I think McPhee is probably the best overall source I've found to understand the type of person that the unit tends to bring in. He talks about the realities of the work which explain the rumors of selection phases. He talks about the mentality and he consistently demonstrates an aptitude for reducing what seems to be complex topics into simple deductions through observation and testing (a quality and skill that I've observed over ALL unit personnel; they almost seem juvenile in how they derive solutions to problems, but it tends to work). He also exhibits what to some would probably seem like a disturbing way to compartmentalize what he even admits is tantamount to murder, sort of a "necessary evil" that because it's necessary isn't actually evil. If I'm not mistaken he's stated several times he was his happiest in the Army as a Ranger.

Pat McNamara was on the Team Never Quit podcast and talked about life in the Unit. He mentioned that guys with 10 years experience in the Unit would get bounced out for bad attitudes or under performing. "We reserve the right to fire your stinking ass" is what he said the mantra was. Other guys I've known over the years, who have served there, have echoed this reality. Ranger or SF experience will just help you prepare better, and give you a better shot of being selected because you've got a degree of requisite skill, knowledge and ability to be successful.

Interesting story - my platoon SGT I was under while in afghanistan actually got an email that he was "selected' to go try out for a new army clandestine unit. Dont know the name of it, for all I know it was Delta/CAG/whatever and when we got back to the US, a month later - he went to this selection course. Mind you, he did 8 deployments with Ranger Batt., he was a leader we all looked up to, a guy you strived to be when you go up in the ranks, deff always set a great example to us joes, and I fought along side him in firefights and the dude was a serious gun fighter and was a joy to serve under him. Came back from the selection course. Finished the entire thing but was not selected on the basis that he has been in the Infantry far too long, and given that fact in conjunction with his age, they determined he most likely wouldn't be a guy who would think too much outside the box, he would be too "by the book" with everything, and because of how long he was in the infantry and his given age - it would be near to impossible- physiologically- for him to break those habits. He wasnt heart broken by it...he actually embraced it. It actually made him realize hes better off in a line unit and thats where hell remain and enjoy the rest of his army career. I guess theres never really any "knowing" on what these units want and/or are looking for. Guess its one of those things where you just gotta go, give it your all, and see if youre the guy theyre looking for

I remember how it seemed like a whole lot of guys.we're going Airborne, and then to one of the two, at that time, Ranger Battalions! With the PT and road marches that we were doing, it sure seemed to change a lot of these guy's minds, very quickly! So, out of all the guys in that big crowd who were talking about going Ranger, in the end, out of about 40 guys who were talking about it, only 4,that I would run into, after my year your in Korea, actually went Ranger! One guy, wasn't a Ranger, in Fort Lewis, Washington, anymore, because he got in a parachute accident! And the other 3 were still hanging tough, in the 2nd Ranger Battalion, as of the last time I talked to them, before I left Fort Lewis, for West Germany! Well, outside 18x etc, if you just want to get exposure, you can always try out for Ranger Bat right after jump school (always get airborne in your contracts gents!) You can also pretty easily get assigned to an SF group as support and see what ODAs do 1st hand. 1-2 times a year a CAG recruiter (delta, ace w/e they call themselves these days) usually some e-6 or e-7 in civilian clothes handing out a pamphlet and talking for a few minutes. When I was at 1st SFG (a) in Fort Lewis (2000-2004) I was in 3rd BN, the CSM at the time was Jody Nacey, former CAG CSM and served with John Macejunas, former CAG operator ... and let me just say this. Jody was quiet, did not know much about the man, but everyone respected him greatly ... Including Mace. Mace would come into work 430am before PT and be doing stress shoots with a bb gun and pull up bar running down the hallway. Do PT, operate 1900 percent thru the day and drive this old 1970s van home. One day, I challenged him to the O course, 5 laps (when 1 usually kicks peoples asses) ... now this is when I was running 2 miles in under 10 minutes, doing triathlons, duathlons (Ft. Lewis Triple Threat mostly) and climbing ropes like it was a video game, maxing the PT test usually 380-400 range, sometimes higher. I thought I was untouchable and there was no way this old dude could beat me ... WRONG! I swear by the 4th lap I was winded, arms fatigued ... stam was sapped but this guy ... no visible signs of being tired .... relaxed, focused and humble in victory. What I am trying to say is guys at the Unit are on a different level. Just built different. Was the most humbling experience in my life up till that point and put things into perspective. Guys on ODAs would talk about maybe being a breacher tasked to a team, but very few actually thought they could make thru that selection process. Basically, be a PT stud, if you aren't beyond no shit maxing the APFT, or ACT, along with pull ups and be able to lift .. start. Land Nav, be able to carry heavy weight, move at high temp over long distances and finding points like it is second nature. Land NAV is be familiar with a 1/25 or 1/50k scale map, navigate with a compass, pace count, use terrain, markings, be able to do it day and night and just keep doing it. Eventually it will click and you will get the cocky confidence that you can find Jimmy Hoffa buried at grid point xyz lol. You really need that super human endurance, and that confidence and no quit ethos ... really needs to be apart of your soul .. I cannot really articulate this ... but it is the "it factor" and be mentally stubborn, and be willing to push thru hell. If you have any doubt ... won't end well. You do not need to be a Ranger or SF already, many are but sometimes a line cook, army band member etc, make it thru. What the criteria is ... nobody knows. Anyone who says they do .. is lying. period. After I got my ass handed to me ... by a guy out of his prime when I was in mine ... made me wonder .. wtf was this guy like in his prime haha. That is what is needed to be in Delta. I didn't have it, and wasn't sure I could ever get there. Really be honest with yourself, your ability before trying this. You can force your way thru Ranger school, you can will over skill in SFAS .. but SFQC ... if you can't adapt it will show, standards become higher, and crank that up to 11 in CAG. Can't fake it there, can't will it .. you need to have the whole package. Basically, every day, you need to be improving, do the shit details, take the extra weight, train and practice. This will reflect on your NCOER, in your unit and your ambition will be noticed. Anything less ... well, you won't be the guy. Just my 2 cents :-) Oh and pre-scuba / Dive school is the hardest training outside CAG in the Army. If you can train to ruck, Land Nav and pass pre-scuba and have that running endurance on top of that swimming endurance .... you have a good shot. For you infantry dudes, if your hardest EIB event isn't the RNG of the fucking grenade toss downhill into a circle ... then practice. That land Nav day and night should be pre-school level .. should be easy as fuck. Weapons familiarity should be second nature. If you didn't pass, struggled in any way ... it's a benchmark. Train like it becomes some basic training check the box task, then push past that. Do that in all things ... really understand what it is you are doing, the why, the how ... know it inside and out. Adapt that mentality ... it is needed for sure .. because the operators I served with and knew ... they all had it .. you saw it in weapons demo's, they way they moved, they way they shoot ... the ability to articulate in detail whatever it was they were showing and explaining.

When I was a kid all the way up into my late teens and early 20's all I wanted to do was join the Army and become a Ranger and then go to Delta. Although Delta wasn't around when I was a kid I wanted to be the best. I signed up and couldn't pass my physical. I am now permanently disabled and my biggest regret in life is not having been accepted in the Army. It drives me nut's that my 3 brothers are all perfectly healthy and never had a desire to serve but things just work out for them while everything I try turns to crap.

With a lot of specialized units you should be looking at the following: standards you can find (PT, GT, etc) and look to exceed those. What MOS can apply for the position (ie a cook can't become a sniper without FIRST switching MOS's among several other steps). This varies per branch/job, but you don't want to be the one who gets to the fleet and realizes they can't even attempt at the application process until they lat-move. Look up the general path you will need to take along the way. Mentally prepare yourself for the long haul- I look at it as one step at a time while focusing on the goal. Get through boot camp, your school house (ie your basic MOS training), get to the fleet and stay focused, find dependable folks in your chain of command and let them know your intent, and keep pushing for those different requirements and goals. You will make good friends along the way who become complacent (drink every night in the barracks, don't study/ PT, etc) Don't be caught up with them. I ran some screening processes for my unit and while the above will help you, it is not the end all be all. I had some PT gods come through that were just obnoxious humans. They didn't make it. I had some scrawny FNGs come through who just didn't quit, kept their mouth shut so they could listen to understand and not listen to respond, and they killed it. Be malleable whether you are a 18yo or a 28yo. No one cares about your life struggles, your "why", or your history. All that matters is that you use those things to show up and put out each day. I don't care if you are doing it purely as a challenge so long as you put out. Be there for your team. Be an asset and not a liability no matter your skill level. You don't know how to do something well? Find someone who does and learn from them. Brilliance in the basics is huge too. I don't need someone on my team who can run 5min miles, but doesn't know how to effectively employ basic gear, land nav, etc. Find your weaknesses, write them down, and grind them out. Not for you, but for your team. Good luck.

My thing is 99% of people that want to get into Delta or ST6 just ain't gonna make it, and that's totally alright! It's jsut the way things are, the selection is so hard for a reason. So, my point to those that want to get into those 2 JSOC units is to take an extra second to consider the Special Operations unit you want to be in in the meantime. That way, if you never get the chance to come to selection, or, if you don't make it, well, you're in the branch you most wanted to be in, in the unit you most wanted to be in in that branch.

Marines in Force Recon get selected in Delta Force. There was a 1st Lieutenant in my battalion who in India Company as platoon commander was in Marine Recon and a scout sniper before he was a Officer ,after Iraq 2003 war OIF he left the regular infantry and retried out for Force Recon and later on was picked up by Delta Force. Special Operations learned to land NaV , read maps better, work pace counts, night land Nav, and work on compass skills. Learn to run in boots better and ruck .

If Delta selection is anything like S.A.S. selection, having a blemish or two on your record won't matter at all. They look for guys that can do the job - often people that don't fit the normal standards. When David Sterling created the world's first special forces in WW2 (S.A.S), he recruited mostly deviants and problem soldiers that didn't fit in. I can't imagine things have changed. Good luck 👍

I would say it’s because they have so many wanting to apply to these cool jobs they can just demand no blemishes on a career to help weed shit out. You ain’t gonna do any harm with that one. The SAS has a much smaller pool to recruit from and as such has to be willing to look past who you where to who you are if who you are is the right person.

I can't recall all the specifics, other than time left (2 Yrs) and time in grade at E-5, they laid out some basic requirements but surprisingly did not require being either ABN, Ranger and/or SF. It was a wide open recruitment. They were looking for STUD's who had Brains, Intestinal Fortitude and Brass Balls! They were willing to train and I know they were overwhelmed by the responses.
