Ahead of the 96th Academy Awards, we’re joined by James Wilson, producer of the Oscar-nominated film The Zone of Interest, who raised Israel’s assault on Gaza in his BAFTA Award acceptance speech last month. The film follows the fictionalized family of real-life Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss as they live idyllically next to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Wilson says the film serves as a metaphor for the occlusion of “systemic violence, injustice, oppression, from our lives,” and challenges audiences’ complicity by asking them to identify with Höss and his wife Hedwig. “The idea of this film was to look for the similarities, rather than the differences, between us and the perpetrator,” says Wilson.

Ahmad Yassine, founder of Hamas, was born near Ashkelon, also pushed with his family to Gaza by Israel. To refuse to see that 70% of Gazans came from the places where Israelis now live is to be blind. We cannot understand October 7th without knowing History. ~ Shlomo Sand (Jewish historian)

Unfortunately the masses who do not learn history only know about Oct 7th, just like they only know about Russia going into parts of the Ukraine. They know nothing what came before and quickly want revenge. Is this the reason we do not teach real history so that people can be manipulated?

In the bible and Torah, no Jews lived in Ashkelon . The Jews ruled over the Philistines and taxed them. But they never lived there. Israel has no right to Ashkelon, according to their own holy texts. No right to Gaza, or Gath or Jaffa, Jews only had a right to Hebron. The kingdom of Judea, was mixed. The Jews never rid the cananites from the kingdom and they lived as one. Jews have no right to cleanse the natives from Canaan. The Torah doesn't give them that right. The most religious and knowledgeable Jews are all pro-palestine.

I saw a preview of this film and was blown away. It caused me to look up and read as much as I could about the Hoss family and their father. I immediately thought how relevant this film is to what is happening today. I plan on seeing it. I see people all the time that simply want to talk about food and music and never discuss the horrific things that are taking place in our world. Thank You for making such a profound and important film that everyone should see. It brings me to tears.

The film paints a picture of how life corrupts us and makes us uninterested in anything other than our own circumstances. It clearly shows part of human nature that "can't" see suffering of others if seeing it may affect our own life in any ways. So true and sad at the same time.

The movie is quite powerful. It really reflects the duality of man, how they can create some weird paradise next to hell. You can hear gunshots and smoke aside their house as they ignore the horrors of the Jewish genocide. After a long day of exterminating Jews, the commandant Rudolph goes back to his home and reads bedtime stories to his kids. It’s an absolute horror of movie and shows the potential paradox of man.

The producer doesn't want to just point a finger at Israel. He mentions the Yemen situation which gets little attention in the U.S. and in Canada. He mentions the Russian attack on the Ukraine. There are lots of war mongers in the world. Lots of people committing crimes against humanity. What about the situation in Nigeria? The people committing these crimes against humanity may on the service seem like honorable people, but they are not.

The treatment he received was a little terse but I hope that anyone who watches this was even more moved by his nervous delivery and is more willing and equipped to examine their own thoughts, beliefs and prejudices both in the evils of the 1940s but even more importantly, right now. Also I believe the intended audience would also be people whose families were directly affected by the Holocaust and to draw the obvious parallel between what happened back then to what is happening now. It shouldn’t need this level of extrapolation but we live in a society that conditions people to think “me first” and stuff everyone else.

I wouldn't dare say the Jewish Holocaust doesn't pale in comparison. But the extreme level of hypocrisy, using the horrors of the past to justify these heinous acts by Israel is the point. To point out that we can't keep reflecting on the past and ignore the mass vile killing of innocent people and keep talking about Oct 7th Oct 7th Oct 7th. They can not hide behind that anymore. It's shameful that it had to come to this for many of I to acknowledge what's been going on for over 7 decades. But it's just like the movie. The Zionists and their control over our media, entertainment, global financial, our legal system, the military industry, it's been the Wall and it's being torn down. Too many had to and still have to suffer while the world wipes the sleep out of their eyes, but it's coming down. Israel and the Zionist Cult will finally face a new reality.

This episode has directly lead into, not solely of course but the ongoing and present occupation and now genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza so to call it as some far off irrelevant or insignificant hsitorical event that basically should be shut up does absolutely NOTHING for the Palestinians cause or indeed any humanity or acts of genocide or occuptation that are currently being carried out.Seriously to think that the murder of 6 million Jews in such a systematic industriallised scale is somehow some distant hsitorical moment !! then you really lack humanity.

It’s kinda sad/pathetic how everyone a part of the movie has given the most mealy mouthed responses when simply asked about Gaza. Or have just danced around it completely. And that’s a form of complicity, which I doubt they are aware of. But it’s obvious they care more about awards and I question how much they really took anything away from their movie. And this producer does some both sides-ing for people partying while there is an occupation going on the other side of said wall. His descriptors for Gaza (extraordinary, staggering) versus his descriptors for october 7th (heinous, massacre) are interesting, that’s for sure. You cage people after you take their land, control their every move, and use all your western backed power to prevent said people from ever possessing any kind of self-determination… yeah there will likely be uprisings. All I can say is the occupation must end.

The killings of the innocent people in Gaza is NOT a response to October the 7th. Is a continuation of the killing of innocent people that the state of Israel has been carrying since 1948. And even if we think about it as a response, which is a way of justifying from my point of view, is a perfectly condemning and atrocious one. And that should also had been said. Words matter. If that is a response, we can think that October the 7th was also a response from the Palestinians to the atrocities the state of Israel has been submitting them to. And that's ALSO incorrect. Inocent people should never pay the price, they are not collateral damage, they are not "a response". They are victims, whichever side they are in, of thirsty hateful people looking for revenge with total disregard for the value and rights of other people. Again: words matter. That being said... Congrats on the film, on the just defense of all of the victims of the horrors humans can do to one another.

Feedback for Democracy Now. Please time your interviews better so you don't abruptly cut your guests off to end the show. If you only have 10 seconds left, don't show a video clip or ask a long question for the guest to respond. It's something only your show does. At least give your guests a moment to finish speaking, and for the host to wrap up the show in a smooth manner. I've been listening and watching for years and it's very irritating for the audience and just seems unprofessional. I hope this feedback reaches someone on your team. Thanks!

He talks around it a whole bunch because he doesn´t want to offend jewish people, but the truth is, before oct 7, there where people living a live of luxury and acces just outside of Gaza, while many people in Gaza where suffering, starving etc. The fact that there was even a music festival, right next to the border wall is even more insulting. The truth is, the Israeli people of today have way more in common with the nazi commandant then they have with the jewish victims of the holocast. Thought this man would never say this out loud.

Why is this causing a stir. It's an old story and I saw a great movie a few years ago called "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" which was very evocative. How about a movie about Palestine and the ethnic cleansing that is occurring and has been going on for 75 years.

Unfortunately the people who have the biggest & thickest walls at the end of the garden minds , are probably not going to watch this film.... the masses who watch this film will be yet again visually hounded about the actions of atrocities of the past! Not realizing the real & complicated reasons that made these atrocities possible.....& confusing antisemitism as being the main issue of current events ( instead of a side effect of ) & maybe the money for such a film was better spent on a true life , present day reality documentary! I really support art & artists but this sounds??

where those people and their empathy were when Ukraine Nazi were bombing eastern Ukraine for 8 years or when they burned 50 people alive in Odessa to stamp any anti-Nazi resistance... Ukrainians were not even hiding it. Their president at the time Poroshenko openly said that "their kids will be sitting in basements, hiding, when ours will be going to school". Empathy is ALWAYS selective. This guy just upset this time is not selected in direction of his cause.

Members of my family were murdered by the Nazis. My great great grandparents probably at Auschwitz. Every time I see the advertisement for this fllm I feel sick, physically sick. I grew up on the camp liberation films, searching each face to see if they looked like my family members. For most it's a momentary interest, an evenings entertainment...For me, I am still trying to find out what happened to my family, and where they might be buried. And in the atmosphere of the world today, I see exactly what I was told Germany looked like as Hitler came to power. Any excuse to blame and hate Jewish people. Never Again!

It seems that James Wilson was on the right track, but is a bit more cautious here... The situation now and back then are not the same! Gaza was not an extermination camp like Auschwitz, more like a Warsaw Ghetto. But you can definitely draw parallels... Ongoing atrocities not only damage the psyche and humanity of the victims, but also the psyche and humanity of the perpetrators! Who flee into denial and escapism trying to overcompensate and to go on with their nice lives. The music festival goers in Israel were not Nazi commandants, they became victims themselves! But I wonder, who much thought they and other Israelis spent, thinking about the many humiliations and hardships, the people an earshot away, walled in into a Ghetto and oppressed for decades, must be feeling on a daily basis!?!
