"Fashion" is an industry that exists to BS people into buying ideas that you wear. Until the ideas change. You can't do that working and living 50 miles from NYC. I work in tech. I used to look at those sky scrapers and wonder what kind of great things all those people were accomplishing in there. No more. I now understand the extent of the feudalistic empire of people who do NOTHING of value. I'm an engineer and we are one of the only roles in the company that produce a product. These, "consultants", managers, project manager, and leadership jobs are purely performative that produce a product intended to be handed from one meaningless job to the next. I would encourage anybody to read David Grueber's essay entitled Bullshit Jobs in Strike magazine. He describes it as, "frying fish", where the company cafeteria manager needs to make more money so he hires a team to fry the fish and that continues 'til it fills the building. Don't be afraid, it's a short essay and it will illuminate the corporate tech world.
@magnericАй бұрын
Yup. Its by the efforts of the engineers and workers on the production line that all these consultants can parasitise off what your work
@Green_Tea_CoffeeАй бұрын
I'll vouch for Project Managers. (No, I'm not one.) The job of the engineers is to design and build stuff. The job of the PM is to make sure the engineers stay within budget and deliver on time. A good PM is an absolute necessity to an effective team. A bad one, on the other hand, can completely tank a project.
@AlexKS1992Ай бұрын
Consultants are glorified middle men.
@zachb8012Ай бұрын
@@Green_Tea_Coffee In my experience PMs are necessary because their job is to keep engineers focused on delivering value and not being distracted by the, "fish frying" tasks foisted on engineering by arguably even less useful middle leadership in an org. IE. leadership whose job neither includes making business or engineering decisions. For example you say, "stay within budget" but I hear, "juggle Jira tasks and schedule meetings to keep cost/estimates accurate." But the thing is... IF engineering is doing something that delivers obvious value for the business, the project is crystal clear and literally every decision of value beyond, "do the thing" comes engineering. A good PM might great at frying fish, but their job is to prevent engineers from getting caught up in frying fish, and my contention is the fish frying tasks are seldom necessary to begin with.Seriously, bro, if you work in an office do yourself a favor and read the Grueber essay. If you like the essay he wrote a whole book, but it's not required reading.

One was "Meat Shield" which was something like Middle Management is the Meat Shield between upper and lower managers. But one of the best ones was "Yellow Pixel." Yellow Pixel is something that devs purposely put into the demonstration, so that these low level managers can point it out, to get their ego-boost/etc, while ignoring the actual issues/important things that shouldn't be tampered with. Absolutely hilarious. We all know that these managers just care about finding things so that they can report in board meetings how great of a job they did by "fixing" something. Insanity.

They have, and expect the use of, other faster and more capable tools - and I expect that will only continue to become the norm more widely. One director I spoke to told me he views having Excel skills as equivalent to putting 'Typing' on your CV in the 90's - it used to be a skill that was needed and not super common, but eventually it's just expected you'd know it to even be in the field at all and so it's not worth paying much for on its own. I dont know if this woman was required to manually model in excel, I'd be surprised if that were the case at a tech firm, but it's possible - but if it wasn't specifically requested of her to deliver an excel model and that's how she was spending ten hours, I'd sure have serious questions about her capability.
