Great Interview! Nice to see Owen back on KZbin and his spirit feels so much lighter. I agree I wrestled with the same dark realizations around the time he did, and it does lead you to a negative space before you can move past it. Glad he did! The best arguments against anarchism are inevitably descriptions of the status quo. There is no Utopian solution, we are all humans, prone to errors in reasoning and over-valuing our subjective experience in the world. As an Anarcho-capitalist, philosophically, I personally agree with all your critics, however you claim anarchists are ignorant of the reality of the world, I would argue it is actually you who is ignorant of the reality of the state legal apparatus. You both seemed to believe that if someone aggressed against you the government would handle it. Well, the reality is that it is solely at their discretion. You have no legal right to seek a criminal remedy against someone who kills a family member, or rapes your daughter, you are beholden to the state and if they fail you, you have no recourse, you can't seek another judicial body (as you would be able to in an aracho capitalist society), there are no broad arbiters of justice. I learned this reality the hard way when my close friend was stabbed multiple times at a convenience store by a mentally unwell person who was accosting his child. He got in-between and was stabbed multiple times and in the hospital for months, he very easily could have died. The evidence was clear, there was no contestation and the man who stabbed him was on the streets again within 4 months. Going to the same convenience store where he stabbed my friend. You have not had to face the reality that the government is not an agent who works for you. You work for them. Property rights, specifically in land are complex, Anarchism doesn't have an answer, but the reality is liberalism doesn't either. It just presumes the authority and exercises it's will through the use/threat of force. Wonderful discussion, Subscribed! :)
