Okay Derek my husband is a professional musician for 50 years this is going to blow your mind but John Travolta was not dancing to You Should Be Dancing when the movie was filmed. The Bee Gees music was not added until after post-production. He was dancing to some other song. I am not sure what it is. They wanted the Bee Gees to do the soundtrack for the movie so the Bee Gees came in heard the beat to the other song and made You Should be Dancing for the final film version. He also feels the part you didn't know about (if it was a guitar or keyboard) he feels that it is a guitar with a wah-wah pedal. They used organs and pianos in the 70s. Synthesizers came in after that. In the 80s with the keyboard. During the 60s and 70s anything that you heard and music was done by guitar players or drums there was not a lot of synthesizers around to make up beats. So let's hear it for the guitar players.
@coffeeonthedeck62583 жыл бұрын
@@ladykuether1731 With all due respect, your husband is incorrect in thinking the Bee Gees "made You Should Be Dancing for the final film version." You Should Be Dancing was initially released from their Children of the World album (July 1976) and went to No. 1; then it, as well as Jive Talking from their 1975 Main Course [come-back] album, were re-released to both be included on the Saturday Night Fever album a yr and a half later. You/your husband may or may not be thinking of John Travolta's account of how >Staying Alive< was originally planned to be the main dance scene song, but Travolta told them he had been practicing dancing to You Should Be Dancing FOR WEEKS, AND ALL BUT BEGGED (the writer/directer/producer/R. Stigwood--or whoever) to use YSBD for the main scene. He was successful in convincing them, and consequently Staying Alive was placed at the beginning of the movie as he's strutting down the street with his paintcan. And the rest, as they say, is history!🎶🙂🎶

That was John Travolta dancing in the movie "Saturday Night Fever" featuring many songs by the Bee Gees including this one, "Staying Alive" "Night Fever" and "How Deep Is Your Love" to name a few. I think this dance scene featuring "You Should Be Dancing" helped gain Travolta an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in the movie. It was unforgettable. You should watch the movie. Although there were many disco songs out by the time the movie was released, it helped cement the disco craze in the late 70's. A fun time for all us old geezers! This is my favorite BeeGees video. It's one of the few times Andy Gibb sang with them. If you look at Barry the video of the song To Love Somebody by the BeeGees in 1967, he looks just like Andy in this video. I was married with a toddler when he died and I still cried. He died on March 10, 1988. Cause of death was Myocarditis brought on by a viral infection. Most people recover from it, but Andy's body was unable to fight the infection, even with antibiotics due to his history of drug use. He died 5 days after turning 30 years old. He left behind a 10 year old daughter named Peta.

You appear to have some musical appreciation, and it's nice to see that you can hear everything as intended. You caught the nuances of the piece! I was a kid when this came out (too young for the disco's) but I remember it very well. This is when bands were judged on raw talent, no autotone, no sampling, or computers, just pure musicality. Glad to see a younger generation who loves it as much as we did when it came out.

The song was a hit tearing up dance floors across the country. You're right. There was a longer dance mix version that was played by DJs in the clubs. Disco was made for dancing, so most artists had longer versions of their hits. Usually 7-10 mins long. Folks would seriously work up a sweat on the dance floor. Not surprising wearing all those double knit slacks and our polyester shirts with a ubiquitous silver or gold chain. That was the life at the end of a work week.

Barry's vocal capability was incredible far more than running from falsetto to the lower registers. He had very much a mimic capability. If you listen to any of their older music and even going into their country music you can hear his voice mimicking other singers. He does an interesting Michael Jackson sound as well. Course him and Michael were good friends and Michael spent a lot of time at his house in Miami. Barry's the bomb.
