On his 90th birthday, the legendary consumer advocate, corporate critic and four-time presidential candidate Ralph Nader joins Democracy Now! for an in-depth conversation about U.S. democracy and why "Congress is a weapon of mass destruction." He says lawmakers have shredded the country's social safety net, refused to rein in the U.S. war machine, allowed white-collar crime to go unpunished, failed to enforce tax fairness and more. "All of these are very unpopular with the American people," Nader says. He also discusses the 2024 presidential race and encourages people to "vote their conscience" and "find some way out of this two-party duopoly gulag.” Nader, who publishes the monthly print-only newspaper the Capitol Hill Citizen, was recently profiled in The Washington Post for his ongoing advocacy.
Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on over 1,500 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Watch our livestream at democracynow.org Mondays to Fridays 8-9 a.m. ET.

The election of a 3rd Party Candidate isn't going to happen without at least Ranked Choice Voting. I had a chance to meet Nader but declined. Why? Because when media tried to do what they had done successfully in the 1992 Election (split the vote, get the guy who signed whatever the Republican majority put on his desk), Nader blew it. "There is no difference between the political Left and Right in the country." Said Ralph, repeatedly and during the debates in the 2000 campaign. Do we have a moral compass and people-first agenda in the Supreme Court and other Courts in our 3rd Branch of Government? We do not. Ask Sheldon Whitehouse. Do we have a head start fighting climate change? Ask the planet and those who pay attention to it. Ralph wasn't going to win without at least Ranked Choice, so what did he do instead? He told Republican Voters to vote for Guns (even though an Amendment protects that). He told Republican Voters to vote for the $300 Check Bush promised from the Clinton/Gore surplus. He told Americans "look away" when the US Supreme Court took the decision away from Voters and decided it themselves, along Party lines. I'm grateful to Ralph for a great many things: Seat Belts, Airlines having to compensate for bumping passengers but Ralph set us back decades in the 2000 election. "Thanks" Ralph.

Corporate America and the two party system would not let him. Look how both parties treat anyone running other than Biden and Trump. The attacks on Independent candidates is viscous. I keep saying that if the majority of people vote for whoever is on the ballot other than Biden/Trump it will prevent either of the two to get to 270 electoral votes and then people should demand an input.

He seems to be saying Democracy in US is rotten because I don't like the people my fellow citizens have voted into office. He has always had the right to stand for election himself; its just that when he did, the people didn't vote him in. My suspicion is that he doesn't believe in elective democracy at all. Like so many Left wingers in history, he will use the word 'Democracy', but only as a propaganda weapon to disguise his real intention; Socialism. We don't need to look far for another example of that; this channel.

My father was forced into one of those private medicare plans when New Jersey outsourced their medicare handling for state retirees. He went from having everything covered to all of a sudden having to fight and jump through hoops to get them to cover his dialysis treatments. At one point I was on the phone with them for hours and I actually had to make the case that dialysis treatments are medically necessary by explaining in graphic detail what happens to a person with zero kidney function who can no longer urinate if they don't receive treatment every other day. Its like the world went from looking at retirees as people to reducing them to a statistic that's to be thrown out to sea if its too expensive to care for them.

I love Ralph Nader! Happy Birthday! People don't understand what a movement that was back in the 2000 election when he was running. I traveled with a tiny caravan of people around the Midwest that were working for him out of a Chicago Branch - in Pilsin to be precise. I remember when I was there in St. Louis during the Presidential debates where Nader was removed from the debate between Bush and Gore. Some camera man at the time who without a person to hold his boom mike, asked me to hold it for him as we followed Ralph and his people out of the debate along with the rest of the press. I was practically right next to him the whole time as they where getting him into the back seat of a car and he was arguing with security about he rights to be in the debate. I would venture to say say that helping out on that campaign was one of the best times of my life. I have so many stories to tell about my time helping with that campaign, and Ralph and his female VP I forget her name, were the most amazing speakers. I could go on and on. That was such an incredible movement at the time, that was completely squelched by the main stream media. Too bad he never became president, the man was true true true genius. A serious American-hero.

Israel’s war has an end in sight with clear benefits for both sides: an actual functioning government for the first time, an govt that focuses on growing its GDP. Do people not realize how huge this is? In contrast, early 1900’s resistance is perpetual and has no end in sight.

All I see when I look at him is hubris - the same kind of hubris that damaged the legacy of RGB. His doomed bid for the presidency gave us Bush, Cheney and the parade of horrors they created. I daresay we can thank him for events and trends that gave us Trump. So, no, not a fan.

Ralph Nader is, again, a man of integrity that i would surely vote for if he were to run for office. He sticks his finger in the face of the entire US government and asks the questions that people need to ask. The current political system needs to be dismantled, and until it is, nothing will change. The US has failed and will never be as strong as it once was. An embarrassment, and looked at as weak. I don't care how strong they think their military is, they are weak and will never accomplish what is needed to run a successful country. Guns and flags don't make you strong. That's been proven many times. The child of the world has a lot to learn. Good luck.

Almost all of our engineers in the USA are foreign born. In the 1940s through 60s American engineers were recruited to other countries like Iran. Americans no longer have the math skills needed to become engineers.

Someone once poited out to me how fast presidents age during their term(s). It is true. Take a photo of when they took office and out it to one four years later. Then other people of the same age. Presidency speeds up the aging process.

The consummate Public Citizen Ralph Nader, is one of only three people of public life who I ever wanted to meet in person...and it happened. For decades he has lain out a clear path for true citizen activism which would lead to a truly democratic America political process. He is at the top of my Mt. Rushmore as the most committed and effective Citizen/Activists in my lifetime...and he has aged like fine wine...
