He solved the problem by giving a "miraculous" seed which then provided the villagers with food. And as you can see the seed turned out to be a monster. The video game interface is somewhat ironic in this case. The other three "Heroes" see (different) video game interfaces and treat this world like a game. The Shield Hero has been through hell and knows this world is real ... yet he has to play along (heh) with the video-gamey aspects of his powers: gaining XP (despite having no weapons at the start), increasing levels, unlocking skill trees, and even switching classes when he maxes out his level.
