Spot on with Clean; it really is one of those tracks that separates the fans from the casual listener. From the moment I first heard it in my flat one winter evening to today, it’s my favourite song of theirs. One of DM’s most criminally overlooked tracks and really deserves a far larger profile. So looking forward to your track breakdown! Thanks for all your hard work on this series so far, hope it’s as much fun for you to make as it has been for us to watch!

I also think of Dave when I hear "Clean". When you think of the lyrics and the time the song was recorded its a kind of a bizarre irony about it all. Dave once said that the last time he had fun with drugs was about 1990-91. During the Violator time. We all know that after that it all went downhill pretty fast for the guy. But today Dave can sing the song with a cheerfull spirit.

"Waiting for the night" for me is about our 'little escapes', our ways to bear with reality by taking some moments off once in a while, f.i. at night being alone "Enjoy the silence" reminds me of the complexity of verbal communication and of how easily what someone said can be misunderstood

He wants/tries to show her/make her feel and see the world like he see, feel, dream it. She is the receiver. But all she can see and feel depends on her soul, mind, imagination, sensivity. I think that lyrics to Policy of Truth are some of my favourite and those that I've found the most applicable in my own life, as truth is sometimes a hard pill to swallow and it may backfire if you insist on being 100% honest. When it comes to Halo, I love how after "bring your chains", the beat drops and that one sound comes in (as you said previously there are so many sounds that you just can't make up where they came from), it's like a hugr bell, or something metallic and it reminded me of the sound of actual chains, I've replayed that exact bit more times that I can remember. The line "a famine in your heart, an aching to be free" - so poetic, so relatable as a way of conveying frustration with being trapped in some kind of personal, metaphorical hell.
@abrokenframe723 жыл бұрын
Hey Vaughn, really liked how you ran through these lyrics and gave them a good examination, not just taking the easy road and saying "THIS is what they mean." The only thing I will take issue with is... I am a VERY longtime fan, and "Enjoy the Silence" is not only my favorite DM song, it's my favorite song, period! I guess if someone names ETS but doesn't know anything else... that's the marker. Anyway, great job as always. Thanks!

One of the greatest listening moments ever was the first time I heard "Sweetest Perfection" where there is that minor-key orchestral swell after "I know that nothing can stop me." I know that this Part 3 is strictly about the lyrics, but this shows Depeche Mode's genius on this album in accentuating those lyrics and creating a cinematic feel.

Thanks Vaughn! I was going to say that it was only "1st layer" of meaning of Violator lyrics, but then with 'Clean' you are absolutely right, I think: the true meaning of the song comes with age. It just depends on you, what you feel and so on... It's very personal. As you, I think he's smiling at our interpretations but it is also what he wants. He doesn't want to tell you HIS story... he just gives you YOUR own story ;)... Martin is all about sex, religion, addictions, spleen of life... but also you'll find something optimistic too... I think "Personal Jesus" is about using drugs as kind of 'spiritual leader' to give you support and a feel of being accepted and welcomed. (Wich of course is a dangerous illusion and leads into a lot of suffering as we all know) "Policy of truth" is one of my favourite songs 💝 sometimes telling the truth does more harm and damage than what you intended by doing so. The ambition to fix a problem by telling the truth sometimes leads into making it even worse or give it a weight it doesn't deserve
@boris_ev3 жыл бұрын
I feel that the blue dress in the "Blue Dress" has a meaning of nostalgia, a reminiscence of something very dear. It is common for men to project their mother onto women they meet and especially lovers. This fits perfectly with the kind of awe this simple piece of cloth produces in the hero of this song - it might have been that his mother had a dress like that. This gives a different spin for the words: "Because when you learn you'll know what makes the world turn". Our parents are also lovers. Sexual desire and admiration for the opposite gender drive the world not only as passion or commitment, but also as the precondition for childbirth: new humans take what has been before and drive it even further, thus serving the same gods and doing so, mind you, with the imagery of their tutors in sexuality imprinted in their very perception.

I find it interesting that you knock ‘Enjoy The Silence’ as not being a song that a true fan would call their favorite - and you’ve said this at least twice now. If I recall correctly, it was the song that pulled you in! As for me, I’ve been a DM fan since Some Great Reward - and ETS ranks highest based on all of the memories surrounding college life at the time it came out. Road trips, DJ-ing clubs, ex-gf’s misheard lyrics, and finally my wife and I choosing it as one of our wedding songs. It may not be the most unique or lyric track, but it’s definitely memorable and is this true-fan’s favorite DM track. ✌️

Loved the video and love you too! It's always wonderful to hear someone else's point of view on material you know so well. To be honest I never really look into what a song means but go with the flow and let the lyrics live in that moment and don't question why........yeah, I know. Say like the song Home (it's not Violator but bear with me) I never looked deeply into what the song was about but when someone revealed it was about death I didn't like that and felt the meaning of the song was deeper than that. That's the beauty of Martin's lyrics they can be taken 10 different ways, has radically different meaning to different people (have different needs) Clean was the stand out song for me from that album, a non single track with the Depeche DNA stamped all over it and also my bathtime song, I'd sing at the top of my voice and fuck the neighbours. Albums are also time machine's, transporting you back to that time when listening maybe for the first time or listening on your walkman as you journey to work. These are powerful messages that stay with you for the rest of your life and will alway take you back to your happy place. A masterpiece of sonic soundscapes with magical powers. Policy of Truth I think is also about the fact that people are entitled to have their secrets e.g. past relationships, traumatic experiences, everything that might makes them sad to remembering or makes them vulnerable.

I'm not a native speaker, I learned English by typing Depeche's lyrics in my typewriter, when I get some handwritten or photographed lyric-sheet, because there were no ability to get some lyrics the official way in the former GDR. I tried to translate it, and typed them too. In the end I got a large collection of typewritten lyrics, nobody needed them, when the iron curtain falls down and we could buy all the records with the original lyrics in it. I often thought about the meanings of the songs, and for over 30 years knowing them word by word, they change their meanings along my life. So I think, that for example "Blue Dress" doesn't mean the dress as itself. For me it's more a metapher for something like "wearing a mood", maybe a mood for melancholy or for beeing drunk or something like that. And "Personal Jesus" for me it's a song about somebody, who is addicted in telephone-sex and uses this as a substitute for religion.

Just got to the bit after Halo, I wanna say I kinda see this song like another sequel to It Doesn't Matter from Some Great Reward It most likely wasn't intended as one, however with that song saying "It doesn't matter if it all shatters, nothing lasts forever." And Halo saying "When our worlds they fall apart... it will be worth it." I personally feel like they may be connected, like the relationship is worsening or Halo is an outsider's perspective, after all IDM is so innocent sounding yet Halo has its rock influenced style (honestly, it's most likely just a coincidence but I like to think it isn't)
@Tomversal3 жыл бұрын
Also for Enjoy The Silence for me it depends on the version really, the demos sound like Martin in a relationship with someone he loves but has some melancholy of some sort, but on the album I always think of the music video where it's a king looking over the his land, all he wants is in his grasp and words cannot bring him down

I'm a little late to this party, but going to chime in anyway. 🙂 I always took the "that's all there is..." part to mean that there is no God, so do whatever you need to in order to get by with all the pain in this world (sex, drugs, whatever else). I strongly identified with Waiting for the Night when this album came out - took it as feeling so out of place amongst all the "normal" people and finding an escape to make life bearable. And as a night person, that's also my time of tranquility. I also love it as a vampire anthem. (I'm a big fan of vampire lore too!) I see Clean as coming up out of all this, but as VG noted, one could easily (and probably will) get pulled back down.
@pewburrito3 жыл бұрын
VG; tone of the album lyrics: growing up I had no doubts DM wrote about hedonism and drugs and sex (and depression and religion, etc.). Do you think Gore looks back on these lyrics and think he was a bit naive or immature? Some of these lyrics are so blunt and obvious it almost sounds self-aware and tongue in cheek, like someone who doesn't take themselves too seriously. There could be some narcissism here as well. I know Roland Orzabal in recent interviews thinks the primal scream psychology is bunk, because his own kids proved otherwise (why people do things), and he views himself from the 1980s as a bit pretentious. I don't know if Gore does the same, maybe he has an affection for his worldview in the late 1980s..some people will never outright say they were wrong about anything, they just view it all as a part of self-actualization and evolving. Lol perhaps Gore thinks some of his lyrics are "cute"?
@VaughnGeorge3 жыл бұрын
You make a great point here my friend !! Yes I think Martin may well look back and think that the lyrics here are little on the "blunt and blatant side". With regard to the song "Clean" - at the time Violator came out wasn't Gahan still pretty deep in the throws of his addiction (b/c I was thinking it wasn't until after Ultra that he finally kicked it). At any, if that's the case then it almost seems like it was a bit of either a reality check/slap in the face to Gahan from Martin Gore - forcing him to sing a song about being clean when he was anything but - or perhaps rather than a dig it might have been Gore reaching out or trying to point Gahan in the direction of recovery. Either way, I could see this having been a contentious song between the two of them at the time.

hmmmm , Great question !! It could literally be that she was wearing a blue dress!! Once again, it's open to interpretation but to me in literally means the dress she is wearing is the colour blue!! VG :-)

@@VaughnGeorge Maybe it’s a bluesy song or maybe he’s feeling blue. I know Princess Di is wearing a new dress & Monica Lewinski wore a blew dress.

The Virgin Mary wears blue in a lot of paintings. So that would tie in to the religion theme. We already have Jesus - and a Halo - on this album, so why not Mary?!

I have listened to Clean a lot and to me, it always seemed as being in denial, like wanting and trying to get clean but, being very far away from it and in actual gripes of the addiction which is even worse, because outwardly you have been putting all this work and looking put together and yet... it's actually only sometimes. Which is very dangerous, like the period of success is an interlude into something very dark and sinister, a downfall. Also it's ridiculous how this album ends with Clean and then it is the begging of actual HELL when it comes to David's drug addiction

Halo: The guy wants this girl, who's already in a relationship, what he judges to be toxic. With his huge confidence he's dramatically grooming the girl. Waiting for the night: The girl in the toxic relationship is dreaming about the guy, her only peace is the night when she can be alone because her abusing bf works in the evenings as a bouncer. She desides to meet the amoroso. Enjoy the silence: The dramatical guy, aka amoroso finally sleeps with the girl. He feels complete satisfaction as his aching heart gets a bit eased. Policy of truth: Dramatical guy, aka amoroso feels regret for making naive girl to cheat on her bouncer bf. ;)

I think the whole album is about the same characters... why the record is called "violator"? I know it was a sort of joke about metal titles, but, on the other hand, a violator is someone who violates something... if you read the lyrics, a bunch of them talks about breaking barriers...(world in my eyes, the barriers of our own views, sweetest perfection, about being invaded by something,Halo, barriers of morality, etc.) In all the album the singer is talking to you, the listener. He is telling you to give in to the view of the character everytime. The great thing is that always recognizes that sometimes he lie... almost like a tv preacher... or a rock band...

Hey Alexis, I don't know why the messages are not getting through. Perhaps he blocked the channel. Halo = Mark of divination, purity, holiness, power, beauty, righteousness, authority. Angels fly, have dominion, are free. Worn above the head like a spiritual crown. Shackles = Symbol of baggage, the mark of prisoners and sinners, symbolizing a loss of freedom, punishment. The mark of the crook, the morally compromised, the impure or disturbed. Pain and suffering, perhaps the seclusion and bondage that holding onto sins and not being forthcoming forces onto a man, guilt. This basic unbroken ring shaped object being reversed turns a symbol that differentiates the free and holy from the rest into that very opposite symbology of the marked, sullied, sinful, imprisoned, and bound. From the head to the feet. Wearing his guilt like one would wear a halo ... Inverted. In the literal and non-literal sense of it. And I actually think the lyric sounds weird or amateur on first pass but I TRIED. Good video VG! 🌹

When I listened to the Violator first, I was quite young than and many songs sort of felt sexual to me and opened me up in a way that looked at sex in a more than a physical way. Seems like I can thank Martin for that. :-) The World in My Eyes is a perfect example of that. For me it is an expression of that sexual play and orgasm - the moments when you do not need anything else in the world, what you feel is all there is and you can see the world in your lover's eyes. Everything else simply dissapear in those feelings and waves of emotions. :-)
