Would never have thought the original PS1 was too weak to perfectly run good ol' Descent. The game was really ahead of its time, it holds up even today and the pixels only add to the retro charm. The textures are still beautiful and the gameplay is super tight. The only issue is rather weak mouse support, even with source ports (pitching time is very slow). But it's perfectly fine to play with just the keyboard.
@yellowblanka60584 жыл бұрын
I mean, it's not a locked 30, but then again, it's running the game as well as most PCs around the time of release would have. These were the early days of 3D when "Smooth 30 FPS" was often a tagline on 3D accelerators.
@casedistorted6 ай бұрын
I know this was 4 years ago but more recent versions of DXX Rebirth have fixed the pitching time (pitch lock setting) issue which allows you to release the pitch lock and also uncapped turning, so now X and Y axis with mouse look is very fast, smooth, and feels great. I was just playing the game today and the mouse look is incredibly fast and precise (using a Logitech G Pro Superlight as well)

Definitely runs better on the Pentium, but this was a really good port!
@yellowblanka6058 Жыл бұрын
Considering a Pentium PC would have been orders of magnitude more expensive than a ps1, this is running quite well - probably about as well as most people’s PC would have run it at the time.

@@yellowblanka6058 I think you're right, this is probably how it would run on a 486.
@casedistorted6 ай бұрын
@@yellowblanka6058 I think it would still look better on PC though, the wobbly edges and the garbled textures with everything scaled down so bad definitely makes it look rough compared to the PC port. Even if the framerate might've been the same the PC versions always looked much better.
@yellowblanka60586 ай бұрын
@@casedistorted Oh no doubt, but if you didn't have access to a multimedia PC at the time, this would certainly have been a decent enough way to play the game, and it had lighting effects the PC version lacked. As I said, this is roughly what it would have looked/run like on a middle-of-the-road PC with reduced resolution/settings. Higher-end mutlimedia PCs were anything but cheap back then.

@JamesPound Жыл бұрын
Oh man, those projectiles are like 1/4 the normal speed. Is that from the difficulty setting or because it's on PS1?
@Cyberbrickmaster1986 Жыл бұрын
Does this game work with analogue controls? Because the original controller doesn't have enough buttons to cater to the game's multiple control inputs. I'm just used to playing it on a keyboard, but I'm curious if it can still work alright with controller mappings, since I'd like to play it on the Steam Deck.
@heardofrvb7 ай бұрын
It works with a unique Dual Joystick controller. Fortunately, Duckstation can set the controls based on it, and it feels good.
@Cyberbrickmaster19867 ай бұрын
@@heardofrvb Thanks for the heads up, but I think I've become more acquainted to running the PC version via. DX1-Rebirth and the custom layout on Steam Deck. The trackpads and additional buttons can prove to be very useful when playing any game in the trilogy on Deck.

@sealboy1211 Жыл бұрын
Nope when this launched, dual stick was not a thing yet. You played this with the dpad and buttons. Like hold a button to go forwards and look with dpad. Maybe I’m wrong it’s been so long now I guess but I can’t recall if I touched dual sticks before the ps2. I think turok on the 64 with the c buttons and the joystick was as close to dual sticks as I had.
