This was something that took me forever to realize was in Demons Souls. I remember wondering why every now and then my character would do a gesture if I suddenly stoop up or moved around with the controller. As vestigial as a lot of motion control features are, I appreciate how the temporary craze around them also allowed the technology to find its faults and improve, rather than its experimental nature being shut down from the start and never explored.

I always enjoyed the SIXAXIS controls for the Souls games, as I'm kind of a maniac with keyboard shortcuts with everything I do. As for the rotating motions, I've always had great success doing them by rotating the controller very quickly in a similar motion to turning a steering wheel in a car; only horizontally. Got very good at it, and it was very rare that I did a different one on accident. Wish we had it on the PC ports, but From would have to support the Dualshock natively on PC. Which they have for Sekiro, but Sekiro also doesn't natively use the SIXAXIS features at all on any platform. Guess we'll have to see what From decides to do when Elden Ring comes out.
@arabidllama4 жыл бұрын
I think this is the intended motion - "thrust forward left" may be intended to mean "thrust *the left controller handle* foward", which is a weird way to describe a "steering-wheel right turn" motion.

For the forward left/forward right motions hold on to the controller, perpendicular to the wall in front of you, with only the hand corresponding to the motion you're trying to do and flick your wrist back so the side of the controller opposite of your hand makes a 90 degree arc from right to front/left to front. Yes, it is stupidly finicky to do the motion with your left hand because the button you're supposed to hold is on the opposite side of the controller. My best guess is that the motions didn't always require you to hold a button, but that was changed at some point because no one wants to accidentally be performing gestures while trying to play the game, while the motions remained the same.

It's been a while so I can't recall if I elaborated on it in this vid, but I've always wondered why it seemed like a bigger issue in Bloodborne. I feel like it happened to me more in Bloodborne than anywhere else, but it still probably only happened a couple times so I don't have a lot to go off of. But still, anecdotally speaking it just got a lot more complaints. So I wonder if their first transition from PS3 to PS4 (DS2 didn't have this) converted the motion inputs in such a way that they could be more subtle by accident? They were moving to a new controller afterall. Maybe the initial time requirement for holding the button was shortened too? I'd love to know more but that level of detail isn't something I'd know how to find. :)

It’s a shame they messed this feature up in later titles. Removing it in dks2 and making it so easy to accidentally input gestures in bb and dks3. I learned to do it in DeS to avoid the delay of opening the menu, and have used it ever since. But with people getting killed in Bloodborne because they shift their controller around a little bit while trying to open a door, it’s understandable that the feature is so resented nowadays. I hope it returns in Elden Ring, but with the DeS/DkS style implementation.
@Metadaxe4 жыл бұрын
Also I will add, the rotate gestures (shrug, pelvic thrust) are 1000x easier to do on ds3 than ds4. I had to spent a lot of time practicing to get them back down when switching to Bloodborne (and later DkS3), and still can’t do them 100%, while on ds3 it was fairly trivial. Ime you have to be very careful to rotate it without moving it up, down, left, right, or pitching it. And doing that while moving the controller vigorously enough to get it to do anything at all is a struggle. I always used tilt up/tilt down for point/beckon. Works fine on all titles, so idk if it was really explained wrong, even if it’s not technically what the game’s code is looking at. It’s how I learned to do it, despite having the NA version of des. It’s cool seeing a look under the hood at what’s going on here, in any case. I’m surprised that there’s nothing to detect pitch (or is that part of rotational data?) since rotating upward/downward is such a consistent method for getting point and beckon ime.

It was really interesting to see the input graphs for the motion control inputs - it looks like the programmers were making the best of finicky input devices. Still, After a few minutes of digging, it looks like Sony was using something pretty state of the art for the era - the accelerometer used in the sixaxis controller was developed in March of 2006, and the PS3 was released just 8 months later. Apparently the first developers to use it only got the controller 10 days before E3 (probably due to the relatively new tech).
@illusorywall4 жыл бұрын
Oh yes that was my understanding as well, based on some old forum discussions I found. Not sure how accurate it is, but someone was expressing the opinion that while it didn't match the quality of high-end accelerometers in expensive machinery from the time, that it was impressively good considering how much cheaper it was. Like there wasn't anything quite like it before that. edit: Reminds me of the Kinect. A failure as a gaming device/ console interface, but an impressive device for those who found a novel/ niche use for it.
@ethanryan61614 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and it was apparently pretty energy efficient - the ps3 controller's charge life still amazes me. Speaking of the Kinect, did you know that a Japanese company used Kinect tech as inputs for their $1.4 million dollar novelty mecha tech? Just look up Kuratas on youtube - I didn't realize people were actually doing stuff like that until recently. It all makes me wish I had gotten into electronics earlier in my life - still, it's never to late to learn about this stuff. Here's a very brief tech article praising the accelerometer back in September of 2006: www.powerelectronics.com/technologies/passive-components/article/21859731/piezoresistive-sensoraccelerometer-operates-in-three-axes

Thanks for helping to clear that up! Funny story: Just today I started playing through Dark Souls Remastered again (NG+4) so I could test out my new back button attachment for the DualShock 4. The right button is mapped to circle, so I can run and move the camera at the same time. The left button is mapped to X, just by default. I decided to do a no-hit fight with Ornstein and Smough to put on KZbin. In one of my attempts, I accidentally bumped the left button while moving the controller and did a long gesture, but somehow my character just barely stepped out of the way of Ornstein's attack and I got off unharmed. It was amusing enough I added it at the end of the video of the successful no-hit fight. tl;dr Yeah, they should really let you disable the motion controls
