I listened to the whole “Inner Image” CD on the way to work today and really enjoyed it. Super calming and positive sounds for a stressful drive. “The Snap” is one of the songs I really vibed to

Hi Dereck, congratulations on the connection to Jackpot Records. They are a very cool label; they really got on my radar with their Silver Apples reissues. I was even kind of toying with the idea of getting the Martin Denny/Exotica stuff they recently put out, though I’m not sure how much of that I would really listen to. I didn’t know James Brown had made so many Christmas records. Definitely remember “Go Straight to the Ghetto.”

Jackpot is a sick label, more aware with their great Wipers reissues and they have an amazing record store in Portland too

Totally agree with you about compression. It’s a struggle in my current bands album; I’d rather use basically none. It makes music more “perfect” and even, but not really in a good way. I believe Alan Parsons said he only uses compression on bass and vocals

I feel mainstream musicians are obligated to put out a X-mass album, I never buy them

That’s great insight, learning of how little compression you use and of how your driven by what you’re listening to. Thank you for that. Could you also talk about and show the equipment you use for recording? I think I’ve heard you say that your limited in the equipment you have, so it would be great to learn how you achieve world class sounding music with what use and in a home setting.

I simply use a midi keyboard and what's 'in the box' of my DAWs. No secrets. I honestly think the trick is to satisfy your ears.

There are also things like creating realistic sounding midi drums. Something I haven’t been able to do even after years of trying.

I do modify the drums to get good sounds. Experiment with the settings.
