I helped a friend with his optiplex 7010 and I JUST installed this on my old 7010. I will say the top power switch had to be installed upside down for it to work. Other then that it’s all good. When it’s right side up you don’t have any control over the power switch. No idea but it works upside down just fine. It’s a game changer to transform the opti into something more useable and aesthetically pleasing.

I have two Optiplex mid tower 9010’s both with i5’s. I plan on doing a retro build with one with newer hardware. I’ve been watching all of your Optiplex videos including the video about adding air flow. And on that note, I have come up with some fan ideas but have tried it yet. Instead of cutting a hole for a 120 mm fan you can use Dell original cpu cooler fans instead, and if you only use one you can keep the hard drive cage if you so desire. Or remove the hard drive cage and use to fans. The cpu fans are smaller than 80mm, also the rear case fan is a 80mm fan and if you have some extras thes could also be used. Since these are delta fans and they would exceed the two fan headers on the motherboard, you have four sata power plugs in the front of the case.two on top one for the cd drive and an extra at the 5.25 drive bay, and the two on the bottom at the hard drive cages. With the proper adapters you can power one to two delta fans up front with some modding. The cardboard roll Id is the perfect template for cutouts for this style of fan. The speaker and temp sensor doesn’t have to be moved or removed. Since the case isn’t perfectly flat you can make your own stand off’s for the fan to fit the irregularities. I had some rivet nuts laying around and with some small machine screws and nuts this worked perfectly. The thing I wonder is will two 80mm fans bring in enough air flow for a Asus b550 motherboard w/3700x or higher w/ prism cooler, GTX 1080-2080 or R5, R9 or a 6700xt, 6800xt. Any thoughts?
@TheGameBench3 жыл бұрын
I'd say no. I built a system at Christmas for my brother and he needed me to keep the hard drive cage. I was putting in an XFX RX 470, so I needed to add a front fan, so I installed a front 80mm. Even with cutting out the material in front of the fan, the 470 got very warm and the GPU fans had to push pretty hard just to keep it under throttle.

I know you do all the optiplex vids, but I still love some of the old 2nd and 3rd gen lenovo boards. They were great for case swaps. Power is standard. Mounting holes all standard. USB2 headers are not standard but they have like 2 extra pins. You can just ignore when connecting to them and works perfect. The only thing not standard really is the audio header, and you can buy 99 cent adapters from china for that. Those were and still are some of the best boards for cheap builds. Just wish the lenovo 4th gen boards didn't suddenly become so non standard.
@TheGameBench4 жыл бұрын
I'm definitely going to start branching out to other OEM systems, as well as some content that's not directed at OEM builds at all. I tend to avoid Lenovo since they went so far the other way recently. It really irked me that they did GPU whitelisting. Only doubt I have on these adapters is that some of them have the pins outside the main motherboard so need extra space on top and bottom will they fit on a micro atx case?

I suppose that's possible depending on the case and it's clearances, but there's no universal answer. I just measured the overhang it's 5mm.
@Viggen663 жыл бұрын
@@TheGameBenchthanks, 5 mm is more than enough or else as typical micro atx cases you can do a little hole in the bottom as usually these cases, have a plate to divide between the psu and the motherboard you can arrange it, for me a optiplex is beautiful with a modern small case as mt and dt are originally from factory, not normal atx size

Is there one for the sff boards. I really love my optiplex just want a case with more air flow
@TheGameBench2 жыл бұрын
The power button adapter works for the SFF models, but there is an interference issue with the front panel adapter. If you don't mind loosing the front panel audio and USB2, there are ways to make it work without the F1 error.
@Phoenix3Fighter Жыл бұрын
@@TheGameBench I'm looking for something as well for my SFF and removed the front IO for more air flow and have a 19 pin and a 9 pin from that open and I cant find adapters to put there to make those ports usable for things like internal USB.
@martinbell35102 жыл бұрын
These adapters are great for ease of use, however I'm wondering about the economics of this route. Once you've bought these adapters, plus the 8-24 pin power adapter, would it not be nearly the same price just to buy a second hand standard motherboard?
@TheGameBench2 жыл бұрын
Nearly? Perhaps... but it really depends on the board. The cost on something like a decent Haswell motherboard can be near $100, even for something that isn't a Z series chipset. For around $50, you might find something okay for that price, or it might not be as good as the board you're pulling out of the OptiPlex. However, there is a way to do the case swap without the adapters if you don't care about the front panel audio or the USB2 ports. Brian at Tech Yes City showed a way to bypass all those F1 errors without the adapter.
@martinbell35102 жыл бұрын
@@TheGameBench fair enough. And I get that there is satisfaction in repurposing oem parts. What do you think about the newer Optiplexes with 6/7 gen processors?- They seem to be becoming affordable now.

Fun fact: If you happen to own a Bluetooth keyboard. The computer will not recognize any keyboard on boot (because no driver is loaded at the time) which will also throw an error saying no keyboard found. But then it will let you boot into windows without pressing F1 because... well you obviously cannot press F1 to continue. On the login screen, all drivers are loaded correctly, by then the computer will function normally.

I mean for building a gaming pc. I figured its been over a year since your first videos, maybe there newer and better dells or other brands for cheap now that we can add graphics cards to.
@TheGameBench3 жыл бұрын
@@victorsanchez4497 Dell... sadly, not so much. The OptiPlex kinda' took a bad turn after the 20 series. You can, but you either have to stick to GPU's that don't need supplemental power, or modify it with a SFX power supply. Even then, they're cramped and GPU sizing and airflow become and issue. Instead I would suggest looking at the HP Z series. They come with decent sized PSU's for the time, and you can replace them with an adapter, like the xx20. Plenty of room for GPU's and not too hard to add more airflow. I'll agree the the 4th gen is nearing the end of it's useful life for the most part, and while you can move to a 6th gen system... they're going to have similar issue to the 4th gen as will the 7th, being quad cores. They're all limited in cores and the IPC gain isn't huge either. They'll all get beat by a current Ryzen 3 or Intel i3. You just need to find them at the right price to make sense over just building something with a low end CPU that you can easily upgrade when you have more cash.

Hi, I have a question. How dificult is to swap a motherboard from a SFF 3070 to an atx case?
@TheGameBench3 жыл бұрын
Looking at the 7050 MT I have here, which should have the same screw pattern, it's not standard ATX. Only one screw lined up. Looks to be a custom screw pattern.
@ominae13 жыл бұрын
@@TheGameBench Thanks, my concern is more for wires and conectors. I found a very good deal for a dell 3070 with a i5 9500 but that SFF case has no room for a GPU. You think that present more problems than the screws? This is the pc, look where is the pci express slot kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4PKnndpi7eol5Y Thanks again for the answer!

so it wont work on any sff version? i have 9020 sff
@TheGameBench3 жыл бұрын
Nope, the front panel connections on the 9020 SFF are not the same as the MT systems.

@@TheGameBench so if i left the front i/o just dangling inside, would i still get errors?
@TheGameBench3 жыл бұрын
@@three828 Nope. In fact, before these adapters, that's what most people just did. Perfectly viable solution for the front panel. Though you can still get errors from other things like the fans if you're changing them out.

I have a optiplex 7070 mid tower I bought a 1650 oc but it need a higher wat psu I need a psu for the dell optiplex but its too expensive so what do I exactly need to swap the case so i can install a atx psu
@TheGameBench3 жыл бұрын
Well, case swapping the later models with the proprietary chassis becomes more difficult. But there are ways to add a new PSU. I don't believe the xx70 models are using the 12vo standard so you should be able to get an adapter and you can fit an SFX power supply in the MT case. You can cut a hole at the back if you want to, but you should be able to secure it with at least one screw without cutting a hole. It would be a tad jank... but it would work, and be a whole lot less complicated than a case swap. You could still try the case swap, but I don't think the holes will line up with any ATX screw pattern.

@@TheGameBench i need just a 300+ wat cheap psu sfx
@TheGameBench3 жыл бұрын
@@samm8824 The lowest wattage rating I can find on SFX power supplies is 450 watts and the Corsair SF 450 is just under $100 on Amazon. And that's about as cheap as new ones get. If that's too expensive, you can look at FlexATX or TFX. They're like the SFX, they're not made to fit, but they're small enough to fit. Also, the SF 450 is also on Amazon for just over $60 renewed.

Unfortunately these adapters don't work for the SFF systems. The power button adapter might work, but the front panel adapter definitely won't.

Alot of jargon flying over my head here which is my own fault lol. So, instead of modding the original case to fit rx 470, i can find cheapo ATX case and bypass proprietary pitfalls during transplant?

Yep, you've got it.

I don't know this thing is exist, until now. I've got 9020 myself and thinking of case swap.

Does this also bypass the fan error?
@TheGameBench4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, no. That's a separate issue. The fan controller on these are very picky. You can easily adapt from the SL fan headers on the Dell motherboard to a standard 4-pin fan, but you still might get the error as there's some compatibility issue and I've not been able to find a pattern.

Oh boy...another adapter...I’m still glad I’m swapping one fir the learning experience, but I probably won’t do it again, oh well, it’s fun.
