I was wondering why every time I take showers my skin turns red does this mean I have it
@kwdkwon4 жыл бұрын
@@dunker4life586 no that’s just increased blood flow to the skin. When you’re having a hot shower the blood vessels dilate to increase heat loss through thermal radiation through the skin. This is normal. Dermatographia is completely different. It is caused by pressure to the skin which results in raised bumps where pressure was applied. Hot showers can make your skin more sensitive to this pressure, resulting in the bumps forming more easily.
@dunker4life5864 жыл бұрын
David kwon no I mean every time I take a shower I take a cold shower cause when I get out of a hot shower my shoulders will be a lil itch and burn but this probably isn’t from dermatographia but I think I do have it cause I drew on my skin with a pencil and it was 3D looking and feeling and it puffed for about an hour and a half and the redness was there for about 7 hours

I just found your channel today, thank you for being really informative. I was diagnosed with dermatographism, discoid dermatitis, and meyerson naevus today. I’ve been having itchy rashes and moles all over my body for about 2 years now. I’ve been to the doctors and dermatologists so many times and they give me steroid creams and I’ll be on them for months and the minute I stop using the creams, the rashes and itchy moles come back and I’ve gotten more rashes/itchy moles over time. Last time I saw a dermatologist I was crying bc I knew they weren’t taking me seriously. I’m in pain 247 and showers make it worse and I wake up constantly in pain at night. And I have to wear shorts and T-shirts even in the winter bc it just hurts too much to be fully clothed. But today I saw a private dermatologist and he really understood and listened to me. He gave me a strong steroid cream to use for 6 weeks and use an antihistamine twice daily. He thinks an infection caused my dermatographia (we both believe it’s either from covid virus or vaccine) as I first started getting symptoms after my first vaccine. (Not saying it’s definitely from it and I’m not an anti vaxer, but thats the only correlation I can think of as I’ve never had eczema as a child and I’m an adult now), but I’ve always had hay fever so that may have contributed to it. He thinks taking the antihistamine in conjunction with the steroid cream will help. I feel so relieved I finally have some answers, I just hope it works. Also sorry for the long comment.

I’ve been on Zyrtec (2-4 a day) and Tagamet (1-2 a day) and Hyroxizine at night pretty much since then. I also have dermographia, especially when carrying bags on my arms and shoulders. I go through times where it’s better and then it gets worse again. I’m going to see some new dermatologists and allergists at MUSC next week. I do notice that they get worse with emotional stress, lack of sleep, and too much caffeine. I gave up coffee entirely and that helped some. Thanks for these recommendations! Im going to put my spare tub of cerave in the fridge right now!

UK resident here, who suffers with MCAS. Whilst dermatographia is pretty well known about in our NHS, MCAS is not unfortunately so this very debilitating and horrendous disease is made a little harder to deal with when doctors aren't aware of it or even believe it. I've thankfully got a great team now and I'm on several types of daily antihistamines and 3 weekly shots, as I was literally going into anaphylaxis multiple times a week ( dread to think how much this disease costs suffers in the US, I'm very grateful for the UK's health system )It's A bit better but the thing that helps most is complete avoidance of triggers.. perfumes, pressure and stress. It's very isolating. Many foods are even off limits and I get horrific burning on the soles of my feet when I try and walk, the symptoms are many. Sending HUGE love to those that suffer with this, and thank you to Dr Dray for bringing this to light, educating in the most passionate and compassionate way. It means a lot. X

I have had this condition for 6 or 7 years now and developed around 11 years old. I do not take antihistamines, but when I have bad flares I may use cool lotion or water. It's been really annoying but after a while you become more aware of what to avoid and the pain in general seems to dull. The hardest thing to overcome is the urge to not scratch, but even that goes away after a while. The most issues I have are flares during stressful situations or really people just being weirded out. It gets easier to deal with and less stressful as time goes on. It's not all bad, you can let people write on you when they're bored!

Don't let dermographism be such a bad thing in your life. It sucks I know but eventually you'll get "used to" or know better how to act about it. I'm 16 and I was diagnosed 2 years ago, it's a love and hate story lol Mine's kinda aggressive and sometimes I have really really hard weeks but I always try to focus on how cool is that I can write and drawn on my skin (I don't do this, cus it itches a lot but when it's not that strong I like to show it to ppl). Even tho it's not that good, I feel special having it. Besides the hurt is something awesome that ours bodies can do. And we can use it as an excuse to pretty much everything right?😂 There's always a good perspective about things so try to find it. Maybe it's the fact that this condition can get better in some time... Idk go find one. You can choose to be happy so choose it. Anyway study about dermographism a lot, try to understand how yours acts and what you can do to make it better. But don't ever let that stop you, you're bigger than the itch. And remember that everything goes away one day. Sorry for the huge text.. Hope you can get better soon 😘💜

Hello Dr. Dray, my skin develops red streaks or lines after scratching (which are not raised, but look as if these are bleeding spots or rash under the skin). And these red lines are particularly severe whne scratching after hot shower and persist for a very long time. Is that dermographism or something else to worry abt? Thank you!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️

got this after the of covid vaccine. went to my dermatologist and she asked me the usual questions, change in detergent? test for allergens etc. all negative and normal. she then explain what urticaria is and what causes it. She then ask if I had anything like treatments or on medication that would involve my immune system. I then told her I took the covid vaccine which could have meddled with my immune system. She said she had heard people develop this with the vaccine but there are no current study to validate this. I have also developed heart palpitation after the vaccine. Both my dermatologist and cardiologist said I am in no danger.

I just started getting symptoms of this a few months ago. It is absolutely miserable. Every evening where my bra or pants touch my skin will erupt in red welts and it itches so much but the more I itch the worse it gets. It’s all over my damn torso and back, hands, even the bottom of my feet. I am at a loss of what caused this, have gone 23 years without this . It makes me so self conscious now to wear revealing clothes because the fabric often causes rashes . I just want to go back to before ;-;

Great video. Not to depress anyone but I have had dermographia since I was a child and I am 59. I agree with everything except leggings. I choose really smooth or fleecy ones that don’t rub. I find they protect from accidental rubbing from other things. Funny story. I had allergy testing done but didn’t mention dermographia because I considered to be just something I had like freckles. Had no idea of the pathophysiology. My skin went nuts and freaked the nurse out. The MD asked “Did you know you had dermographia?” Yes, I relied. “You didn’t think to mention it?” Oops. Still have no idea what I’m allergic to. My keys to keeping it at bay are Allegra in the am, Zertek in the pm and keeping my paws off my skin

Hi Dr.Dray, I was diagnosed with Symptomatic Dermographism 4 months ago and I’m experiencing so much pain after ever single light touch on my skin. So I can’t even live a normal life without antihistamines daily, because the skin is being touched by pressure so many times in a day, and the pain shows up after every single touch. Since I was diagnosed I have been taking short showers with lukewarm water, apply CereVa lotion right after each shower. All of this started gradually a month before the initial outbreak, I took multiple hot showers a day during winter without any lotion applied afterwards, then slowly I was feeling dryness and needling sensation in my skin, it got worse and worse slowly then one day I had much worse pain on the skin after shower. Since then I have been taking antihistamines daily. I really don’t know what else to do, I don’t want to keep taking antihistamines, do you have any suggestions?

What an informative video! When I first got this condition I had an active coccidiomycosis infection with cavitations in my right lung. My skin started to be very sensitive early on. I would feel a tiny but intense random little itch and of course had to scratch it. That sometimes would escalate into even bigger red stripes and itching. The only thing that would break that cycle would be a steroid injection. I was taking fluconazole then Noxafil but I still had three surgeries and finally lost my lung. Supposedly free of cocci since 2010 my skin has calmed down quite a bit but I still have occasional flare ups. Clothing labels make me crazy among other things and if I can I carefully remove them or put medical paper tape over them. Thank you Dr. Dray for educating me once again💕

This was fascinating to listen to! I was/am suspected to have MS due to left sided numbness but I have not shown any lesions. I still have many other symptoms that point to an autoimmune disorder of some form and this was something my neurologist actually checked for! Scratched down my arm lightly then checked it again after like 5 minutes and man, it was a bright line. I was amazed and went home and did the same thing on my entire family to see if it happened to them too 😂

I know this may be a relief to people who thought they had scabies for years. I thought I had scabies and was miserable because it wouldn’t go away after so many treatments. Thank God for my wife who did more research and tested my skin to see if a pattern she wrote on my arm would well up in a hive, and sure enough it did. This happened to me once, but I just thought it was maybe the scabies reacting to the ink on the pen I was messing with. Such a relief to know it’s just an allergic reaction I’m having to dust etc.

My own dermatographia started developing after i went through a long sustained period of my life with extreme stress and traumas where i went in survival mode for many years. The moment i left that environment for a safer one it was like my body was physically releasing all the stress i did not allow myself to feel. Been dealing with the disease since then. It has been years now and never completely disappeared but as i started to heal and my stress levels diminished, so did the disease, which over the years is less extreme now than at its beginnings. I still get pretty bad flare ups though. I did notice moments before beds at nights is when my skin for some reasons gets the most sensitive and will flare up at any clothing that rubs too much. Thankfully ive found a cream that rly helps calming the flares and taking a fresh shower helps too

My fiance JUST got diagnosed with dermotographia at 31 years of age. 🙁 We are getting married in August of this year and my worry/concern is that she bought a very tight, form fitting wedding gown, which she purchased BEFORE she got dermotographia. I am SO NERVOUS that if she wears it she will get one enormous hive over her entire body causing a possible wound or infection. Mainly because the material of a gown is thick, rough and full of sequins. Am I worrying too much or is my concern legit?

I suffer from it! listening to you I am pretty sure that it was first triggered by my truly dramatic allergic reaction to mosquito bites - the area of the bite swells 2-3 times - so I am quite familiar with anti-histamine meds. i always thought i couldn't do anything about dermatographism but you made me optimistic about it!
