Fueled by war, immigration and aggression Demna found himself an outlet for his emotions and creativity, designing fashion. After all recent happenings, you find here a short summary of his life, while trying to understand his way of creating and thinking. He is probably one of the most polarizing and political designers out there, speaking out his opinion openly. Lets try to understand what he has in his mind.
What do you think about him and his creations? Hype or genius?

Demna is definitely a post-modern provocateur who knows well how to re-articulate not only Balenciaga's house codes but also all that is common-place, lacking in "taste", bureaucratic (austerity/manipulation), conventionally beautiful, vulgar or sinister, functional and functionless to tell us, as either a sort of historiographer or herald, of dystopian and utopian periods. As you said there is something very personal to his method of storytelling via his designs/shows but at the same time general or communal---maybe it's a harmonious angst. * I def agree the marketing error was horrendous! Thanks for sharing your reflections on Demna as an artist and his works.

You beautifully described the contrast and contradictions Demna is working with. I think he is still one of the few designers not listening to what the crowd needs, such as other brands jumping on the trends having evolved within the society, but dictates himself what a new way is. While doing that he build up himself a new community that follows him religiously. It’s funny how at the end he turns into something he probably didn’t want to be. Kering will be happy though ✨

You mentioned on Demna collective design language and his communalism background did spark my understanding of his overall aesthetic!

We can probably agree on (a) appreciation of Demnas work (anywhere) and (b) the main audience and the public perception for his work at Balenciaga being something entirely different. A good example for this is the Clones collection spring 22. If you read his text on the collection and watch the show, it could almost be mocking the actual audience that would usually end up buying these products. In the context of an artist as a communicator, would you say that he has failed at communicating to some degree? Or is deliberately riding a balance where his work can be interpreted either way, thereby pleasing multiple audiences?

Small note, Walter is no longer the head of the academy he used to run. he left about a year ago. Greets from Anwerp, Belgium 🙃

I think Demna should take a break for like 2 years because all his boxy oversize cuts that he is doing since 2018 has started to get really repetitive in my opinion. The last collection was so boring. I hope he finds some good inspiration and gets fresh air so he can revolutionize fashion again. He needs to go in new directions cut wise
@tubaavalon
@tubaavalon Жыл бұрын
Not sure about the boxy cuts, I personally am not yet sick of his designs but after all that happened and his comments on his own shows lately I would also suggest a little pause. But maybe the focus on Couture is already that. Thinking more longterm and not it piece focused anymore.

I think he is a very sensitive, traumatized and hurting individual and it shows in his work . Yeah, he should take some time off.

It doesn’t matter if he’s involved directly or not. He is the head and took zero responsibility. Resign already. Look at how in Japan or Korea when politicians and head resign when something bad happens

Both couture collection were my favorite. I have a bad feeling with the recent insane price rise and the issue with some of fan-favorite runaway items being canceled in production. What kind of business strategy is this? Balenciaga is like shooting their own foot with bad decision after another. And how long Demna will stay being CD?

His relationship with the house and the philosophy of Cristobal Balenciaga is very interesting, I like what he’s doing now, focusing on the art of making clothes I believe in redemption too, and trying to erase everything he’s done bc of a mistake, to me, it would be a loss for the 21st century-fashion

Absolutely. The mistake was a mistake. We will not be able to erase. But as all mistakes, they can be forgiven.

Been following the channel from the get go. Love most of your content and I'm always excited when you post. Demnas influence is undisputed and I hate the majority of the unforgiving, hypocritical, pseudo moralic conversations (if you can even call it that), about misteps of others nowadays. But that campaign was absolutely fked up. And in my opinion, you don't need a strong moral compass to come to that conclusion. Just brushing it away as a mistake by a genius who we should support, and the worst: who prob does not have children in his life, as an excuse, is really uncharacteristic for the introspected and reflected Tuba I got to know through your vids. At the end of the vid, you sounded more like a Balenciaga fangirl that just doesn't wanna hear it. Not saying there is no way back for him or anything near that (he never left anyways). Just my 2 Cents on it. Grüße aus Frankfurt

Thanks Simon! I know what you mean by I am trying to find an excuse, maybe it was also my tone of voice, not being serious while talking about it, while I am very much concerned about everything happening in the world about this specific topic from sex trafficking to child abuse. I wanted to put still the campaign in context of his prior behavior and thoughts, to create an understanding for the nonsense this campaign would be for him personally. That’s what k meant by, he maybe is not as sensitive towards these topics, when growing up more rough and unsafe. But I share your opinion on this campaign being fucked up!!

There is not an apologize for that if we call it what it is, because taking that position(half ignoring, half don't care , half trying to make it look not so dangerous....is very DANGEROUS!!

It’s difficult to tame a tiger, but his recent circumvention of overt logos and branding with emphasis on design/garment construction seems almost a tranquillizing homage to the House name. I’ve certainly moved on from the brouhaha of the past several months, as there’s no denying the power of his genius.

I think he if was directly involved in the campaign then he needs to be held accountable but if it had nothing to do with him then maybe he should clean house with those individuals who are tarnishing the brands name. I enjoy his design aesthetic but he should think about the long term impact of being associated with a tarnished brand. He speaks out on social issue so maybe he should speak out against this.

Many leaders and head of companies have to take responsibilities and resign, doesn’t matter if they are directly involved or not. This happened during his watch. He’s not taking responsibility from day one.

I didn't watch the video and I do respect your views. In fact I generally adore your videos but I will say this, if the brand had done something to attract the wrath of the T community, he would have been done. Finished. And not one person would have dared to make content trying to humanise him or rationalise whatever is going on in his head. That's all I'll say.

I am not ok with the campaign, just showing an example of what could have led of him approving this, as I don’t believe he saw it the way it was at the end.

@tubaavalon
@tubaavalon Жыл бұрын
It was definitely nasty, if it was on purpose. I am still not convinced of this being the idea of Demna here, because it makes absolutely no sense with his 20 years of designing until now. But whosever idea that one campaign was, it was non negotiable to never should have gotten released.
