I'm 15 mins in, but imo self-deprecating humour works as long as you have enough self-esteem to make it seem charming. There has to be a noticeable layer of self-love to it. If you truly just hate/bully yourself, people will feel it and be second-handedly embarrassed. We can feel he's confident, but doesn't have good self-esteem, so it flops. He's constantly trying to soothe himself. Not a good look. It also has to be introspective, like point out something about yourself that makes you seem "real".
