As to not break character, I'd say 'she is teleported out by a magic item she happens to have. Teleporting in to share the spot on the side of the bed, and now *firmly* grasping your wrist, is an old and very powerful wizard... and he does not seem to be the least bit happy.'

As a creepy aside, right at the point in the story where the creep said "I have nutmeg sit on the bed with me" the video immediately broke into cheering. I immediately looked up from my cleaning saying "what the f*ck" before realizing an ad for a sports channel had started running.

Yeah, this is definitely giving new DM vibe, after almost 10 years of DMing, my response would absolutely be nuclear to a PC trying this in-game. Kid characters exist for cute bonding moments and absolutely eviscerating the PCs emotionally if you do anything to them (also fun twist villains), if a PC were creepy to one I'm retroactively deciding that kid is a level 15 barbarian or a disguised dragon and they're getting smote

Absolutely. Many people forget that not everyone has the kind of upbringing that gives them the tools to handle terrible people and say no to them. In fact, more than a few are actively prevented from doing so. Assertiveness is not an innate ability, it's a learned one and plenty of people end up learning the hard way; they shouldn't be shamed for that.

The social dynamics behind the scene alone gives OP a pass imo. He/she was DMing for a group of people where he/she was the odd one out to begin with - that's hard as fuck and obviously impacts how much social leverage you would have with regards to negotiating a kick. That being said I also think these play-by-post/text heavy games with whispers and the like is just begging for shit like that to happen. I'm not saying that people shouldn't play those types of games, I'm simply stating that I personally don't think it's worth the hassle, I'd rather not play at all if that was my only choice tbh.

It is really hard to know you have the right to set boundaries if you have been brought up to think that setting boundaries is selfish. It is not uncommon for these people to get victimized many times as they struggle to figure out if it is ok to protect themselves. There is a lot of confusion and shame involved in putting up boundaries and later for letting yourself get walked over. It's kind of amazing to hear you talk about thay without making snap judgments. Oooh oooh ooooh I’ve got a good idea for a rp I want you to use. The child stands still, their eyes close and they telepathically lift you (the wrongun) above the ground. You nor anyone else can bring you back down. Then a deep voice can be heard. “I am the divine protecter of the innocent… you have dared to attempt your fiendish will upon one of my subjects. For that you will perish and every reincarnation of your soul shall cease to exist” The perpetrator feels a searing pain shoot up their back as their spine shatters, then their limbs snap in two and their brain implodes in on itself. They fall to the ground with a pathetic thud. Their heinous soul falls into the great nothingness so no reincarnation shall arise from it. The thing inhabiting the children will keep them blind until they are away from the body in order to protect them from the sight.

Shutting this behavior down is yeah a given. But as you’ve mentioned it’s not that easy for some when it’s their first time encountering this behavior and likewise a lot of times this behavior can progress slowly. Certain phrases and jokes in character and out might go unnoticed or just ignored. This especially true when online and context is hard to relay on txt chat and even through voice chat when your not seeing this person’s body language. Identifying this behavior early is key and you can bring it up privately to the player that they need to seriously tone it down and if rules are already in place remind them this behavior isn’t appropriate. Like personally, I think people severely underestimate how hard it is for some people to be in a position of authority and make certain executive decisions. The skill of firing people is something a lot of new managers have to actively learn and be mentored on, and being a GM or some kind of community manager and throwing out people who are this troublesome is a skill that has to be similarly developed.

It's easy for those of us who are listening to this story to say that the creep should be removed immediately upon doing his creepy things. If I were the DM, I probably would, but then, I'm getting old. Well aware of the dwindling time I have left, I'm a lot less willing to waste time putting up with crap than I might have been when I was younger. I don't know the ages of the people in this group, but a lot of people in D&D are younger and/or socially awkward, and they might not have the experience or confidence to promptly remove horrible players or rid themselves of a creepy DM. For them, a situation like this might be the learning experience that teaches them not to put up with it the next time it happens. Furthermore, with friendships that exist outside of the game, it can be hard to remove a problem player from the game without damaging a friendship that might be healthy otherwise. In a case like this, however, I must question whether I would be able to continue a friendship with someone who wants to engage in ERP with an 8-year-old character - something is clearly wrong with this person and I want no part of it.

An example is a 40+ year old man (some games you fill out applications to join roll20 games so i knew his age) playing a 7 year old child...adventurer in a dnd module. However, when there is an obvious predator in your midst and you don't even so much as tell the other people about them, that is incredibly irresponsible. I really hope there weren't any minors in that group. What makes it worse is that this was online, so OP probably also could have reported him to site authorities (I'm not sure where exactly they played but I imagine any website has a report function for this exact behavior) _without even confronting him._ Not to mention that you could just do a simple ban, then block without saying anything to them, then tell the rest what a scumbag he is. I just feel like OP had way too many options and oppourtunities, and doesn't really have an excuse for allowing this putrid skidmark of a person to hang around.

First Part: I love how when OP doesn't allow the guy to have his way because it's gross and makes her super uncomfortable, his first reaction is to accuse her of railroading and nerfing his character and making him feel useless. All things a DM could do to take agency away from a player, but not what this DM was doing whatsoever. He was essentially throwing bad-DM buzzwords at them to see if he could guilt-trip them into getting their way. Also, if OP wasn't sure of who the problem was in the situation, she could've had Nutmeg act uneasy around Lion, and the next time she was with any of the other PCs, talk to them about how Lion did something that freaked her out, and when his actions are explained to another player, gauge their reaction to see that OP was in the right 100%.

When someone spends a lot of time telling you how bad you are it can be hard to sort out whether they're right or not when you aren't feeling that great about yourself. But if they keep coming back, it's a big clue that they're not being honest with you. They're just telling you things to deliberatey make you feel bad so you don't think about them critically. It functions as a smokescreen to let them do whatever they want. And that's how you know they're lying to you. It doesn't matter what situation you're in with them. Living together for financial reasons, just friends, married, it's all the same if they're treating you this way. They have other options. If they're not taking them, they're just lying to you.

Every time I watch/listen to these stories with "adult situations" in games gone wrong, I'm reminded of and grateful for my DM and how she handles adult themes and situations in game. My DM is a close friend of mine and everyone in our group, she, herself, happens to be aro+ace but she doesn't at all deprive the rest of us of adult situations in-game. She handles it in the greatest way possible for our group, essentially giving us enough freedom to lead into an adult encounter and allowing us to play out *just enough* of the encounter for context between characters (as in if the encounter will go well or not and the states of mind between them) *without actually performing* the encounter itself. This way, myself and other players are satisfied that we *did* get to have an adult encounter between our characters and develop their relationships in adult ways, but no one (including the DM) is left uncomfortable on the sidelines waiting for the game to carry on ~ We've been playing out adult encounters in this manner for 5 years now (with MANY suggested encounters at this point), and its been an excellent balance for us! I always thought that the best way to deal with players who want to push stuff outside of the normal boundaries, such as no sexualizing child characters, you should give them a chance to realize you're not going to put up with it. Ask them a few times if it's something they really want to do, and describe how it feels to their character. They may complain that you're controlling their character, but if they try to sexualize children, then they don't deserve to be in control anyway. "Are you sure you want to do this?" "Yes!" "You start to get a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach. Something tells you that this isn't a good idea. Are you sure?" "Yes." "You feel like this is your last chance to back out, before something happens you may regret. Are you REALLY sure?" "Yes." "As you try to proceed, a god smites you for your villainous and indecent behavior. You are dead. You get no saving rolls, as it was instantaneous. I'm not going to fault op or other DMS and players like this who stick out bad situations like this because they're too scared. Anxiety and low self esteem are A LOT harder to get over than people without seem to think. It literally overrides your brain and yeets the part responsible for rational thought, emotional control and logic. Sprinkle in gas lighting like what Lion was doing and you end up questioning your sanity or even where to draw the line from reality and the fantasy you've been led to believe. Obviously in hindsight OP should have kicked him and told the other players what happened the moment Lion wanted to roleplay statutory grape with a fictional 8 year old. Especially after it got worse when his first response to said fictional 8 year olds refusal was to immediately turn to force and then rage at her still getting away despite him being more "powerful". Fantasies like that more often than not hide genuine desires, never believe the excuse "it's just a fantasy so theirs no real harm to it". No one rps that crap as just something to do to pass the time. That said, if you're in some situation like that and you panic, or don't know what to do, or succumb to gaslighting and get convinced you're in the wrong. It's not your fault but at the very least please tell someone, the other party members, a friend outside the game, family, even posting it on Reddit or some other social media, anonymously if you can. Yes, please can we do some stories that _don't_ revolve around se*ual predators for a change?? I submitted a story not long ago that's just the usual D&D silliness, maybe if we submit a bunch like that he'll have more to choose from.

The fact that more people don't immediately say "All right, gtfo, you're done" in situations like this is incredibly concerning.

"the 8 year old girl suddenly changes to a flesheating monster and swallows you whole. nothing is left. Not even bones. Later she changes back to her original form, wondering what just happened. Giving a slight burb, wondering why she is feeling so full, that she has the feeling that she might not be hungry for the next 3 days." - That is powergaming. - "No, that is PowerGMing, by the law of "I stop your BS before it gets any further. Permanently." " Wow. this player sure did jump a line.

I don't know this game well, but couldn't you have "Nutmeg" leave the island in a panic, find the rest of the group, and tell them what Lion tried to do? Then let them decide how to handle him/ eject his character from the game? That's what I would do.
