Pathfinder Tours 'Trans-Pennine Deltic Lament' railtour harks back to the final days of the famous English Electric 'Deltic' locomotives, when they plied their trade on the Trans Pennine route following their withdrawal from The East Coast Main Line.
With preserved Deltic D9009 'Alycidon' (named for the winner 1949 Stayers Triple Crown, racing fans!) in charge, the tour made its way from York to Liverpool via the unusual route of the Copy Pit line, the train was sent on a circular tour of Merseyside as part of its repositioning move. I picked up the train on its way back to Liverpool at Lea Green. Direct Rail Services' 68031 leads with D9009 on the back. It's traveling at a fairly leisurely rate, due to it following an EMU stopping service immediately in front.
The return to York was via the more usual Trans Pennine route of Manchester Victoria and Huddersfield, and it is at the former that I picked the tour up next.
Firstly, a few of the more routine goings on:
Fittingly we see the modern day TransPennine Express 350406 arriving on 1M98 from Glasgow Central.
TransPennine Express 185118 on 1F70 Newcastle to Liverpool
Northern 156489 on 2L77 1646 Victoria to Southport
TransPennine Express 185106 on 1E76 Liverpool to Newcastle
Finally, we get to see English Electric Deltic D9009 'Alycidon' on 1Z31 to York blast its way through the darkness with sounds and clag aplenty. As I've said many times on here, the accompanying BR Mark 2 air conditioned stock is in exemplary condition.
Anyway, Happy New Year to you all. Best wishes for 2018.
Cheers.
Ross.
