If you're at the point where you have a mission to save the earth, and the astronaut has to prep _their own rocket,_ then humanity is _boned_
@kieransaul2711
@kieransaul2711 5 жыл бұрын
If the entire earth is blanketed by dust storms that presumably blot out the sun, humanity's pretty boned anyway. No plants, no food, no oxygen, no life. Presumably the ocean is still doing okay though, because the dust storms wouldn't cover them and algae could still produce oxygen. Maybe the solution here is to genetically engineer humanity to become mermaids. Or everybody lives in coastal or underwater habitats and eats seafood for the rest of their life. Hope you enjoy algae paste and seaweed, because the fish wouldn't last that long.

i mean the planet no longer has any blue to it at a distance and thats generally caused by the oceans so i can only assumed thats fucked too..... i think the plan is to use power from the moon to run hydroponics back on earth to start fixing the shit hole
@kieransaul2711
@kieransaul2711 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, I didn't notice. But if there's no blue then you're right, there's no algae. Hydroponics wouldn't exactly fix anything though, it would just enable humanity to survive. The earth is still fucked. I wonder what the cause of the earth's dusty state is in this setting. Global warming? I'm guessing global warming since the coastlines look different and I didn't see any ice caps. Maybe incessant storms and flooding wiped the earth clean of top soil and everything inland got dried to the bone. Or something happened to the earth's magnetic field just as (le gasp) a massive solar flare erupted and roasted everything to a crisp. Actually, I bet you wouldn't even need a solar flare, the earth's magnetic field weakening or disappearing would probably cause the earth to roast anyway, right? A solar flare would just speed it up.

Yes, actually, a microwave laser (maser) would be able to deliver power to Earth, and not only would be incredibly practical, we also wouldn't have huge antenna arrays or photovoltaic panels everywhere. The receivers could be made of wire mesh that would allow for entire ecosystems to exist underneath them. Probably one of the best options for energy supply we have for the near future: Shoot up solar power gathering satellites, point their microwaves at our planet, and boom! More energy than we'd know what to do with, wherever we need it. And no, those microwaves would not cook you.

That would probably go beyond the energy density that would be achievable by such a system, unless a supervillain were to be the one designing everything in the first place.

I mean the laser would need a very low power flux to not cook the atmosphere on the way through. So the collection antenna would have to be massive. The amount of atmospheric scattering seems like it'd be an issue then though.

As some have already pointed out... Yes, Jon . converting solar energy (collected in space) into microwaves that are then beamed to a receiver station and turned into electricity IS a thing. The basic idea, and almost all of the basic tech, has been around since the 1980s. Another of those things that could solve a lot of problems IF the money was there. But WHY you would have one irreplaceable microwave station on the Moon's surface instead of in several cheaper, more efficient and easier-to- reach satellites in Earth orbit seems odd.
@anumeon

It's a shame that Claire didn't pop in to the cockpit during launch and go "I just wanted to tell you good luck, we're all counting on you" after seeing her message on the back of that schematic thingy.. :D Also,, who in their right mind designs a spacesuit with only 3 minutes of oxygen onboard?? That's like,,, stupid..
@keyz182
@keyz182 5 жыл бұрын
There are proposals for giant solar arrays in geosynchronous orbit beaming energy back to earth via microwaves. A lot more difficult from the moon however, you'd need multiple receiver sites around the world, and an aimable transmitter to move between them, or to track an intermediary relay. Look up Space-based solar power (SBSP) on Wikipedia for more info.

Physics undergrad here, you could beam the power using lasers and having a big receptor on the ground that somehow transforms that into useful energy. And they said MPT which the M stands for microwave. So yeah it could be a microwave laser. And microwaves heat up water really well, you could use a microwave laser to boil water back on earth and move a steam turbine.
@eshafto
@eshafto 5 жыл бұрын
You'd capture them more directly as electrical power in an antenna. For safety reasons, and possibly so you don't arc and dissipate the energy in the atmosphere, the beam would be extremely diffuse and something on the order of kilometers square. A bird flying through the beam would not be affected.

I don't exactly understand all the science behind transmitted power, but my understanding is that, as that energy is transmitted farther and farther, less and less of it actually gets to the place where it's going. It's very inefficient at long distances, so you would need to generate an obscene amount of power to transmit it from the moon to Earth in order to make any appreciable impact.

Cool looking game so far, but what kind of cocking air tank is he using? A scuba tank lasts a couple of hours, the backpack tanks astronauts use last 6 - 8.5 hours (and doesn't use compressed air). What kind of emergency tank gives 10 - 30 seconds of air? Do you know how tiny they would be? It's like those flashlights in horror games that drain batteries in a couple of minutes.

Your question about the power is a good one. It absolutely is possible, the science behind it is good. However it may not be worth it economically, and it creates some difficulties in collection when on Earth. It is hard to get a beam tight enough to go through the atmosphere and hit a specific point without also microwaving everything around it. Plus setting up this system would be incredibly expensive, and if something breaks it would be extremely expensive to fix. Basically, if Earth completely ran out of other energy sources, then this makes a ton of sense and would be incredibly useful. If Earth has other options, then they should really use those.

Most end up running a secondary program inside a PC game that does not accept console gamepad controls. Then players complain, that the game is not registering you using a gamepad in the UI. There is a reason to have right tools for the job you are doing.

So...in the plot of this game the Earth has run out of resources in the near future (2050s) and society is suddenly so ramshackle that it's space program is launching out of somewhere looking like a mid-western trailer park. As MATN mentions, why is the astronaut flying the lunar rocket also flight checking it? Sounds like some dodgy writing for thus game, but it still looks fun! As others have mentioned, yes energy can be transferred over distances via a variety of laser arrays. The problem is humans are notoriously unreliable psychopaths, political activists or religious extremists and misuse of such a facility for mass destruction is inevitable. It's also why we can't ever have nice things such as a space elevator.
