Ah! I've been waiting for this one for a long time... It's definitely one of my favorite songs. The meaning of the lyrics seems to be a bit different from what the music video shows. The guy she's been waiting for a long time who comes whistling is a drug dealer. The general idea is that drug use and addiction ruins life.

Thanks for the info. I also wanted to add that I think (not 100%) I remeber that she lived in the streets or at least had no fixed home. Another think that goes with the passers by without look idea is that she sang in the Paris métro for a while, it may have a far link.

I love your reactions and can tell you have an "eclectic" love of music. I have an artist suggestion for you: David Lasley who had one of the most beautiful tenor vocals I've ever heard. Give him a listen. He was a backing vocalist for many artists and also had a solo career. One track of his comes to mind "It's A crying Shame" although it isn't his most popular. Keep listening to great music.

The music evokes existential feelings of wether or not life has meaning or not. Very Janice Joplin/ Piaf hybrid. The poetic translation of the words is much more profound than the basic English meaning. “ and you came whistling in the night”…as if you didn’t care about anything or anyone. Relationships that don’t work and convey regret that another being has no connection with life and love. Makes me feel like a child again and cry.
