This is not just a great detailed biograpy of an amazing woman who was far ahead of her times, but it's a good history of parts of the Middle East, and parts of World Wars 1 + 2. It's very well written and insightful, and it has wry humor too, which keeps it interesting and upbeat. I hardly even noticed the time fly by! I fully recommend it, and this channel's other videos. The ones I've seen all have the same great qualities. ❤

Thanks so much for your great videos! I loved the one on Amundson, but my favorite so far is the 1st one I saw, about Ibn Battuta. This one on Gertrude comes as a very close second, because she is exactly like I wanted to be, except for the forbidden lovers and their tragic deaths. It's quite amazing that you could produce such a volume of great work in such a short time, since you started this channel in 2021! BRAVO to you for your wonderful work ! ! ! And please don't stop! Yes!!!! I recently watched the movie in which Nicole Kidman portrayed her and I literally fell in love with her instantly!!❤😊 I’m sure it was partly a result of Kidman’s physical beauty as well as the beautiful job she did with the role but I honestly loved the character she played. I’m not sure how much of the screenplay was true but it sparked a desire to investigate this woman further. What a historical giantess. Thanks for the video.

I can watch that film on repeat, it has a magical quality. I did some travel as a lone female in islamic countries, learnt a little Arabic and travelling on the train met and spoke to locals it was magical. My daughter and I also travelled using local transport and local hotels eating locally and going places that tourists pay a fortune to go or they simply don't go. The experience was similar but not to the extent that Gertrude did. I wish I could still do but I got sick and Arab spring happened, although I did travel when first sick, an arm didn't work and eyes were a bit dodgy, but I get all those magical experience back watching this film. ❤️❤️❤️

What an amazing reveal of women's rights, the benefits of wealth and position to women, contrasting with women's poverty and criminal enslavement. What a high bar she sets for us common women! It boggles the mind to learn of the things she was able to accomplish whilst most of us have struggled along with everyday duties.
@LadyBug196710 ай бұрын
Therese, I thought about this as it was laying down the groundwork of her background which was three generations of entrepreneurial wealth wherein a woman of that background could--if allowed by her family, which she was-- explore ALL of their interests and anything that took their fancy they could delve into. Why? BECAUSE actually they weren't earning a living in any way, shape or form. The same thing occurred in America. WHEN you look at some of the very famous women, they came from great wealth or at least enough wealth that they didn't have to worry about the mundane things that women in nowadays have to worry about. So actually I think you and I and others like us need to pat ourselves on the back and say-- we did quite well in attending to the necessities of life, while still making time to read or listen to biographies about such women as Miss Bell, who are inspirational. BUT, I frankly ABSOLUTELY do NOT believe they are in any way more distinctive or superior-- shall we say-- to the modern-day working woman, who juggles🤹 career and👯👬💑 🐶🚴🤼🐱🐁family and housekeeping &: often 🧔 parents & 🧑🦳grandparents who need tending to as time goes. And, all the while, trying not to forget to smell the 🌹 🌹& relax🧘 & catch a falling💫 if they're lucky ☘️

One amazing lady of courage and fortitude, a trail blazer. I was sad about the demise of her life. At only 58. Maybe if she had got married , to the love of her life, and had a family she would of lived a different life. Possibly a more fulfilled life? Who knows that wasn’t to be. Unique woman, for most men, probably intimidating with her intellect and knowledge of the Middle East.

Thank you for this wonderful Presentation of the life of Gertrude Bell, Desert Queen. Your writing and narration is exquisite i was spellbound and on the edge of my seat. I could have continued to. watch and listen long beyond the 3 hrs and 17 minutes ! In my opinion, it was not long enough. Not only have you managed to tell the story of this wonderful, brilliant and accomplished woman, but you presented a cohesive and easy to understand History of the Middle East, especially relevant to events in my lifetime and current events in the ME today. i did watch the movie starring Nicole Kidman, and found it very romantic. the movie, however, it did not fully explain why she was known as the Desert Queen. i am fillled with admiration for the way she knew what she wanted and used all of her resources , including her femininity to acheive her goals.and she used her talents and abilities to help others wherever life took her. ..Her adventures in the desert reminded me of the book and the movie ,”The Garden of Allah”, with the themes of tragic romance, and the spiritual mysticism of the desert wilderness.

Thank you for giving us this fascinating, beautiful documentary! I am astonished not to have heard of Bell. Sadly, the 2015 feature film by a famous male director starring Nicole Kidman was excoriated by viewers because it focused on Bell’s two love affairs while neglecting the rest of her long, fascinating life: her early life, her lifelong concern for the conditions in which women live their lives, her exploits and adventures, and her contributions to the Arab Revolt. Perhaps some day a female director will be inspired to create a lavish, exciting homage to a woman ahead of her time.

Gertrude Bell never was a spy. This very curious lady was producing all her work in order to be helpful to all tribes at Middle East. All tribes loved her for that. TE Lawrence was also doing same things and he became same legend. It was Western Europe governments to misuse their work for their greedy territorial negotiations for their mandates around Middle East, and using false word spy. West Europe countries started needing their own territories only around 1918 year, when they realized the petrol became precious for their goals.

The most underrated female political figure of our times, Yes.. And yes she manipulated many and very cleverly. Today that's called diplomacy. It is necessary to get the parties to understand that a common understanding is much more important than the individual wishes of the loacvl chieftains. Yes she was against voting rights for women. The world she saw voting on men in politics would not do women any good. And this is partially also the case today. She was romantic yes, but most of the men she met were hopelessly incapable of living up to her expectations. That's the sad truth about intelligent women. There are no men (or only very few men) that fulfill such a position. The divorce rates in western countries show this. Most women have to accept men that only partially make do. Apart from that. It was a very good presentation well documented, well presented and very interesting Thank you.

I hope this documentary can help bring her role into the foreground of history, especially in museums and institutions for public education. Three hours is long, so here a suggestion. Even if you edited off the last section about the war years..add an introduction....surely it could be circulated and viewed more easily by those trying to unravel the history of this area. Its so important now, as a teaching tool, with the Israeli Gazan war fraught with versions of how we got here, its so necessary. God bless you.

Thanks for your praise and suggestions. I will in due course chop up various parts into the "Excerpts" playlist, for more specific viewing of the various rabbit holes I tend to go into, and for those viewers who struggle with long form content. Its always been my custom though, to put the subject into continual context, which is why I usually have a long background to begin, as well as some discussion on legacy to conclude (and frequent tangential rabbit holes for topics that intrigue me). Its definitely hard to cater to all tastes, and I appreciate that three and a quarters hours is tough going for some.

I became aware of this extraordinary woman in 2016 (maybe 2015), I think after watching "Lawrence After Arabia". Then looking her up I couldn't believe I wasn't taught about in history class. So I wrote an article about her (& a few other unsung women) for March of 2016 on a blog. Her life is the stuff of legends 🍸⛩️.

What a woman. A Tour de force . No wonder she was honoured by Arabian leaders.

As a woman . Gertrude Bell for me , is my type of woman. Her pioneering life and ability to not live the life of your average middle class Victorian woman is awesome . She is like me in the fact that i too would stick up for underdogs . In the British isles were i live and overseas too.

Charles Dickens was a real Hero, to Tell US about the horrific children abuse which was absolute normal in the past, awfully prudish society😢

Depends on your perspective. Children need a balanced sense of responsibility or they grow up to be irresponsible adults who have nothing to offer society but complaints.

The entire video about the eminent Gertrude Bell had me engrossed. Allan Kalamir PhD compiled a fascinating narrative that at the same time explained the complicated cultures and politics in Mesopotamia and Levant during the turn of the 20thC. The modern images and movies did not detract but could have been referenced a little better. Thank you, I want to know more!

Thankyou for your kind words! If you go over to the University of Newcastle Website, her archives are such a rich source of material that you'll spend hours engrossed in study. Extraordinary human being. I'm very glad you enjoyed my presentation - at 3 hours its a big ask, but I felt I had to cover every detail I possibly could.
