Dell Precision M4700 (Part 1)

got mine for free from a friend back in 2015 and it's been a great laptop since. maxxed out the RAM and it's a good little work horse. writing this comment on it now actually.

I bought an M4800 from Ebay for $335 a few months ago. I'm planning on adding a 480gb msata ssd and maxing out to 32gb of DDR3L. Feels like a great workstation.

I'm watching this on an M4700 I bought on eBay for $25. Best laptop I've ever owned! Runs just about anything you can throw at it, and the batteries age surprisingly well. I mainly bought this one for the quality control/speaker updates vs the M4600s I had before it. PS - The optical drives all sound like that. Nothing wrong with them, they're just loud.

These are great laptops. I have the same unit, very similarly equip. I didnt get the official recovery, I wish I did, but I did change out the hard drive and run the msata with RAID0 using Samsung 840 series. She's a screamer for it's day. I replaced it with a Latitude 5491 six core, but I still go back to my Precision m4700.

I have this laptop but I have one problem... When is plugged in charger I have drop fps for 60 to 15 .... My graphic card is k1000. Can you help me? I try many things but doesn't work.... Thanks

what power adapter do you have? if it's one of the smaller 130w power supplies that will limit performance. I think there is a bios setting to ignore weak charging though. check the power supply make sure its 180w +

Does the batter charge stop when it's full? And then start again when certain threshold is reach(85-95%)? If it does not do it automatically, how to set that? And secondly, have you got problem with over active fan if connected to external monitor? As default it sets itself to maximum when it detects external monitor and concensus seems that only way to control the fan speed is "vBIOS" modification.

Overall I'm glad I bought it. There's no getting away from the aging of the hardware, but I think for the price it was a good buy. You need to get used to the size and the weight of it, but I have found it to be very durable. I haven't dropped it yet (fingers crossed) but I haven't been very gentile with it and it's been fine so far. If I was to do a second part of the review I'd point out that it's weird that the battery is an integral part of the bottom of the laptop - the battery itself contains one of the rubber feet. If you try to hold up the laptop with your right hand running off battery, you'll probably cut power to the machine. It really is a mobile workstation - it's best to use it on a sturdy table. I've had difficulty doing an SSD clone into another 2.5" sata drive but I plan on getting an mSATA drive to use as boot. Maybe once I do that I'll do another part to this video.

So, how did the gaming go on this laptop?

Not great. I think the GPUs DDR3 memory is a bit of a bottleneck. If you turn down textures and some other visual effects manually games tend to run a little better. There is a version of this machine that has an ATI M4000 GPU with GDDR5 memory. I've read that that one runs games a little better. Might actually be slightly cheaper, too!

​@@aurisss89 I got the M4800. Its a great computer that's powerful. I love the keybard on the M4800. The M4700 is the same keyboard as the M4800. The Keyboard is very similar to the IBM Thinkpad labtops from the 2000s

I traded my hp 2000 notebook for a dell precision m4700 it has a Intel core i7 3940xm cpu 15.6 1080p display and 32gb of ddr3 ram and a 256gb msata drive and nivia cpu and Intel HD 4000 graphics and 1tb ssd i installed a blu-ray drive and windows 10 home about to upgrade to windows 11 home

This laptop is not for games, but yes, Fortnite and PUBG will work nice.

Yes you can but it would the fps would be slow because the nvidia quadro k2000m 2gb gpu isn't for games you will need a nvidia gtx card that made for gaming
