Hypochlorous acid is becoming more popular in skincare lately - thanks, in part, to Tower 28's SOS Daily Rescue Spray. But what is hypochlorous acid and does it help with redness and skin conditions like acne, eczema, rosacea, and more? As a dermatologist, I've used hypochlorous acid sprays in clinic to prep for treatments for years and have seen the benefits personally, so I wanted to make a video all about it.

dr. ellis is just want to say thank you so much for making this product, because i had never heard of hcl as skincare before i learned of it from your skincare line. a few months ago my eczema flared the worst it had ever had on my face, there were large areas that were incredibly inflamed, itchy, and felt raw. i hated washing my face and doing my skincare because just even having a damp face felt like it amplified the itching even more. i even cried a few nights from how painful my skin was feeling. i started using your hcl spray in january and my skin has completely healed skin using it. most of my itching is gone, the redness and scaling has healed up, and i finally feel at peace with my skin and love looking at myself in the mirror now, so thank you!!

I have been using the PREQUEL hyper chloric acid for several weeks and it’s fantastic! The bottle and sprayer are perfect. It gives you a nice fine mist. I have noticed considerable lessening of redness in my skin since I started using it. I am going to be buying it by the bulk, especially since it’s significantly less expensive than the tower 28.

Wow! I’ve been using the Prequel spray for a couple of weeks now. I didn’t even realize until the end of the video that it is your brand! I don’t think I would ever switch just because the formula has proven to be gentle and effective, even all my most sensitive skin days. Also, the mist is a necessity, and this one has got it! I do think it helps with redness, and I think it’s really the only thing that actually makes a big difference as opposed to just using concealer to cover it up.

I have really sensitive skin that will flare up with hives, contact dermatitis, etc etc… This has been a huge game changer for calming itching and speeding up that looooooong healing period for dermatitis. It’s also great for my deep cystic acne in that I feel like it really helps calm things down so things aren’t as inflamed, tight, and painful. I am so thankful it’s become more commercially available and can’t see myself without it. Definitely part of the first aid/skincare line up for life.

Walgreens has been selling hypochlorous acid since forever (goes by the name "Walgreens Cleansing Spray") and Amazon has been selling the Skinsmart for a very long time too. I find it a little crazy to be promoting brands like Tower 28 for something like this when they will charge you so much more for the same ingredients. Again, Walgreens, close to the bandaid aisle. Probably CVS too.

Hi Dr Ellis, what is the difference between the % strength in terms of end result when applied to skin, and disinfecting surfaces? Is higher strength just faster kill time? Also what is the relationship/conversion between % (as the unit you used in the video) and “ppm”? Lastly how would one know if the hypochlorous acid has “gone bad”? You mentioned that depending on how it’s stored etc. it can have an impact. Thank you!

Thank you. This video made me realize that when I sometimes get irritated around my eye when I wake up that it’s probably from my CPAP mask. I don’t always clean it once a week. I think when I sleep scrunched up, that is causing mild eye bag irritation. Will definitely be trying this for sure. I have had a piercing that I cannot remove for the past 10 years and for the past 10 years it was CONSTANTLY getting infected. I bought this and sprayed it on my ear for 2 days and I have not had an infection in MONTHS. All it took was two days and two sprays. I am literally completely amazed. Nothing helped my ear. Nothing! This spray makes me want to get piercings again. I used to have so many but they would always get so painfully infected and bleed. I am so happy I bought the spray. I truly cannot believe it. When I tell you the infections were chronic I mean it. 10 years and I don't think that piercing was ever not infected.

I LOVE hypochlorous acid! I use it for my Hidradenitis Suppurativa as well as to clean my CPAP equipment (since it breaks down into salt and water so it's harmless even if some residue is left behind) and even to clean my eyelids to prevent styes from growing since I'm prone to them. I also keep some on hand to clean my hands when I'm out and about but can't fully wash my hands. It's better than hand sanitizer because it also kills norovirus when hand sanitizer does NOT.

You mentioned that you're prone to eye styes. You may want to check your diet and/or your supplements, because if they contain fructose, that may be a likely cause. My husband's doctor informed him of this many years ago. Our daughter has had eye styes twice and both times she was on a medication that had fructose in it.

I’m on bottle 3 of the prequel brand. While I was waiting for first bottle to arrive a while back I ordered the small bottle of the tower28 and two other brands after I heavily researched all of them. The tower is ok….i used it fast as I have severe rosacea and looked like an eggplant…the other ones I got were more like the mild antiseptics we used back in the day in surgical procedures. Both are fine…but then my prequel arrived and the heavens opened! With it and the big tube of the prequel moisture thing my skin slowly began to look so much better. I use the prequel a minimum of twice a day sometimes 4…and I plan to always have it on hand along with the moisture product…of note I do use prescribed medication topically for my skin but I was still n eggplant before the prequel…just my experience…thank you dr Ellis!

There are different strengths of Hypochlorous Acid and some of the skincare products out there that include it might have other irritating ingredients included.

@@TennisObsessed It could be the strength of the HOCI (Hypochlorous Acid) or other ingredients in the formula or your skin just doesn't like it.

I have a question not related to this video but to the one on shaving your face. I am 48 and i have blond lip hair pretty bad. I have always been told that if i shave it then it will come back black. I want to try shaving my face but i am so scared it will come back black. can anyone answer this for me ?

Good news Sheila! That is 100% a myth (I was told that as a kid, too). Shaving does not affect the hair follicle, so it does NOT change the color or texture of the hair.

I have never tried hypochlorous acid, but I struggle with acne and rosacea so am curious to give it a go. I'm in the UK - the brands I've found online either don't disclose the % in their formula or have a ph of around 7, which I'm not sure it's good for daily use on face. I have bought one which on label suggests to wipe off after one minute. Any thoughts? Also - would it be still effective when sprayed in the day if wearing spa/makeup?

I am in the UK and buy mine off Amazon. Natrasan has an Hypochlorous Acid that can be used on skin or as a general disinfectant around the house. They sell it on Amazon in different sizes and I have the 500ml spray to use around the house and then a small spray to use on my face.

Which one did you end up getting? I’m in the UK and was trying to pick between clinisept+ and clinisoothe+. Natrasan also has a ton of good reviews. I didn’t realise that they have different % and acidity levels. I just compared ingredients and they are all the same. I really do want to know if there’s any difference as I will also be using it on my face!

@@banandababa Not all brands sell different levels of HOCI (Hypochlorous Acid) and they will tell you in their descriptions its uses and if it is skin safe. I use Natrasan General disinfectant and skin spray but I have just had a look and it has been changed to Advanced Hypochlorous Spray. They only sell one type but in many different sizes. Buy the smallest first to see if your skin likes it. I now buy the 5 litre and decant it into different size bottles to use around the house and on my Skin.

Don't fret about the PH because most skincare will alter the PH of your skin as that is how it allows the ingredients to penetrate your skin barrier. As long as the description states it is safe for skin use it is worth trying. If you are still concerned look in the Baby section for HOCI sprays as they will be weaker for Babys skin.
