While Smash sits on the back burner for now, other platform fighters have been picking up the slack. Recently revealed was an unexpected one: A followup to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl! The original saw an overwhelming amount of attention from its announcement only to stumble upon its actual release, but now here comes a sequel with an actual budget hoping to be a much more legitimate fighting game!
But what DO we know so far about Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2? Just want to bring up two minor corrections; 1. The new temple stage isn't from Hey Arnold, it's from Rugrats. It's nearly identical in appearance to the Reptar Ruins track from Nick Kart Racers. 2. Conch Street has been confirmed to not be a stage, but just part of Patrick's Super animation. Or it WAS part of his Super, but in the time between that gameplay being recorded and it's release, the background was completely replaced.

On the topic of prop attacks: while I usually don’t like them either, I feel like Squidward’s Krakatoa and Jimmy’s laser sword both work since they’re actually, you know, weapons. Squidward’s other props are fine, since he’s not exactly much of a fighter to begin with, I just hope they removed Toph’s dumb “hold up her belt” attack. Make it a taunt if they really want that reference, but there’s no excuse for not making actual attacks for a character from a martial arts series.

My thoughts on the reference stuff is that I feel like it’s important to remember the context of a character for how much of this fits. The AC character (which I guess are sorta the baseline for this kinda thing, at least the most clear example I think) do it a lot because they don’t fight and are just doing AC things. With that reference point, aside from that one episode he learns karate and never uses it again, Squidwards not even a practicing fighter like SpongeBob or shows much of any kind of threat like Patrick often does, so him mostly Squidward stuff make more sense. And even then these moves commit a lot more to the idea than some of the first games moves where Sandy would like elbow check you while holding an acorn for no reason (Patrick actually eats the Krabby patty in his up attack now so it makes a lot more sense). I hope that makes sense. I’m no expert.😅

I agree! While the Avatar characters and other specific characters shouldn't rely on references as much, the goofy cartoon characters like the spongebob cast, Ren and Stimpy, and Garfield all make sense to be reference heavy as long as it's clever and thoughtful

Yeah, honestly if its for a wacky ass character I don't mind, I just don't like characters with dedicated fighting styles using random stuff Squidward's just as weird as the rest of the Spongebob cast, just in his own way, he can get away with stuff like that As long as Toph isn't pulling her belt out for moves or Danny isn't hitting people with the thermos (seriously, why), I'm good

This was a really good analysis! The way you go into so much detail really makes me hyped to play the game. I wish it was October already. Btw, the San Lorenzo stage is actually the Reptar Ruins stage from the Nick Racers 3 game. You can see the Reptar statues while the meteorites fall on stage Donny also uses the Electro Grenades from the 2012 series. That’s the projectile he is swinging with his staff

Some details regarding Plankton that were missed. Plankton's mech is from Sponge Out of Water, and the ketchup cannons are from the tie-in game, SpongeBob HeroPants. Also, I think Plankton’s up special is in the scene where Jimmy gimps him. Plankton’s mech ditches its lower body and rockets upwards. I think it’s the up special because Plankton seems to go into free fall afterwards. His Achilles heel seems to be, besides being large and easy to hit, his recovery may leave something to be desired. Plankton’s propeller attack might be an up aerial of sorts.

13:22 I actually don't mind this TBH, this is basically toon force the fighting game, which cartoon characters when fighting can be as strong or weak as they want because they prioritize comedy over power, so their attacks being funny references makes sense. I do however take issue when it's on grounded characters like toph doing it.

Raph's Drill Attack comes from the Tournament Fighters games on the SNES. It's like a Psycho Crusher from Street Fighter, so if it's not a Dash Attack, it's probably a Side Special, though I could be wrong. They gave Leo his Sword Spin (Endless Screw) in the last game. Though for some reason, it went upward instead of Forwards like a Hurricane Kick, Leonardo had a different Anti-Air Special in the SNES game. I'm really curious how Aang and the TMNT will work out. I'm betting Donnie and Leo will be real tricky spacing wise.

Small mistake at 2:14 Reptar is one of the veterans confirmed to return, Lincoln is the other veteran who might be cut from the game that was in the NASB1 footage (But he’s probably sticking around.)

Minor Correction: The Stage at 10:59 is not based of Hey Arnold but is actually based of Rugrats as the stage is probably Reptar Ruins. The Pillars have a striking resemblance to Reptar and if you watch and look at the Nick Kart Racers 3, will notice a track with not only the same name but also the same theme and look.

I agree, Squidward's moveset feels the most NASB1 out of the NASB2 movesets. It's not so much that they're pulling references, it's that it feels like it's done at random. Less a moveset, and more a collection of poses. I'm not the hugest fan. Jimmy, by contrast, feels incredibly well represented. This is how Jimmy would fight. Any references are smartly chosen and fit his fighting style.

Plankton also looks pretty good with few tacked on references. I’m just worried that he seems to be too good. What with his sauce keeping enemies from escaping combos. But we’ll see how it shakes out. Squidward would be a harder character to craft a move set for, understandably. It’s not a big problem to me here, but maybe they could’ve done something different for Squidward. Patrick also has that problem with his up light being an uppercut with a Krabby Patty, up strong being him shaking a coat rack, and down light being his laser pants. I think some of the move sets also have a fair bit of meme references which could be tacky for some people.

@BigBossMan538 I agree, Plankton also looks pretty natural. Y'know, I think the difference is that Plankton actually seems like he's fighting. Squidward (and Partick too, yeah) feel more like they're just randomly posing, or doing things completely unrelated to the fight that just happen to have hit boxes attached. I do see what you're saying that for a character like Squidward, he's very much not a fighter in his original series, so it's hard to really represent him in a fighting game, but idk. I still think they could have done something different with him.

This feels like a video PapaGenos would make, great analysis on all the gameplay, mechanics and the newcomers, I’m excited for all of what this game may have to offer over the first one, I couldn’t really get into the first one because it felt too fast and janky at times, the first one was essentially a beta if you think about it. As for characters I’d want, I feel like I’m the only one that wants Dora while everyone and their mom wants Timmy Turner lol.

I think the problem of “Overrelying on references” might just be an issue with designing a moveset for a cartoon character compared to a video game character.

Yeah, that can be more troublesome in this compared to a video game crossover. Some Smash fan movesets do over-rely on making characters pull out props for stuff when seeing the character just do a cool punch or kick can be just fine.

I suspect that the charge rate of slime will vary by the fighter. Those with light combo games may find their's charging quicker, while zoners and those who already have great combo games have slower charge rates to avoid letting them get too saucy to handle. This would make that broken combo we saw from Plankton a rare and earned event instead of a Luigi style zero to death combo that you see over and over.

I had no interest in the first game, it looked cheap and barebone and with everyone claiming it to be "The Smash Killer" it just honestly turned me off from the game. Not to mention the base game roster didn't really have anyone I was too interested in playing. (DLC did add someone I was interested in playing but by then the game felt dead imo) This game tho honestly looks really interesting and I'm actually thinking about picking it up. It looks a lot more mechanically interesting as opposed to nasb1 and actually has content outside of the multiplayer. So yee hoping this game is good.

Im glad the gameplay got a overhaul. The first game felt like a lost cause with mechanics that looked like good ideas on paper, either turned pointless, over centralizing or boring. Now with the speed slowed, the movesets and animations improved and the new mechanics its kinda looking similar to the platform fighter of my dreams. Hopefully the Slime Metter inspires creativity and variety.(something the first game desperately needed) Im still on the fence if im going to buy this, but Plankton Side B slime canceled in Plankton Buster has me tempted.

Well, can't say I was expecting a sequel to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, but I'm not complaining, I'm all for it! :D I just hope that the developers learned from their mistakes of the game's predecessor, and improve on what worked, and didn't work from last time (though from what we've seen so far that seems to be the case), and that they'll try to balance the game out better this time. Also hope that they don't rely too much on references, especially random ones like several of Squidward's attacks, and only use ones that would be more practical (and I also hope that the Nick characters that had video games of their own, particularly SpongeBob, get some attacks from there too as there's definitely some good stuff from over there that they could use in battle. They don't have to entirely rely on their source shows alone). Glad to see we got an actual story mode this time around! Hopefully it'll have more effort than the lackluster Arcade Mode from the previous game. Not a fan that Jimmy Neutron seems to be likely pulling a Mega Man, and Steve where their Neutral A's, Forward Tilts, and Neutral Airs are identical, and annoying to use in battle. Overall, despite some concerns, I'm still excited for NASB2, and I look forward to seeing what the devs have in store for us in the upcoming months!

With all the new and important mechanics that are dependant on it (EX moves, cancels, dodges, etc.) I don't think so. If any, maybe the "Final Smashes" are the ones that may be optional, but if they just do all of them as a move that triggers an animated sequence and deals damage to nearby opponents I think they will be OK.

Nickelodeon all stars bro did a good job with adding a new mechanic because none of these games just feels the same no new mechanics and stuff but Nickelodeon All Star brawl two did something that no fighting game because I had ever done and they have more creative stages. The multi versus stages just feels the same and I am at least we have more characters when multi-verses comes out in 2024. They better have a new mechanic or something.

Forward feels very "Squidward" all things considered, the knee-slap is super in-character and clearly not just a rip from that specific frame anyway, and I sound really repetitive when I say that the swatting is also very "Squidward" and only somewhat resembles the frame you show... And the Krusty Krab Pizza is such a legendary move from one of Squidward's best moments, what do we want him to just attack forwards really hard or something? His forward and up strongs are great 14:51 It- say it with me- feels very Squidward for one of his moves, especially one where he's trying to recover from disadvantage, to backfire on him in a way. And I mean, plenty of characters in platform fighters can hit themselves with friendly fire to extend their recovery, this is just a streamlined version of that 17:12 Wh- Why though? 17:39 Is it really that unusual? I understand what you mean, but at the end I think Nick's approach is way better: [Long text alert] In both cases they are basically remaking the games, so they aren't just enhanced versions of the same game with additional content, but technically new games made almost from zero. Even if the new ones will be probably better overall, certainly there would be people who would want to play the original versions from time to time, for the memories, maybe they liked some stuff from those more, maybe the roster and content will not be the same, etc. Just like there are still people playing Smash 64 even if Smash Ultimate is considered better overall. In MultiVersus' case, they will force you to play the new one overwriting the original one and practically banishing it from Earth. In Nick's case you can choose any of the versions or even both. And because Nick's are more like whole games that are also released physically, both can be preserved (and depending in your country, also legally backed-up digitally) Because MultiVersus is a ever-changing live-service game that isn't running (just rendering) in your PC/console but in an external server is almost impossible to preserve, and if not being able to play the original one anymore after the new one releases isn't as bad, sooner or later the game will close their servers and they will retire the game from availability again (and forever, eventually) So personally, for big changes I prefer new releases instead of season updates.
