Eastway Electrical

Күн бұрын

In this video I carry out fault finding for an earth continuity issue on a ring circuit I discovered last time I was at the property.
Last time I was at the property putting in some power points for the kitchen and I discovered the issue. To resolve the issue I decide the best course of action is to check for loose connections or to split the ring into two radials on 16 Amp MCBs.
Once the earth continuity issue is resolved the customer asks me to take a look at two lights that aren't working in the kitchen. As the connections are above the ceiling, the customer has to remove the carpet and uplift the floorboards to grant access. When he does this it revealed that the the cables are floating in the void of the floor without a junction box.

💯%🤣🤦🏻‍♂️When Delroy started laughing it killed me! Had a job like this where the client wired their own loft conversion...went to a 2 gang switch and you had to have one switch on to make the “New” loft landing light on...he admitted he had done it himself in the end and said he couldn’t get it back to how it should be and he’d lived with it ever since but was now selling 🤣....the pendants were all three plated too

I used to live in a house owned by an electrician (who worked at a nearby power station) it had the original cotton insulated wires in it, some asbestos insulated wires and the new power points were all wired in around the new RCD with way too much wire in between. Australian wiring tends to be simpler than UK or US wiring but we had so much wire l couldn’t get radio in some areas

You wanna say you don't know what your electrician is going to put in? You don't discuss beforehand how they're gonna route stuff and what's going to happen? Not everybody has such an "I don't care" attitude... Also, some people try and fix it themselves before calling an expert, and figure stuff like routing out as part of the debugging process.

@@timderks5960 I'm gonna tell you right now that 9.9 times out of 10 they do not give a shit about how you're gonna do it. Most of the time, all that is discussed is what they want done and where they want it done. Depending on the job or what they want done, I'll tell them what they're options are if I see there's a better way of going about it, or if there's some issue with doing it how the customer wants it. But beyond what they're gonna be using or staring at, they care about as much your average Customer cares about what a car mechanic needs to do beyond "Can you fix it?". If somebody happens to be curious and does want to know, then I'm happy to explain it to them. But it's rarely the case.

@@supremeicecreme1658 Definitely doesn't mean there shouldn't be some fitting to connect it to the ceiling. It looks less industrial and more like a machete showroom in a home store that isn't actually a building, so it doesn't matter if the lights are attached without fittings.

I think the house owner is someone like myself. I worked as a chef and then did a law degree and have worked in welfare. I knew naff all about the standard trades such as electrician, it’s only since I’ve been forced into semi retirement through ill health that I’ve started learning bits of things. Even so I wouldn’t do anything more exciting than wiring a table lamp. I think Damian had a cowboy in and saw where things were put rather than do it himself. People like Damian and myself though good at what we do for a living are prime pickings for a fly guy. How many retired teachers etc fall for the: "I was just passing and saw a loose slate" con? The lights didn’t look good at all, personally I don’t like the idea but it also looks only half executed. First video I've seen of yours, it’s nice to see a decent guy who just wants to do the job right and safe. Subscribed.

US electrician here. Is it legal to have hidden junctions in the UK? Here in the US, all wires must be junctioned in a device box that is accessible, and cannot be done in a floor space between floors unless the box is accessible, usually from a light fixture box or ceiling junction box, and less commonly in a floor box. Buried boxes and junctions are some of the most time consuming faults to find. That is a fire waiting to happen.

I am in SA. our regulations here require every earth termination with 2 or more earths need to be crimped to gather then terminated in box/switch/plug. If you lose a live, or neutral, your equipment will not work. Then requiring back checking to locate a fault. Loosing an earth, never, with great consequences can cause electric shock.

I just wired my house in Ontario Canada, as a home owner you can do your own work and get it inspected by ESA. It's pretty extreme in terms of requirements and learning. All circuits must be AFCI protected from the breaker panel, which means AFCI breakers, which run around $100 each. I used 15 of them lol. AFCI = arc fault circuit interrupter.

journeyman electrician from Canada here thats considering a move to the UK and I got to say for some stuff UK is way above us for safety like Meggering all the lines and having fuses on alot of equipment but then you got other stuff like putting fixture wire through a ceiling to join in somewhere else that isnt really accessible. Its kind of mind boggling to me. I do however love how you sparks get to really take your time to diagnose and wire because here in houses (commercial builds is a bit different) its get in and get out as quick as humanly possible and many companies will try to get away with shoddy work to be the lowest bidder and there are SO many of us sparks so its difficult to keep busy. Still considering a move over to the UK midlands where I have family but dont know if any of my years of experience would even be considered.

The cable going into the ceiling void is not the norm. It’s actually damn right stupid.
@AnimosityGamers
@AnimosityGamers 3 жыл бұрын
@@jurassicsparks5220 I suspected so. Ive seen some other videos form Delroy along with others showing some other stuff that I found strange but probably not the norm like; Steel enclosures outside, Twin & earth outside, Panels at any height (from right at the floor to right at the ceiling), burying a junction box in ceiling or floor and spurring/extending a plug from a kitchen circuit. Are any of these allowable practices or just people leaving the work they find there? Is that ok, to just leave the work and make a note about it? Like if I open a permit on a house here my work is inspected by a city inspector and they can inspect the entire house for code violations that they can then tell the homeowner they need fixed. Come to think of it, I dont think i've ever heard of a inspector in the UK like we have here.

Looks like a council direct labour job from 1970 with subsequent bodges by similar cowboys. Only things missing are all the 1930s and 1950s fittings and cable offcuts left under the floorboards. Almost exactly same as the filthy chaotic mess we found in my daughter's new maisonette. Took a week to sort it out and make it safe

My parents had a new house built. I inspected the caballing and it was worse than you have shown. Although the building inspectors passed it a safe, they never actually checked it because it was wired by a well known reputable builder.

I'm no spark, although during my apprenticeship back in the day you did a but of electrical work, but there is no way I would do that in my house It's was a disaster waiting to happen glad you switched that to a radial but that took some figuring out, no idea why is not a ring some well dodgy wiring there. If I'm getting anything done in my house I like to keep an eye on what's going on, might not know everything but at least you get an idea if the guy doing the work is a cowboy or not.
