I think this list is missing Svartpilen 401. That's the bike I ride, so I'm not very objective but it's a great bike. It's not even my first bike, but I still went for it. It's appropriately powerful, nimble, agile, practical, extremely charismatic and affordable. If you're an urban rider like me, it is a much more reasonable option than many bikes on the list.

My first bike was a 1996 Suzuki DR650SE. Loved/hated it. Terrible suspension, small fuel tank, and marginal brakes… but it was a thumper and there’s just something about the feeling of being on one that hits the spot. It’s the bike that taught me how to ride, and I’ll always give props for being lightweight and forgiving of my early learning mistakes.

I am 6 foot 5. An upright bike feels best to me. For whatever reason with my feet below me versus out in front like a cruiser seemed to work for me. I ended up with a Kawasaki 650 Versys for a first bike. Love it. Just feels right all around. No complaints.

At 6’2” I’m a bit taller than average and went with a Versys 1000… though it’s far from my first bike. I’m guessing the Versys 650 didn’t make the list because it’s a bit pricey starting at $9K and tall bikes that weight almost 500 pounds aren’t very beginner friendly. Take this list with a grain of salt though because ole yams put a carbureted bike at #1 🤦🏼‍♂️.

I've had the DRZ400S for 9 years as my first bike, converted to it to a supermoto and rode this bike all over san diego with it it was my daily ove never owned a car. Then went to my local go kart tracks and ripped it around I couldn't believe my first bike was still giving me smiles 8 years later and a useful tool for learning track riding. Just sold it on Sunday to Socal Supermoto and can ride it whenever I go there it'll be frolicking with all of the other DRZs on track. I've got too many bikes in the stable and starting physical therapy school. The DRZ will always be in my heart and if you're looking to get one, look for one used (can't believe they cost so much)!

First of all, thank you for the informational (and satirical) content, amazing work as always! I recently finished my MSF course and have been riding for about a month now, picked up a rebel 500 and honestly can't be happier personally. Very approachable and very capable for my daily commute and typical riding environment. I don't take interstate for 99% of my commutes as I'm 6 minutes from my job, and all of my recreational endeavors are typically withing half an hour or so. As far as interstate riding goes, I've heard it's perfectly fine on this motorcycle for reasonable distances. So excited to be riding and I can't wait for the journey to come!

I've picked up a rebel 500 6 months ago and I think it's the perfect beginner bike. Easy to control. Has a nice kick when you throttle it. I'm 5'10 and can chill very easy when sitting at a red light. The bike doesn't shake too hard like a harley, after a tiny bit of tweeking to get yourself comfortable ( things like shocks) I have zero complaints. If you're looking for a first bike I highly recommend the Rebel 500.

As a very experienced rider (40+ years on the street)..... Please don't under estimate the value of a "little" bit of boredom with your first bike. I love the list and agree with almost all.... but when the time comes that you begin to get bored, don't rush to get your next bike ! I truly believe that when you are completely comfortable, and the bike has no more surprises for you.... this is your best time to learn "Roadcraft"..... Because you don't anymore concerns with riding the bike, your able (almost forced due to boredom) to pay way more attention to your environment..... Identify actual road conditions ....ie... tar snakes potholes debris etc. and learn to identify what the four wheeled assassins are going to do sometimes before they even think of doing it.... but this is the time to let the force become strong...................PS: There is no "I had the right of way" when your broken or dead !!!!!!

The DRZ 400 is a heck of a motorcycle to start your riding journey on. It's extremely versatile, you can drop it as much as you like and they've literally been making the same bike for 20 years so pick a year and go for it 🤣 The biggest downside is the carburetor, especially if you don't plan on riding often. That said, the bike is extremely easy to wrench on and it's a fun experience learning more about your motorcycle (especially as a new rider imo)...even if that means dealing with the darn carbs, which isn't too difficult to work on.

Props for having the CB500X at number 2 but there are so many bikes you could have picked over the Iron 883, those are way too heavy for most people to start on.

CF moto will likely prove itself with time, they are actually the manufacturer for KTM and other brands we take pride in riding in the US, the bike also has a trellis frame which are known for being one of the most soundly designed types of frames from an engineering standpoint.

Agree with RC 390. Hondas, Yamahas, and Harley’s on every corner. European bike little more exclusive, exotic, pull on heart strings more. Toyota cars(Honda motorcycle) made for no drama people just get me from point A to B. A bike that fells special makes every trip an adventure. It’s the bike you always take a second look after parking.

Aftermarket is the only reason to get the 883. The only reason I ever wish I went that route is because you can do anything you want to them with tons of options and support. But even used they come at a premium over basically all other bikes if you're talking the same year/class.

As someone who is new to the light ADV/Dual Sport side of motorcycles, I think the KTM 350 EXC-F is a better option than the Honda CRF300L and the Suzuki DRZ 400. The KTM is over 70lbs lighter than that Honda and 80lbs than the Suzuki, which is massive. Not to mention the DRZ is still carbureted in 2023 which is bonkers, and not advised for a beginner who may have limited wrenching experience. Only downside to the KTM is that KTM tax (price premium).

Was hoping to see the Benelli Leoncino 500 on this list. It’s like the Honda 500’s, just with more character due to the more low end torque oriented 360° crank p-twin over a regular 180°, and it looks way better then any of the Hondas…

Dude! I think you called this list very close to what I would suggest for a beginner. But I'm not ass kissin here. I've been pushin the kid to grab a DRZ400 all along. They are cheap, parts are readily available and they run all day every day. I think its a great place to start riding. A guy won't take a new Ninja off road cuz won't wanna get it dirty. But the DRZ is a go most places do most things kinda bike. So that's what I been suggesting 1st choice when noobs ask my advice!

I am legitimately surprised neither of the bikes I own made the list, as you’ve been effusive about them in the past. I started on a Duke 390 2 years ago and then added a CRF300L (non-rally) to the stable last year. I am curious why the KLX and the Rally beat out the CRF, and why the RC, Ninja 400, etc beat out the Duke. Sadly, my 30 inch inseam made it a bit difficult to approach the DRZ, but I’ll also keep my EFI. Great video!
@ChaserTiponi
@ChaserTiponi Жыл бұрын
It's cool you mention the 300L as a beginner. A few years back I started on a 250L Rally and that bike got me ready for serious riding. I have 32 inch inseam and that bike was very vertically challenging to begin with. But a year or so on that thing, much of it in off road situations but a fair amount of street really helped me build confidence! After that time I found myself more and more on the street so traded up for more power and other things But I have NO REGRETS! If I was starting again I think the 300L or Rally version are an awesome way to start out! I think this is a really good call dude! Also in my case that bike held pretty good value so after about 18 months I was able to trade it in at a very minimal loss....
