Denver Broncos Just Get GREAT Draft News

The differences between the Sean Payton and George Paton administration were clearly evident, and it's evident we are in capable hands. Today's press conference showcased unprecedented changes in the organization's management approach. It feels like experienced leaders are now at the helm, and their arrival couldn't be timelier. While I have great respect for John Elway and Joe Ellis, it seemed they had not been as dedicated towards the end of their tenure. This was contrasted sharply with the approach we observed today.

Right?!? I could totally see how tempting it would be to let Mel Kipers draft grade dictate how you draft- if after the draft he gives your team a bad grade it can lessen your fan approval but I trust our scouts opinions WAY more than I trust ESPN's

loved the press conference. affirmed my confidence in sean, and kinda restored my confidence in george. i feel the big heads had more to do with that russell wilson trade than payton, imo.

I'll throw out a theory here that will probably sound crazy but I think I have seen some evidence that it's true; I think John Elway was responsible for the Wilson trade, not George Paton.

Ben they didn't need to mention Jarrett Stidham by name. They gave you a clue as to how they feel about him by virtue of the fact that they have already said they don't feel obliged to draft a first round QB. George said they see "seven or eight" QBs who can be NFL starters. That does NOT mean that Stidham is being seen as the backup. It means that they like competition. Don't assume things not directly stated. If you want to get right down to it, there is evidence they are thinking of Stidham as the starter, & I have gone on the record repeatedly as stating that not only will he start in 2024, but he may be the long term answer at the QB position. This is based on research into direct statements made by Sean Payton as well as his past history for what he has done. Do not be surprised when Stidham is the starter & they draft a QB to compete with him in the 3rd or 4th round.

Very good points here- Sean Payton is the ultimate chess player, part of me wonders if he is stressing how much they like all these QB's to try to get someone to move up and draft one so that the 12th pick has even more value...

@@SportsTalkDenver Here are some interesting facts about Sean Payton's draft history. Over the 15 drafts he ran during his career, he chose either a defensive back or a lineman in 21 out of 30 times when we look at his first two choices. That's a 70% rate for those positions. Why would this be? Because he values the line, & he knows that the skill set needed to play in the defensive backfield requires the highest level of athleticism. You don't usually find pro bowl level corners outside the top 2 rounds of the draft. So this is not a coincidence. What about drafting a QB? Between 2014, which is the year Drew Brees turned 35, and when he left the Saints, 28 quarterbacks were drafted in the first round. Despite the obvious need to start looking for a replacement to Brees, he ignored all of them. The only one we know he was interested in was Mahomes. Finally, in 2006 as a rookie HC, Payton had both a crying need for a franchise QB as well as the perfect opportunity to take one without trading any draft capital since he had the #2 overall pick. Instead he signed Brees, who at that time was not only coming off a down year, but had only one good one on his resume, & most importantly, was only 3 months removed from a shoulder injury that was so severe Brees himself thought his career was probably over. So did the rest of the NFL. Nobody but the Saints offered him a contract in free agency, & he flunked a physical in Miami. Despite this, Payton drafted a running back with that pick. This tells us something about what Payton's likely intentions are when it comes to how he might see the rookie QB prospects in this draft. I think he drafts a lineman or a cornerback in round one. Payton's strategy is to only seek a QB if he's convinced he is a perfect fit, & nobody in this draft they can reasonably get fits his needs.

First stupid question (predictably) from Mike Klis; "Don't you HAVE to draft a quarterback in the first round"? Eh...No Klis...that's your narrative, not Payton's. Did you seriously think he was going to answer that question in the affirmative? I love the fact that the media geeks can't figure this guy out & it's driving them crazy. I bet they're freaking out over the fact that they said they can find a QB anywhere in the draft. You're correct about Elway not working like these dudes do. He was working on a bottle of gin most days in all probability.

Haha- I LOVE John Elway but he had lost his competitive edge and when you are worth that kind of $$ you don't work as hard. It's same thing we see with Connor McGreggor- you don't train as hard when you are sleeping in satin sheets as when your next meal depends on it.

John Elway preached drafting best player available - Courtland Sutton wasn't a surprise because that was Elway being consistant - and the slam on Bradley Chub - he was a very good player as well.

Bradley Chubb ended up being an ok pick for us, but when you are picking at 5 you should have contingency upon contingency and nothing should ever surprise you. The fact that it was a complete surprise just shows they didn't do their homework. Elway was GOAT as a QB and at recruiting free agents, he wasn't a great drafter (see Drew Locke, Paxton Lynch, Shane Ray, Ty Sambrailo, Cody Latimer...etc)

I wouldn't mind if we trade Sutton and ps2 as long as we get it right. We need a qb and we need to stock pile picks. We're probably going to suck next year so why give up our high draft picks. I love Sutton and ps2 but I'd trade them for a franchise qb

Paton isn’t even good at drafting imo. Surtain was a safe pick, pookie might bust if he doesn’t get it together this season, Meinerz was a solid pick but could just be luck and no one else comes to mind of great value.

Mims made pro bowl his first year, Baron Browning and Jonathan Cooper just earned NFL top 25 performance-based pay bonuses and they were 3rd and 7th round picks and if you go to the current Vikings roster it was all built on George Paton drafts
