I love this stuff so much! Thanks for the behind the scenes! I just upped a cover of Temptation of St. Anthony the other day!

You always make the drumming seem effortless when it’s plainly not! That’s a gift plus a lot of hard work.! Thanks for these uploads, so glad I was privileged to see you live several times over the years..

@@DerekGrantMusic I think I’ve used it on most of your trio archive posts 🖤. Hah, but @ one point, it seemed like you had an algorithm that posted each day a new video (‘Past Live’ drum cams and clips) at same time and same day, I posted each time “what good are sundials” ⏰ wasn’t sure if you caught those hah

Was there ever a deliberate reason why Matt and Dan seemed reluctant to share vocals on songs? To me a lot of standout parts would be like when Matt comes in on Satin, or Dan on Mercy Me (and I always had a hunch these were Finn production nudges, but I could be wrong).... But these moments are so rare. I also noticed a strong tendency over time for Matt to provide harmonies for himself while you provided them for Dan. Kind of a super broad question but do you have any insight on why that seemed to be?

@el.sant0 Matt and Dan have both said that they think it's weird to have two different voices singing about certain subjects - for instance, a love song about a singular person, so that's certainly a factor. Regarding the two songs you mentioned, I had to do a little detective work. Dan sang all of the parts on the demo of Settle For Satin but Matt was singing the pre-chorus by the time we did pre-production for the album - this might have been to give Dan a little breathing room and allow the parts to overlap slightly. For Mercy Me, Matt sang Dan's part during pre-production but didn't sing it on any of the vocal takes for the album, so that may have been something that Jerry Finn suggested. I had a better ear for writing harmonies and at times it was just easier for me to record the part rather than teach one of the other guys. My voice worked particularly well with Dan's which is why I sang on a lot of his songs, sometimes Matt would sing the parts live. Matt rarely sang harmonies on his own songs (unless it was a higher/lower octave double of the main vocal), it's almost always Dan on the albums - Burn is one exception I can think of where I do most of the background/harmony parts, otherwise I only join in for the occasional three-part harmony.

@@DerekGrantMusic I might have been largely thinking of the octaving when it comes to Matt "harmonies". Thanks for clarifying. Any insight on what lead to the decision to share vocals much more on Blood, Hair and Eyeballs?

@el.sant0 I wasn't there for most of the recording of the latest album, but I suspect it had something to do with the way we wrote everything in the studio from scratch so there weren't any preconceptions about who should do what/where.

@@DerekGrantMusicon that note, I found the lead up to BHE to be a confusing one. The album reveal already had Atom in the photo ops, and between that and the "a new future of Alk3" marketing blasts, unless a casual listener scrolled down to the Spotify credits, I don't think it's unfair to say that they might assume Atom drummed on the album. Can you give any details on your time with the latest album? Such as when during the process you exited? What state the songs were in at the time? Any preproduction insight? Etc.

@el.sant0 First off, I came across this clip today, quite coincidentally, and thought it might be of interest to you (kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2bKqWNvatN3jrM). In regards to your questions, I didn't follow the marketing for the new album because it sat in a sort of weird place for me, as you might imagine (it still does) but a line up change right before an album gets released is less than ideal timing, if they didn't start publicity for the new line up right away - every write-up and admat about the album or tour would have outdated photos with me in them which is not only confusing for fans, but would also be a bit of a bummer for Atom. Mike Felumlee was on most of the ads and posters for the first year or so that I was in the band so I know how it feels. In regards to my involvement with the recording of the latest album, Dan and I both flew to LA mid February 2023, the three of us went straight into the studio and spent a few weeks writing the album, then Dan and I tracked all of the bass and drums after which we had to move the production to a smaller facility. The plan was for Dan and I to fly home for a few weeks while Matt recorded guitars and started vocals but I had some issues at home that prevented me from flying back when Dan did and shortly thereafter I came to the decision that I should step down from the band. They sent updates of the songs as things progressed so I could chime in but I wasn't involved in mixing the album or part of the artwork or marketing.

@DerekGrantMusic - Is there any particular reason for the cardboard box centre stage? I was thinking it was where a wedge monitor might go but maybe I'm just over thinking it 🙂
@DerekGrantMusic8 ай бұрын
@soundslikesalai3375 Ha! You think you're overthinking it?! I actually tried removing it when I first started editing the footage! I think it's a box of drum heads that got delivered and was thrown on stage, why it stayed there for so long is anyone's guess. Matt kicks it around a bit in one of the clips.
