Descent Planning Made Easy with Mental Math | Find Top of Descent | No VNAV

Two methods used in descent planning are demonstrated.
The first method is extremely simple and shows when to start the descent based on time.
Method 2 shows when to start the descent based on distance and what rate of descent is required.
VNAV makes descent planning easy, but for jets like the FlySimWare Lear 35, there is no FMS, and no VNAV. Descent planning is easy without VNAV, and after watching this video, you will be able to plan a descent without the aid of VNAV.
One thing to consider when descending is true airspeed (TAS). TAS will drop significantly from cruise altitude to altitudes below 10,000 feet (in a jet). Will descent rate stay the same during the descent or will it change? A combination of methods 1 and 2 will make descent planning easy.
The simple math for both methods are shown at the end of the video.

Many years ago I was taught this method: Take your current Flight Level altitude ASL and remove the last digits leaving you with three if above 10,000 feet, or two if below 10,000 feet; divide the remainder by three and add 10. That gives the Top of Descent point, I have found this brings you down to around 2000 feet above sea level and short of the intended landing airport giving you a decent altitude, time and point of entry on the approach. 12,000 feet ASL = FL 120 div by 3 = 40 + 10 = 50nm = Top of Descent point, the distance from the destination to begin the descent. It works okay for me.

I'm still watching and thank you for the informative video! I was aware of the "distance x3" method, but not the rate of descent calculation. Good stuff!

I am still watching too! I learned the method of difference in altitude needed to lose time 3 for the distance to start the descent. In the diesel 9 I started with 1500 per minute and recomputed the progress based on ground speed. And ground speed had to be calculated be the DME only gave you distance no ground speed. 😀🛫

Good video thanks! Lots of different ways. My favourites are 3:1 rule (+ buffer to slow down), AND GSx5

I'm still watching and thanks. I've become lazy, relying on VNAV now that it works. I used to do this mental math all the time before VNAV worked in MSFS.

@@thecorporatepilotdad Thank you. It is easier if I could make videos. BTW I made a script that uses VoiceAttack to play the correct live audio from LiveATC based on the frequency in Com1. New England area only. Would you like to test?

Love 💕 it ! Specially when you’re flying Learjet 35A :) Will you make a tutorial on it (please) ?

I already have. One tutorial with takeoff v speeds and takeoff power settings is uploaded. I’m doing additional videos on approach speeds and configurations, ref speeds, and there will be a guide to go with it. These are channel member videos. KZbin revenue is so low on these video types that if I didn’t make a little extra from channel member videos I wouldn’t do these tutorials at all. That channel member level (private pilot tier) is 3 bucks for a month. There are non-pilots charging 15 bucks for guides.

I never use method 1. EX: What is ROD for 17,000/11 minutes ???? Method 2 use alt. and speed (visible on 6 pack gages). Time is not visible on basic planes =)

Approximately 1500 fpm. With 11 minutes to go, 1,000 fpm would be 11000’ and 2000 fpm would be 22000’. 17000’ is just about in the middle so 1500’ fpm would be a good starting point. I haven’t seen you comment in a while. Good to see you back in the comments!

@@thecorporatepilotdad I use this same mental exercise to make an approximation, but unlike your great experience, my experience of less than 200 hours in real flight forces me to calculate the TOD as quickly as possible to keep my concentration to aviate, navigate and communicate ! I didn't expect to like the Lear 35 so much. It seems that I was nostalgic of FSX... I'm also going to propose to Navigraph to create fictitious but usable charts for the Meigs airport (KCGX) as a tribute of this old simulator which inspired many to become pilots, virtual and real!

@@06L Ditto on the Meigs charts. I had that exact thought a few days ago. If my memory is correct, there were two approaches into CGX. A VOR and a GPS approach from the south. I have contacts at Navigraph. I will send that email. (Update: Email sent)

@@thecorporatepilotdad I send this to MSFS forums if that can help... I wrote to thecorporatepilotdad how much I loved the Flysimware Learjet 35 which reminded me of my first flights on FSX and that I would like to have (fictitious but usable) charts from Navigraph (and Simbrief) for Chicago Meigs airport ( KCGX) in tribute to the first flight simulator which inspired thousands of users, now on MSFS2020. Could Microsoft and Navigraph recreate this mythical airport for free for our greatest happiness? -Ex. PPL and flightsimmer since 1989

@@06L Ditto, except mine was whatever version was available in 1983 on my first computer, a Commodore-64. That's where I spent many days flying from Meigs, learning the basics of the traffic pattern and GA flying in general. I was 16 or 17 and the passion started when I was probably 4 or 5. A little over a decade after discovering MSFS/SubLogic, I was fortunate to take lessons and get my PPL. So KCGX will forever be dear to me personally! I sure wish that I'd had the opportunity to visit, land and fly a few circuits there before it was abolished. Remember the iconic Good Year blimp that sat stationary over Soldier Field? That would be awesome to get that back in the sim 🙂
