Over my whole life (and I'm in my early 60s now) I think I've only ever owned two pairs of jeans, and I never wore them that much. I know some people literally live in jeans, but I never found them very comfortable. I went through a phase of wearing "combats", but once I started making my own clothes and found a trouser pattern that really works for my body, I've just made those. I've made them in a variety of colours and weights of fabric - lighter cottons and linens for warmer weather, paired with tee shirts, vest tops or cotton/linen blouses, and lined woollen versions for winter, paired with jumpers and scarves. The same principle applies to me-made skirts, tee shirts, sweatshirts, dresses etc.I think once you find the "perfect" pattern for a staple in your wardrobe, there's little need for purchasing multiple other patterns. It's easy enough to make tweaks to necklines, pockets and other details, add trims etc., to introduce further elements of variety. A few hardworking patterns can be the basis of a very satisfactory wardrobe in my opinion. As for the idea of buying something to wear once and throw away - that's total anathema to me. If something eventually wears out (after years of use) my instinct is to see whether I can use the fabric for anything else - a pair of trousers that had worn through at the crotch recently yielded sufficient fabric for a waistcoat 😊 So satisfying! "Waste not, want not" seems to be ingrained in my psychology... I'm excited to see how your vintage capsule wardrobe develops 😊

I totally agree!! I know what you mean, I can't stand to throw something away if it still has some sort of purpose 😊

Love it! I have been thinking along the same lines and I think you nailed it with the 6 Cs. I am looking forward to seeing your capsule come to life! I am small to and love to thrift. I have finally come to the realization that I only need a few versatile garments, I look best and feel comfortable in a few colors and styles. So I have been decluttering, altering clothes, sewing through my stash but not really to augment my closet, but rather hoping to hone in on a core capsule that can serve me well. Context and character are so important, I didn't have a label for that concept but I will be remembering that going forward.

Thank you for your thoughts on a capsule wardrobe. I, like you mentioned, have been doing research. Your points are thought provoking and helpful. I look forward to the whole series. One additional consideration I’m finding is shoes. What shoes will go with the multiple pieces of my capsule and suit my activities much the same way as my clothes? I’m also finding what my style really is as I try on and declutter and condense.

Yes, true! I am only taking a couple of pairs of shoes with me so they'll just have to do 😁 Yes, I'm enjoying the learning process too.

You did give me pause though when you said ‘Cloth’ because I hadn’t thought about linen creasing and I’ll be making the #charmschooluniform skirt which is big… 🤔 Apart from if I”m in my PJs or exercising I like to be a bit glam/smart so not sure how that will feel…

I think linen looks very smart when ironed and you can also get away with the crumpled look with linen too 😁

Oh my goodness I'm so excited to have found your channel. I have recently come to similar conclusions about a capsule wardrobe in that I am taking huge inspiration from the way in which vintage patterns and previous generations used clothes. Not so much in their style (although I will incorporate some of it) but in their genius ways of detachable elements and multiple pieces. I'm really looking forward to watching this series.

I agree with you, I also never wear jeans they are so uncomfortable. It would be great to wear dresses in winter, but I don't care for tights. I think you are on to something here with sewing a capsule, great idea! Cheers!

I've made some high waisted loose fitting trousers for winter and they are very comfortable. I will probably adapt this pattern for my summer capsule trousers too 😊

Jeans are so comfortable. Wear them all the time. I have always hated sewing.. vintage stuff I have tons of. As an artist I donʼt work in an office - ever but in studios as a textile designer.

I’m into bright colours as well. So what you are making is exciting to me. I made some overalls last year that are vintage and I love them so going to work from that. Love how all the pieces work together.

Hi I love your 6 tips! Funnily enough I’ve just started working on my Spring/Summer vintage style capsule wardrobe which was prompted by a piece of Cadbury purple linen I was gifted. It is a colour I don’t wear, though the shade/tone does suit me and I was thinking, what can I wear this with? I decided to hunt for prints that had some purple in them and found several in my stash. So my capsule will be purple, turquoise and multiple prints so I can sew my stash! 😊 Yay for bright colours… None of this grey and black malarkey. 😂

Really interesting, a good summary of the problems with ready made clothes that lead to dressmaking, and the pitfalls of the resultant choices ….sewing for the life you lead rather than the one in your imagination. Thankyou!
