Hey, cool video man. I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in but then it turned into a ramble. Here it is anyway :P. I never understood those box things. Yeah, they hide the outlet but they really don't hide any cables. You still need to run cables in and out and the biggest eyesore is usually the cables running around and across the desk. They would be more useful if you attach them to the bottom of your desk I guess. I use Ikea's cable management Signum basket. It doesn't "hide anything per se but it lifts it off the floor and no one will ever notice the cables unless he/she crawls under the desk. In my opinion, the only things you really need are velcro strips, outlets you can attach under your desk, and a cable management shelf/basket that you attach under your desk. It'd throw in a cable sleeve, depending on how you run your cables, but I usually run them along the table legs and attach them with the velcro strips. The clips are useless most of the time since you never run just one cable towards the computer and attaching it anywhere other than under the table just looks ugly to me and is basically pointless. Using them to hold your cables is also a messy solution. Since then you would have cables just lying on the desk with no purpose when you are not using them, which kind of defeats the point of cable management. I'd rather use a USB hub that attaches to the desk (either that or use a bracket or double-sided tape). Then I'd store the cables away when I don't need them to remove them from the desk surface entirely. My issue is that I have a Wacom tablet that needs 2 cables to run (power and USB C to PC) and a wired Keyboard and there's no way to hide those cables without drilling holes in the desk :P. Everything else is seamless. On a side note, Ikea's cable management solutions are VERY cheap and are affordable to anyone that needs cable management.

It looks like you have an apex desk, I just got one also and am having trouble getting the power cords for the lift to stay up- I tried 3m sticky tape you have here and zip ties/duct tape but the cords are so heavy they eventually fall down unless you were to use a preposterous amount- could you have a shot or post a pic where you show the whole underside for a bit as opposed to just small segments so I can see how you did it? Thanks

Cable management isn't something I'm used to because I never had so many accessories until about 2 or 3 years ago. Double sided tape and Velcro strips have always been my best friends, but I never knew that mounting brackets for zip ties existed. Neat! Those gear ties are really sweet though. I'll definitely have to pick up some of those for my setup! To eliminate cost though, I'll probably re-purpose a box I have lying around to hide power bricks and whatnot, if I go that route. My big question, however, is if I'm going to mount my monitor on my wall to maximize desk space, what are some options for hiding the cords?

The little hole in the Velcro strips are for attaching the strip to a single cable, so it stays on the cable when you unwrap the cord. It's great for stuff like extension cords or corded power tools, cords that you roll up when you aren't using it.

IMO normal zip ties are still reusable, you only need small, thin objects (like paperclip or your nail) to loosen them, but those reusable zip ties are also a convenience in case you don't have a paperclip around.

How do I conceal the "open" side of a desk? Basically, all the cables used for my desk and PC face outward toward the center of the room with nothing to conceal them. All I can find are videos of people concealing cables when their desks are already pushed up against a wall. Any tips?
@kalowinta8 жыл бұрын
Use the boxes that he showed or try mounting a power strip under your desk and run the cable along the desk down the leg.
@hikeskool8 жыл бұрын
Geekologically Advanced yup, I have been experimenting with various tie downs and sticky-tack. So far it is a pretty big PITA. In the end, there is still the back of the PC with a bunch of cables hanging out of it. I like the box idea but there really is nothing large enough to fit my UPS. These are good starter tips but it seems like every "cable management" video only looks to address cables that can be jammed up behind a desk placed next to a wall.
@kalowinta8 жыл бұрын
+hikeskool ahhh the old UPS.. I have to hide mine too. I'm in korea they use 220v there is no way I can get away from the very hideous step down transformer. My UPS is 110v btw. So you stumped me there LOL good luck!!
