US empire, continuing the British Empire tradition. The weapons industry in "fiscal 2017 figures, netting American firms $192.3 billion" and the countries we intervene in have oil which our oil industry wants to control. We prefer to have a leader in each country who will give American oil companies control of the oil, if they do that and buy our weapons the leader can stay. Saudi Arabia does this but they also support "terrorists" kill and chop up journalist etc no problem, they do what we want: buy weapons, sell oil only in American $. If a country wants to control their own oil or make the US companies pay more to do business there, or use their own currency to trade oil, then we take them out. We put Sadaam Hussein in place, but he later turned against us so we took him out. We were still supporting him when he used chemical weapons against the Iranians in the Iran-Iraq war, we even sold the chemical and other weapons to him and we sold weapons to Iran to use against him, it was good for US business. In 2000 Sadaam supposedly decided to no longer use the US dollar for oil trade so in 2001 we said he had WMDs, and was an evil dictator and took him down. It's the same story over and over, but we don't seem to remember and we are never told the whole story. I am 50 and have seen and heard the same things over and over, but the majority of the American people believe what they are told by the MSM, who is also owned by corporations that want profits over truth and receive money from the weapons industry etc so they don't report what those in power don't want reported. We are a capitalist country, the $$ speaks, nothing else really matters in our actions. We speak all the things about democracy and freedom in the world, but it's not as important as $$. Every country we "help' has oil. We are free to say whatever we want, but I don't know how we can change the underlying system. Democrat or Republican congress both receive money from the oil, weapons and other lobbyists and money gets things done. The new people running have ideas to change it, they see and speak about it, but it would take a massive upheaval to change it from being run by those that benefit from war and oil. And the people will believe whatever they are told, because we want to believe our intentions are always "good" we were taught to believe they were. They are likely always " good for business". All large countries tell the people what the leaders want them to know in the news, it keeps a country together, believing the same storyline. Our country just has a devastating effect on the entire globe. Look at a map to see where all of our military bases are, then look at it as if you were one of the surrounded countries. It would be frightening. Our Constitution has the ability for us to change the way our country is run, but it says only congress can declare war, it has to be voted on but we haven't even followed the Constitution regarding war since WW2 and we have ALWAYS been at war with someone since then. Congress members get money from those that want war and are also afraid that if they vote yes or no for war they won't get re-elected and that's all they really care about, so they just let presidents do whatever they wanted regarding all the wars then complained after if the people disagreed. Most people are unaware that we have not followed the Constitution, many really don't care as long as they have a good life. The new congress is speaking up more now saying that any war must be declared lately with the ongoing threats to Iran, but the president is now saying Iran's army is a "terrorist" group and after 9/11 congress stupidly passed a law that no war has to be declared to fight terrorists. I don't think they intended that to include the military of a whole country, but now there is a loophole so presidents can now just use that. We the people have the power to change it under the Constitution, but we the people are largely sheep that follow whatever we are told and forgot anything we learned in school about democracy. As long as we are comfortable and we feel "safe" we don't pay attention. All the wars have been far away, it's only our soldiers and their families who pay. The soldiers also believe what we are told, until sadly many realize much was a lie. The soldiers do keep us safe, they are absolutely necessary, we have a lot of enemies because of our actions and the soldiers really are giving their lives to protect us, but they may not realize they are also protecting and strengthening the broken system. We are not even in the top 10 democracies in the world. Australia and Canada are above us, but they have less population. They more people, the more propaganda needed to hold them together unfortunately.

When I was in the U.S. Navy, my ship participated in the bombardment of Santo Domingo. It was a mysitfying experience for the crew, because we had no idea of what we were doing! We were told that we were doing naval "exercises", but the crew could tell that this was no exercise because the ammunition that we were firing was "live", not dummy ammunition. With the ship completely blocked with most of the crew at battle stations inside, we just carried out war exercise functions. Communications with the exterior were jammed, so we had no way of knowing what was happening, in which we were participating. It was only on return to our home port (Newport, R.I.) that we found out that we had been bomging a capital city and reversing the liberal reforms of a new Dominican president, who freed the Hatitian black slaves on American plantations there. The crew being at least a third black Americans, we felt "used and abused" in a filthy cause that affected other poor blacks on the island. It was disgusting.

That, and numerous moves that progressively thrown my books into disorder, and I just have not done enough reading and research on what happened. By a strange coïncidence, I encountered a guy who was at the university in San Domingo who was there when my ship was bombarding his university. That was quite an experience, given his own reaction. All LIES to dupe us so the warmongering profiteers can keep trying to profit and can throw a tantrum to attempt to keep TOTAL CONTROL. When General Ayub Khan seized total power in Pakistan by a coup against the democratically elected president Iskandar Mirza, he was invited to the US in 1961, received by John F Kennedy, slowly driven on a drop top Rolls Royce in a ticker-tape parade arranged for him in New York City with thousands of Americans standing by, witnessing Ayub being showered by confetti. Ayub's aligning of Pakistan with the US (against USSR) was very favorable by America, for which he was praised (despite being a dictator). Similar is the praise received today by dictators in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Bahrain.

"The overall conclusion reached is that the United States most likely has been responsible since WWII for the deaths of between 20 and 30 million people in wars and conflicts scattered over the world. To the families and friends of these victims it makes little difference whether the causes were U.S. military action, proxy military forces, the provision of U.S. military supplies or advisors, or other ways, such as economic pressures applied by our nation. They had to make decisions about other things such as finding lost loved ones, whether to become refugees, and how to survive. And the pain and anger is spread even further. Some authorities estimate that there are as many as 10 wounded for each person who dies in wars. Their visible, continued suffering is a continuing reminder to their fellow countrymen. It is essential that Americans learn more about this topic so that they can begin to understand the pain that others feel. Someone once observed that the Germans during WWII "chose not to know." We cannot allow history to say this about our country. The question posed above was "How many September 11ths has the United States caused in other nations since WWII?" The answer is: possibly 10,000. " source: James A. Lucas CounterCurrents.org

Yes, the US has visited several hundred 9/11's on Iraq alone in an utterly fraudulent war. I recall Dick Chaney speaking in the 90's about invading Iraq and describing, with perfect accuracy, exactly what eventually happened. Under W., he reversed course and said, ridiculously, that the war would be over in 6 weeks.

@@pagodebregaeforro2803 There is what I have come to describe as a Cult of the Veteran in the United States. It is this widely-perpetuated belief that the soldier is -- by default -- a hero and that serving and even dying for ones country is the paramount of patriotism. Many veterans also return to civilian life with this sense of entitlement that because they turned bolts during the war or played pool in Germany for their careers that they somehow did that for our freedoms, therefore, US military policy is taboo to criticize. This is bizarre in light of the fact that historically veterans are often neglected in our society. Their mental health is a liability to them should they seek treatment, and they often have to form veterans' orgs just to continue to mobilize for pensions, and benefits and simple recognition once the news cycle shifts away from their sacrifices or another bigger war comes along that obscures their public advocacy. But there is a whole slew of motivations to join, including poverty, family tradition, the desire to see excitement, et al.

Needless to say I wasn't too thrilled about what they taught me in the public schools because I knew most of it was absolute bullshit. There is a crucial difference. The South African Nationalists needed the black population. The current administration is also keen on resolving issues on the South China Sea with the claimants. Thank you for this very important piece, but I am extremely disappointed that America's long history of meddling in Indigenous governments, starting with the Founding Fathers, was totally left out. Lewis and Clark tried to replace leaders with their chosen "token Indians" all along their journey to claim the Pacific coast, and trade with China, for America. Many treaties got signed by bribing sellouts who were not elected by Native communities. Most modern tribal governments are also puppets for mining, logging, ranching, and other corporate and outside interests. The traditional Navajo clan government, which included women elders' voices, was supplanted in the early 20th century by the Dept. of the Interior, Peabody Coal, and the state of Arizona to facilitate mineral extraction. "Broken Rainbow" is a documentary about that. I really hope DN will correct this tremendous oversight someday soon.
