Dented Cymbal? Lets Repair it and $ave Money!!!!

**PLEASE NOTE, THERE IS NO NEED TO USE A HEAT GUN. THIS WAS ALL TRIAL**
So I was shopping around for a new ride cymbal and I stumbled upon a super great deal!! I found a brand new Sabian 21" XSR Ride cymbal for sale for only $85!!! Yes, only $85... so then I said what's the catch?! Turns out, it had a giant dent as it was definitely dropped onto a blunt object. It not only had a dent but it had a nick from where it hit... but I thought to myself, a new cymbal is $300, can I make this work?! Let's find out!!!

This is maybe the only video on how to do cymbal dent repair on KZbin. Thanks so much for this. Would love to see a slow version of the hammering process. Was it hard to get it in straight?

It wasn't hard. But the key is just patience and don't try to move to much material to fast. Nice and steady hits and not trying to slam it out in only 2-3 hits make s a huge difference. It definitely took some time on my end that I just had to edit out of course because it would be a very long video.

Thanks for posting this! I just bought a crash cymbal that has some stick dents around the edge. I don’t own a body hammer, just some steel smooth faced framing hammers. Do I need to look for anything special when buying a body work hammer? Thanks!

This hammer I used is just a pretty standard soft face hammer that has a Nylon tip side and a rubber tip on the other. Pretty typical to find at any hardware or box store. It's a lot cheaper than a true metal body hammer which would also work as it's a super flat face but I choose the Nylon hammer tip so it doesn't create any marks.

I have a xsr 20" fast crash and I think it makes a great ride.

One of my favorite rides is a 20" AAX Metal Crash. I use it religiously and it's amazing as a crash/ride. I also have a 20" XSR Fast Crash, I'll have to see how it sounds as a ride as I've never tried it that way!

I'm not sure you're supposed to heat up the bronze. It has been tempered and heating up the bronze interfere with the sound.

yes I made a correction to my comment section after talking with some people. We all agree the heating is not necessary. Luckily with the little heating I did most like it had zero effect on the cymbal. Now if this was a higher end, thinner cymbal, the results could have been much different. I originally did it because in the car world, when I'm doing any body work we heat up the metal before pounding... but that's a totally different metal and scenario... and so yes, please don't heat up the metal!
