For Giorgio Galli, design is all about light and shadow. To him, this is how an object - whether it’s a building, a car, or a watch - reveals itself and tells its story. As a designer himself, Galli is always looking, always taking things in, allowing inspiration to come as it may. This is an approach he has come to over time and is constantly refining. When it came time to design the Giorgio Galli S1 for Timex, he found this approach invaluable. “The S1 has been designed with light in mind,” Galli says. “The way the shadows create the shape of the watch and the way the light catches the corners, the diamond-cut indices - these are fundamental.”

I only collect Timex watches. It's a hobby of mine, I don't buy watches for investments, it's pure passion. I'm 58 and I still have those magical memories of my first Timex watch. Today I own about 60 and I have them displayed in a case like a work of art. I only wear about 3 of them on a daily basis, but I love seeing them displayed like that in my Man Cave and of course, whenever the mood strikes me, I can way anyone of them. They all are working.

And make it a 38mm, and get rid of all that writing on the bottom of the dial - completely kills any class this watch might have had.

Another excellent design from Timex -- and thank you for the inspiring profile of Galli. I'd love to see a future collaboration between Timex and Hodinkee (similar to the recent Swatch/Hodinkee limited edition).

It’s because this guy, and by extension Timex, have no idea what they’re doing. But the market favors larger watches, so they’re making business decisions rather than aesthetic or practical ones. They’re catering to the market, rather then setting trends that the market should follow.

Beautiful sales video. But if this is all true why are so many of his designs like homage to rolex gmt pepsi or batman or iwc etc etc. where is his originality? The watches look like nice copies of expensive watches not real design. And now with his watches at nearly 1000 euros in some cases i wonder how much they will hold their value compared to say a rolex value retention. And leaving aside resale prices when there are watches on amazon from timex for 30 euros i find it a hard thing to do to pay nearly 1000 for a timex just because Mr Galli is a wonderful sales and marketing guy and he has stunning photos and videos. Am I missing something? Timex Waterbury Legacy looks like a Rolex Datejust on Jubilee bracelet. Other Timex are Hamilton Khaki homages, the TW2V02000 looks like an IWC Ingenieur homage Genta yet again theme homage. Design something cool and original and new I say don't just do wonderful sales videos.

A disappointing choice from Hodinkee. The S1 is a clumsy oversized watch with a pointless empty-space dial, and overall American (lack of) aesthetics; Giorgio did not save the day (perhaps his wallet, at most). Half a thousand US dollars for a Miyota and the false impression of a revival of a long-gone horological history (of Timex). Is this a (paid/pro bono) promo video? A quite inexplicable choice for Hodinkee...

But he was born rich, and the sides of the case look horrible and they don't even offer it on her peach/pink strap, and besides Timex needs to bring back their own pin-lever movements built for a new age and with better materials.

It’s a great looking watch for sure, but it isn’t anything special nor does it offer anything unique or innovative. I’m not really sure what this “designer” actually designed to warrant his name on the very plain white dial... but this entire video is just him trying to justify his overpaid/irrelevant position. Timex can just pump out weekenders, expeditions, and reissue Marlins all day long and still be profitable.

Matthew Scott it actually has a very innovative case design using industrial methods of construction that as far as I’m aware have not been used on a mass production watch before. For the same price of course one can get a Seiko with inner bezel alignment issues, derivative dive watch looks, crappy quality bracelet and a very ho hum mediocre movement one step above Luddite!

ianmedium Thanks for your rant about the Seiko SKX... it wasn’t asked for, but at least you were able to turn a topic about Timex into your own personal stage to display your disdain for an unrelated watch. To get back on topic, what case innovations are you taking about? I’m sure industrial case manufacturing has more to do with engineering than design, but hey what do I know
@matthewscott3689
@matthewscott3689 5 жыл бұрын
ianmedium Lets not forget that the Timex, with its mystery movement is $450... the SKX is around $220. I’d also take an SKX any day over this Timex S1. But for $450, a better comparison would be the Seiko Sarb033 or 035... which has sapphire, a metal bracelet, and a better movement. Seiko beats Timex all day everyday. I am glad to see Timex offering more mechanical watches, but their price point needs to come down to around the $200 mark, like the Marin series. $450 is ridiculous. Oh, the the most common complaint about the S1 is the movement is noisy, haha... that’s something I’d expect from a $200 Miyota. And for the record, my SKX is as quiet as can be
