Alternatively, "Isa Lei" is the Fijian version of a Tongan love song ("Ise Isa viola lose hina") used to court the then Princess Salote (later Queen Salote). It was written in 1915 and was heard by a visiting Fijian sergeant. From there, the Fijians adopted it to a farewell song, but they kept the Tongan melody.[4][5]

@@GreaterGood2024 It is definitely not Hawain, though it is Polynesian. There are no Bs or Ds in Hawaiian. My first thought was that it could be Māori, the native language of New Zealand's first people, believed by many to be the people from whom all other Polynesians sprang. However Wikipedia says it is debated as to whether Isa Lei is a originally a Fijian love song or Tongan. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isa_Lei ) Perhaps the Tongans wrote the original version and the Fijians popularized it, turning it from purely a love song to a farewell song. Wikipedia has the majestic lyrics of both versions of the song.

Wonder if any of them still remember the words and can still sing it like this? I'd bet at least one of them can! What contemporary group would go to the time and trouble to learn the words to a song like this? Then and now these folks are remarkable! Probably wont be fully appreciated until much later, but there are still fans emerging now once they get captivated by the Seekers Sound, thankfully!

Just a little light! Although Fiji is grouped under Melanesia, they share distinct culture, language, dressing, names, and traditions with Polynesians. Fijians are connected more to Samoa and Tonga than Vanuatu or the Solomons. They also do the Hula. They were only under Meanesia because of their tanned skin color. However, the Polynesian triangle runs through them dividing some of their islands to Polynesia. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6manp54rsuFh5o

This is one of my most favorite songs. When I was teenager, I heard this song for the first time, sang in Japanese by Japanese 3 ladies unit Three Graces through a TV program "Songs for All" of NHK. As for me, perhaps this video is the one sang in Fizzy, I think, this song in this language let me feel pacific ocean wind, like hearing Tagalog (I can not speak and understand, however.). Sayonara owakare ne Isa lei. Ashita wa funade suru hi ne.....this is the beginning of Japanese lyrics, that I had heard in my junior days. What is sorrow, there can not be found the olden Japanese content of this song broadcasted by NHK, even NHK itself can not retrieve the source video, I heard.
