well and I agree with you. This sort of multimeter is not fit for purpose in electronics or professional applications. However, for basic troubleshooting on bikes, cars and around the home, they're perfectly adequate. Just that, like I said, I consider an audible continuity check a must/luxury one should afford oneself.
@davidholden26588 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I'm no electrician but the audible continuity check is a great feature. Much easier than reading the resistance off the screen, especially if you're working ion something in an awkward place.

Great! So next show us how to check for a broken circuit and/or a short circuit, and hunt down the location of it. As I understand it, the voltage meter (for motorcycles, set it at 20v) is for checking the health of your battery. And the Ohm meter (that horseshoe shaped symbol) is for checking circuits.
@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, Im not planning on making a series of videos on electrics...it a huge subject and could take over the whole channel, this was just a walk through of the tool and a couple of basic checks.. like i said in the video, once you know how to make those checks, then you can start working out how to diagnose faults.. but if you cant even read the meter, or interpret the data, then you cant even start.

Fantastic video. I recognise the need for a Multimeter and have needed to use them to trouble shoot things, but being scared of electricity and not understanding how they work I never used it. And because I didn't understand the manual or the language used It lay in a drawer. I actually paused the video you made & wrote with a permanent marker on the meter the relevant settings. But like you said, interpreting the readings is another thing altogether. You never went into Amps. I'm trouble shooting a 1986 heritage softail, nothing big, just issues. would amp readings be used much in fault finings

Any thoughts on diagnosing a munted horn on my scrambler? The fuse looks good but I don't seem to be getting voltage across the pins on the horn. Maybe run my own cable? Or maybe the button doesn't work?
@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, good to hear from you again, and sorry to hear about your horny issue..lol Ok, its just a case of tracing the break in live feed...presuming the terminals are the correct way round on the horn?. Change the fuse, even if it looks ok, then you know its not that.. then, with ignition 'On', check for feed up at the switch, (just open the switch block and you'll see the wires inside on the back of the horn button), check for a live feed into the button, then 'press' the horn button to check the feed wire out, if it reads live, then that will confirm the horn button is working... Check any plugs on the way down to the horn, (there will be at least one as the switch block will have its own length of harness so it can be removed).... no need to check those plugs for live feed, just make sure they are firmly plugged in... Then check the feed wire into the horn itself... if you have feed going in, but no sound.. then the horn is suspect.. so take it off the bike, stick a length of wire onto each terminal, and bridge it across the battery... if it works, then you maybe have an earth problem, perhaps the way the horn bolts to the frame, that can get corroded as its in the path of all the road grime.?... Those are all the things to check my friend, see what you find at each check point and let me know.. there is a remedy for everything, the devil task with electrics is just tracing it... Good luck, and let us know how you get on buddy.. fingers crossed and all the best, Del.

I recommend getting an auto ranging meter, even if its a cheap one it better than the old style where you have to select the ranges, if you want a really accurate and safe one for use at mains voltages then look at high quality CAT rated ones Fluke are well regarded.
