You are sacrifcin the advantage of less power consumption of LEDs when you add a resistance in series. The proper way is to change the relay. The problem is not too much current but too little current drawn by LEDs.

Adding a resistor to replicate the resistance of the tungsten bulb is not the best way to install LED indicators. Substituting an electronic relay for the original (probably electro-mechanical) one is far more preferable - think of all those amps you save by doing so! The resistors are also a heat risk that is best not to have Will your open turbo meet noise requirements? Also, what about the potential for flames to emit from the turbo, which the silencer effectively eliminates on a well set up installation?
@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
Hi Clive, just being cheap with the resistors, the last owner gave me them with the bike, and even if they were splice in ones i would have binned them and fitted a relay... but as they were plug in ones, i just took the easy option and and bunged em in.. you are dead right, a proper LED relay is the best option... and with the Turbo, they arent that loud actually, not as loud as an open race can, the fan acts as a silencer and also provides back pressure to the head... and no, it wont spit flames, its only pushing 5psi of boost, very tame in turbo terms mate... check a few out on the tube, its a unique sound, but not overtly loud..

it's funny how you said everyone gets a bit weird about electrics - not me! I grew up messing around with crystal radios and transistors later, I can track down pretty much any electrical issue with a multimeter and a test lamp. For years, gearboxes were a complete mystery to me - all sorts of vague things to go wrong, I was never confident I could get all those things back in the right order. For some reason I've got some kind of phobia about pulling my forks apart, I've got no idea why. Everyone's got their thing. It's great you [and others] put out all these videos on youtube, no matter how much you know there's always something else to learn! :)

Purchasing the appropriate plug in replacement LED flasher unit is the most sensible and simpler way when retrofitting LED indicators in place of tungsten lamps. Something to watch out for is some LED retro fit lamps have in-built current bias resistors (not to be confused with the current limiting resistor the LED requires) to provide the same load as a 21W tungsten lamp, in order to correct the flash rate and if present fool electronic detection of failed bulb with in the vehicle management system. These particular ones can run too hot due to inadequate heat dissipation because of the inclusion of bias resistor, which is often under rated for the application and cause the lamp fail prematurity. In the worst cases they can burn up.
@JVerschueren7 жыл бұрын
Ooooh... poor explanation there. There's not 'too much current going down the line', which needs to be 'absorbed'. There's too little current being drawn, so some current needs to be shunted accross the LED indicator to trick the system into 'thinking' there's a bulb.
@MrMattthompson927 жыл бұрын
Your explanation is also wrong. An Led has almost no resistance, meaning there's far too much current flowing around the circuit, almost like a short circuit. Resistors need to be added to reduce the current.
@incandescentwithrage7 жыл бұрын
Thomo 1 Nope, the OP was right. These LEDs are designed for the application so they have built in current limiting resistance, or multiple diodes in series to increase the forward voltage drop. If it had "almost no resistance" it would die very quickly. The resistor is in parallel to increase current draw, not in series to decrease it.
@MrMattthompson927 жыл бұрын
IncandescentwithRage, you're right. I didn't know indicators were fitted with built in resistors and my understanding of how a flasher worked in relation to current was backwards. The indicators actually have a much higher resistance than the standards bulbs, meaning very little current flows. Causing a fast flash. Adding the resistor in parallel reduces the overall resistance of the circuit allowing more current to flow and slowing down the flash.
@HalfdeadRider7 жыл бұрын
All I know is that LED's are not bulbs (obvious if you know lol) and that they just need a current passing through to work. Wheather they use/draw current idk, my guess would have been if any it would be a tiny amount. Mechanics are only taught enough about electronics to be able to do basic work really, not to understand electronics at an expert level.
@incandescentwithrage7 жыл бұрын
Thomo 1 Yeah that's the way it does it. You have the same with modern(ish) cars that will warn you a bulb is out if you fit 'basic' LEDs. If you look on eBay etc for CANBUS compatible LEDs, they have a built in parallel resistor to pull the current expected from a 5w. To replace larger bulbs, yeah you need external resistors to handle the heat dissipation, or a £10 LED flasher. Constant current (instead of voltage) LED drivers are used for the really bright ones.
@KarlTheDingbat7 жыл бұрын
I just tend to go for the solid state relays, they will work for both bulb and led, the price difference is negligible as well. It is usually just a straight swap, but I did have to swap around a couple of leads in the connector block the last time I did it.

nice install i did the resistors as well, but then ended up swapping out the flash relay for a led one. What i did for the rear turn signals was a 4 way trailer convertor, basically u hook up DRL/break/left and right signal /ground and the out put is 5 wires left/right and ground. since the bandit has 2 break light bulbs and 2 elements per bulbs. how it hooked up low element both bulbs is DRL, high element is break/ signal. The trailer convertor take care of the break and signal on at the same time, this can be done with 4 relays as well but the convertor comes in a nice small package which looks very clean. Hope this can help some one who wants to just get rid of the rear signals for a tail tidy, but still needs/ wants indicators

@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
No Jason.. if they sometimes flash faster, thats probably a bulb that either has a loose or bad connection and is disconnecting now and again.... next time it happen, look front and rear of that side to see which one is out, and replace it... also check the connection, all indicators plug into the loom about 9 inches from the light.. so check that its plugged in ok too..

Really interested in your Vids, can i ask where do you stand when you mot the bike, do you have to take steps to quieten the noise output ? I have a 1400 and id love to turbo her.
@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve.., two answers to that buddy... firstly we dont have any noise regulation for MOT here in the UK, all it needs to be is "not defective" and not have "Race use only" written on it... so they cant fail for noise alone.. although you can get an "Advisory" on the test certificate. The other issue is that a Turbo itself acts like a baffle... the little spinning fan in the exhaust quietens it down a lot even thought its a bit aggressive sounding..

Good easy going video . Handy double tail ends on the heat sink resistors . I bought a bike that the person before wired them in series which dropped the voltage on the indicator . So the led was v dull. Which explained why people didn't know where i was turning into on my home from picking the bike lol .
@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, yeah, i think the main message i wanted to get across here was that the resistor needs to be bridged accross the terminals, not wired inline which may look like the most logical way...

Hi Damion, I've had that with my ZX7R, I put the single bar end indicators in, they flashed fine, but too fast, I changed the relay, which slowed them down, but like yours, my dash light stayed on... so I put resistors in the system instead of the relay, they now flash at the right rate and the dash light works .. .I think sometimes these relays are the problem, every other time I've used them, they've been fine!... Sorry i can't be more help, that's just what happened to me mate... best of luck with it...

Great video however for $10 you could just go up to the local Auto parts store and pickup a 12V LED flasher relay and its a direct replacement fit to the original one. Its what I did with my 75 Honda took 2 seconds to replace the old one. If however you like doing this, it works just as well and gives you experience with wiring and is pretty easy to do as Dell showed.

Load resistors added to the indicator circuit could possibly make the LED output less light. Just something to watch for. It depends on the brand of LED indicators and how many individual LED elements are clustered together. This is why the solid state flasher relay designed for LED's works better than electro-mechanical as it won't dim the indicators. But either method works fine. Some companies have so many tiny LED's clustered together that the combined internal resistance is similar to an incandescent bulb so the old flasher works fine. IMHO, one solution is not any "better" than the other in reality as long as the indicators blink at the correct rate and the light output is acceptable. More than one way to do it. But you can never beat FREE!!! LOL. Having the load resistors already = free = more beer money = best solution! ;-) Cheers! Mike

Thank you for your good comments about electrics in the past I have made up a complete wiring loom for our old BSA and tried to keep it nearest to the original manufacturer specs what did think of our petition about non-paying vehicle excise duty drivers ?

it's weird that the resistor has 4 poles - I would have thought it would just be in line with the live wires
@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
I guess thats the common sense theory.. but they go across the pos and neg to replace the bulb thats missing... its still better to fit an LED relay in the first place. but i had these handy and they just plug in...
@leemarshall95015 жыл бұрын
bang on vid loved it
@TroubadourJuggernaut7 жыл бұрын
The comments on this particular video are beyond annoying .... "cut zip ties square" "use proper LED relay" I would love to watch some of the commenters videos, oh right, they don't exist.

hi Troubz.. You make a very good point... but this is social media, and you know the drill, everyone gets a voice, everyone can make what ever comment they like...no matter weather its kind, polite, rude or obnoxious... they are all free to criticize all they like..... TBH, yes i can fit a dedicated relay instead, thats a more 'professional' way to do it.. but i was given the resistors free with the bike ,and they turned out to be easy plug in ones.. so used what i had... Take care buddy.. Del.

There seems to be far too much bickering and nit picking going on with the channel these days about the correct term used to explain something that is quite obvious to us all . Dont we get enough political correctness thrown at us in our daily lives ?
