I've bought the fabric to sew my vintage inspired, colourful and sustainable capsule wardrobe for my trip to Europe in the summer. In this video, I show you my fabric haul and explain the 11 items I will be sewing ... if I have time!
I'm also exploring the vintage sewing patterns that inspired me. Looking at the fabric, colour and cut that makes the items in the mix and match weekend wardrobes work so well together. These small vintage capsule wardrobes include a range of clothes that provide outfits for many different activities and occasions. This is the inspiration for my capsule as I need the pieces to layer over each other and combine in different ways as the weather in Europe in June may be variable.
I am making 3 suits: one in plain Navy/blue, one in a plum/red colour and one in a print fabric that is my anchor fabric and will tie the other two colours together. I am also sewing a dress to wear to the western wedding and a sari blouse that I need to make for my Sari outfit for the Indian wedding.
DEFINITION OF A POCKET FARM
[noun] A pocket farm is a small area of land that has been repurposed to grow food and/or keep small animals (worms count) as its primary purpose. It is an oasis of sustainable agriculture and wildlife habitat in or around a densely populated area. May include: balconies, patios, driveways ... or anything you can think of really!

The necklines are what I’ve always loved about vintage patterns. Boatneck and jewelneck and square necklines are just so much more interesting.

You've nailed it with the 6 C's. So much of my difficulty with capsule wardrobe revolves around the collars and the cut. They all seem to default to T-shirts, jeans and blazers to avoid that challenge. I don't wear that style. You've also nailed the bit about prints. Choose the print(s) first. Choose one that has the neutral colours you want to use. Very useful. Yay! I'm enjoying this series very much.

The top worn under a sari is called a choli. Its a tight fitted cap sleeved front fastened thing made out if a woven fabric and breaks just below the lower bust to the end of the rib cage. Wearing a sari with the petticoat/underskirt with a tucked in top doesnt work well unless you have a lot of experience walking in a sari. The first time i tried to wear a tucked in western shirt, i walked out of my sari. In Vancouver BC, the matrons make the choli break right at the waist for winter wear. I have mine break about two finger widths from where i wear my petticoat. You want it tight fitting so the sari floats on top. You can use the 1940- 1950 fitted bodice as the base. Set the sleeve cap in towards the neck more than western standards, about as far out as you would a close fitted vest or waist coat. Also gather or pleat the top of the sleeve cap. This acts as a bumper to hold the veil pleats on your shoulder. Also, use a safety pin to hold your bra strap in place to the shoulder seam. You can pop it through to grab some of the veil if its giving you greive.

Thanks 😊 That is very helpful! I certainly don't want my sari to fall off at the wedding 🤣 I will make it to the waist, as you suggest. I think I will make a toile of the choli before using the sari fabric to make sure it will all work and looks right, as there are obviously a few more things to think about than I imagined!

I've just discovered your channel and I'm intrigued to follow how your capsule wardrobe(s) develop. The idea of starting with a floral/patterned fabric for a dress or separates that can look like a dress, and then picking out two solid colours from it for coordinating skirts/trousers/jackets is inspired! Very excited to see all this coming to fruition 😊

Just discovered you! I'm impressed! Your capsule wardrobe makes excellent sense. The way you have explained the process and your tips on fabric selection is really helpful. My preference is woven fabrics too. I love the way you show how to mix and match outfits. AWESOME! Thanks for sharing! I value your skill and your advice. Being mature age myself, a keen self-taught sewer for years, I love to pick up new tips. Now I'm keen to watch your other videos.

A tip for anyone who wants to have a go with this but cringes at the tiny sizes in the vintage patterns (like me!). Or has trouble pulling a few random patterns together and making it actually work (also like me 😂) I think it’s Butterick, but don’t quote me there. They have ‘lifestyle’ patterns which have a variety of ‘matching’ patterns, which you can mix and match like this lady’s vintage examples. They frequently have a pant, skirt, jacket or blazer, a top and a dress. The other pattern companies probably have a version of it too. Have a browse through their patterns.
