While it's true Martin Short is very quick-witted and clever, there's also another dimension to his admirable skill: he's constantly coming up with (and writing down) new ideas, jokes, funny words or turns of phrase, and other comedic stuff that he can "plug in" to various situations as needed. That's the case with most professional comedians: they have a "store" of material they've previously prepared, which can be plugged into various scenarios as needed. It's part of what makes them such good comedians.

Jiminy Glick the character is a spoof of several talk show hosts of the 50s through the 80s (like Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson, Dinah Shore, Mike Douglas), but I suspect that a lot of the personality Martin Short did as Glick was based on the demeanor and mannerisms of Merv Griffin. @@fomofud9479 Because Martin Short busts balls like no-one else on earth, and as Jimminy Glick he is vicious. Of course they know it's a joke, but most are caught off-guard. They have to pretend to be all cool with it, but look for the subtle clues that they're not. Sorry -- 'subtle' means 'not obvious'.
