More general since number of pistons per CC motor will affect bore/stroke accordingly anyways. Less pistons (1-2): More low-midband torque, less rpm, less HP, better streetability More pistons (3-4): Less low-midband torque, more rpm, more HP, less streetability

Adding CCs is the easy/cheaper route to more power compared to adding revs. That's why for example ZX6R went to 636cc when they were no longer constrained by racing regulations.
@talan75037 ай бұрын
Sometimes it ain't all about that power. I bought a 2024 Ninja 650, and I'm loving it. You can basically cycle through any gear and have power on tap. I've already put an exhaust and air filter on, with the final part being a Power Commander VI unit for it in a couple weeks. My only issue with the 650 from off the dealership floor, is that the throttle is very choppy at low rpms. If you very slightly twist it, it comes on at like 35% power and goes to 100%. All in all, I'd just recommend adjusting the throttle, but otherwise it's a fantastic bike

One thing i wanted to add, in India, when talking about the bestselling bikes, with exceptions like the classic and bullet, most or almost all of them are small 125-150 or even 160cc bikes that are absolutely dirt cheap, and also a lot of 200-250c bikes. I say 200-250 because some of them have 220 cc hearts as well. These bestselling bikes come from brands like Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj, Honda, KTM etc

It basically just boils down to how much air your head/heads can flow and if your cam/cams can adequately fill the piston bores via head flow. This is why race engines tend to be revvy and why street engines like to thunp. Because their heads and cam profiles are engineered in a manner as to get the desired outcome

250cc bikes exist because of Asian countries that limit motorcycle licenses to 250cc. It's also the reason why bikes like the ZX25R or CBR250RR are selling like hot cakes. Many people are just too lazy to upgrade their licenses, so they just get a faster bike that's still within the 250cc limit. Also, we're just poor, and we view 650cc bikes the way Americans view the Hayabusa.

I think the numbers are too confusing for most non-engineers (not me). For the average person, it would be better to focus on: 1. Pros/cons of multi-cylinder engines -- ie 1, 2, 4 cylinders 2. The differences in power pulses in perceived power delivery 3. The difference between horsepower and torque. 4. Power/weight ratio.

Only thing engine size implies with a good degree of accuray is torque. Even wouldn't need to know the number of cylinders.
@vizualjockey44192 жыл бұрын
Not exactly true, although torque does increase with displacement, the number of cylinders will play a role. Two engines of the same displacement but with a different number of cylinders between them will result in the engine with less cylinders generating more torque while the one with more cylinders providing more power. Engine performance as this video illustrates can never be reduced to a bigger engine makes more torque. The configuration and shape of the cylinders plays a very important roll in this.

I'm even going to apply the latter to the humble 650 lol-- spec sheet warriors really can't ride. I'm in group A at the track and haven't "outgrown" an 09 GSXR 600 and enjoy my GSX-S750 for canyon and mountain carving. Also can have a lot of fun on a 650. Ive been looking to start on NOT a racing sport bike, but also not a small 300cc bike. Triumph speed 400 and husqvarna 401 bikes make just around 40hp, when i saw Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 i was thinking it would make at least a little more, more displacement, a whole extra cylinder and it still only makes i think it was 45,46? How/why? Any of those bikes still work for what i would want to do with a bike, so its not the biggest deal for me, im just not understanding the why, even if mathematically or square wise it would make sense

You said cubed but wrote squared. People need to stop thinking about horsepower numbers they don't mean shit. Horsepower numbers are always peak horsepower at one specific RPM speed. You do not run an engine at one RPM. It's about torque and RPM together, then your taking consideration how and where you're riding which is why sport bikes are not any faster than Harley, Until the Harley has to shift to drop its RPMs and the sport bike doesn't continuously building horsepower. That's why you can Cruise on a Harley in 5th or 6th gear at about 45 mph we're doing that on a sport bike makes it feel really anemic. But once a sport bike gets going and you're trying to rip into it the Harley can't catch it.
@proudtitanicdenier43002 жыл бұрын
lmfaooooo do you even ride bruh? sport bikes are literally always faster than Harleys. a crappy undersquare air cooled harley isn't comparable to a Japanese engine
@vizualjockey44192 жыл бұрын
Um… I don’t think you’ve ever ridden a sport/naked/street bike bud. The weight difference between most Harleys makes up the difference in torque between them. Having 70ftlbs of torque means much less when the bike is 600+lbs. Compare this to the average 430lb Japanese street bike making lets say 50ftlbs of torque, the power/weight ratio is more in favor of a street bike the vast majority of the time. It’s not really a linear ratio.
@johnantonopoulous63812 жыл бұрын
@@proudtitanicdenier4300 yes I do ride a vmax and a r1. If you watch a Harley race a sport bike listen to the engines. If they launch at a light until both get to that about 7k RPM. The Harley will keep up but then the sport bike will take over because it can continue to rev. HP is torque*RPM/5252. So if you look at the Dino chart of a sport bike between idle to 7,000 RPM they make no torque so that means they make no horsepower until higher rpms. Which is why I'm saying if you get on a cruiser at 45 miles an hour it's perfectly happy in 6th gear. At 45 most sport bikes are not happy with sixth. I mean they're still motorcycles but it's nothing like when you get it to its power band. Also I'm not saying once a sport bike gets up into its power band that it's not going to just destroy the holy than crap out of a Harley. Just until about that 30 mph they will both be about the same depending on their torque output versus weight of course.
@johnantonopoulous63812 жыл бұрын
@@vizualjockey4419 listen to the engines of a sport bike versus a cruiser and you'll see the sport bike and cruiser in a drag will be up about the same pace. Up until the point the cruiser has to shift and can't continue to build power like the sport bike is all I'm saying. Then the sport bike will continue to build power continued to get faster because it's engine is getting into its power band and then it will destroy the cruiser.

Technically yes its very doable, especially if you are a bigger/taller person. You should try sitting on both bikes and have someone hold the front end straght up for you to see how you fit on them. Im 6'4 / 200 pounds and learned on a 250 but it was always cramped. I got a 650 after like 6 months and modified it a bit to fit me better but i was glad to have gotten the experience of the smaller bike first. My wifes ninja 300 was a fantastic bike for years and i would use it for track days, and to commute while saving money on gas after i had gotten into bigger/faster bikes. The ninja 400 is more peppy than the 300 and had a larger feel to it so i honestly think you should go with the ninja 400 if this is just your first bike to learn with and are looking to buy something better in a year or 2.. the ninja 650 would be fine if you find a cheap used one but i wouldnt buy a new one over a new ninja 400 cus the return of investment is pretty deminished.. ive ridden for 10 years and after going for bigger and bigger bikes, you tend to go full circle and look at smaller lighter bikes with enough power to do what you want it to.the key is to have multiple bikes
