"This song is definitely made to make you not feel good." Yeah. Being sucked into a dragon's heart while my friend carries me around like a purse puppy isnt the best feeling.

Bungie's music is usually a unique blend of orchestral with a heavy focus on percussion. They often deviate from that with this song often accompanying cursed monsters called the Taken who corrupt and distort their surroundings, their music usually features heavy electronic distortion to match. The "III" in the song's title is probably because this is the third layer as most songs in Destiny have layers ranging from ambient to intense action depending on what's happening.

This specific song is the 3rd iteration of the song made for the Forsaken expansion, used in the raid for the expansion "Last Wish" for the queenswalk encounter. The entire encounter is taking the heart of the boss you killed just beforehand and running it back through half of the raid while fighting endless enemies to dispose of it

"Pressured" is the best word I can use to sum this one up. You can feel that frantic rush immediately, that says "DO THE THING! NO TIME!! DO IT NOW!!!", but it comes through with a "You're used to this heat, you got this already." for context, most players hear this while taking the heart of a wish-granting space dragon (that they just killed) to it's containment altar, but the heart is actively trying to eat them one by one, while a legion of mindless eldritch horrors try to stop them. The longest 2 minute walk in history.

This song plays primarily during the final encounter of one of the game's raids, which, to keep it simple, involves you and your party trying to escort a dangerous object through hordes of the Taken (the goopy black and white-looking enemies like the large dragon in the video art) trying to stop you, before the dangerous object completely collapses in on itself and bad things happen. You're on a timer and have to do a sort of relay race with it. The Taken themselves are a group of enemies who have had their will stolen from them (hence, "Taken") and now are eldritch and otherworldy creatures of darkness, arbitrarily teleporting around the battlefield and using strange powers.

100% the absolute best song to listen to as you and five friends football a dragon's heart to a group of witches to purify the curse on it.

How dare you call Riven ugly. She was a very beautiful creature. EDIT: Also, I think the reason the song sounds so distressing and kinda twisted is because Riven herself was Taken by the Taken King, Oryx, and so she was twisted and remade into a horrible unkind shape and set against those she guarded and whom guarded her. That's the reason we needed to kill her. EDIT2: I forgot to mention, but us killing Riven was actually part of a trap. We were effectively baited into killing Riven, by The Taken King's sister Savathun, and if I recall correctly Savathun used the act of us killing Riven to power a ritual that captured that entire pocket dimension that Riven had been in to create a groundhog-day 3-week time loop where we'd keep killing and killing and killing within this closed system. Destiny has a big focus on Ontology, or on the nature of existence, and concrete power can actually be gained through killing. So even though we'd killed Oryx, and then killed Riven whom he'd corrupted, his sister Savathun effectively turned our predisposition for killing and winning and our desire to keep doing so into a generator to feed her power. Savathun enabled us to kill in perpetuity, and fed herself with the runoff energy of us doing all that killing. EDIT3: Oh, and you said the song sounded like it was breathing, like it was a creature. This song plays while you're carrying Riven's heart after you defeat her, and the objective is to get the heart to where it can be cleansed of corruption, so the countdown is basically how many heartbeats she has left.

“Alright, alright, alright! Let’s see what we’ve got. Hive, bring a sword!” “Hey, you ever headbutt a Kell? Don’t. You’ll break your neck. Use bullets”. “Destroy mines, yes?” ‘Shell of What Was’ has some motifs & instrumentation similar to another track, ‘Gambit’; which plays when starting a match in the game mode of the same name. As an aside; Talk about perfect timing! For Destiny 2 to be brought up, when its newest expansion, Lightfall, is under a month away from release.

In Destiny 2, you play as an immortal space-magic-wielding warrior that saves humanity about two dozen times (so far), called a Guardian. You team up with 5 other Guardians in each of the game's endgame raids. This particular song is from the Last Wish raid, where you fight a devious, super-powerful wish dragon, called an Ahamkara. After you defeat the Ahamkara, your team has to go inside, grab her heart, and bring it about a half-mile somewhere else before it traps you all inside it. The second you pick it up, this song starts playing. It's meant to be an "oh no, this is bad, hurry, hurry, go, go, go, NOW!" type of vibe. And it works pretty well in my opinion.

Destiny 2 has a skill of using the music to tell stories. They also reuse leitmotifs and themes throughout their music. The music is usually split into sections, and used throughout encounters. There's also usually an "Adds Phase" where you set up the encounter and clear adds, and a "Damage Phase," which goes for a little bit, and then ends, and you repeat. The music, meanwhile, takes snippets from the soundtrack, and loops them. The Adds Phase starts with one section of the soundtrack, then when you go in to the Damage Phase, it starts playing a different part. Different actions by the players also trigger music shifts. When the boss falls below a certain health, the music might be different! Interestingly, this is not one of them, because the encounter is a race. There is an explicit time limit in this encounter. The short explanation of this encounter: The players, 6 Guardians, have just gone through an entire raid to kill an incredibly powerful Wish Dragon. The encounter where this plays is when you grab the Dragon's heart, and carry it back through the raid, to seal it away. You have to go fast, because every so often, the person carrying the heart gets sucked into it, and the remaining Guardians have to keep going. In other words: You have limited time, your allies are slowly disappearing, and enemies are pouring out of the shadows to stop you. Run. A major theme that they use throughout is "Guardian." If you decide to look into more of the music from this series.

The song is played during a running scene where the raid team is trying to outrun a curse that will eventually imprison all six of them in a tiny pocket dimension for eternity. There are so many moving parts to this encounter and enemies just spawn non-stop. It's definitely uncomfortable, and the encounter is tense all throughout, until they get to the end and the curse is canceled and the team is freed.

The music to the finale of a long grueling raid. You just killed a wish granting dragon corrupted by an eons old evil of the universe. Now you have to run the heart of that dragon back to a group of witches to purify it. As you're running, your teammates are being sucked into the heart itself. There is an option to do this whole raid without anyone dying and this music hits so hard when you're on the final step of a flawless run. It bumps the anxiety up to an eleven.

The soundtrack works so well in the moment. In most raids, you feel relief upon killing the final boss. In this one, you are immediately thrown into another stressful encounter after killing the boss, and if you are doing it for the first time you just don’t expect it. Bungie are experts at knowing what feeling they want to evoke and melding gameplay and music together to do it.

YOOOOOOO SHELL OF WHAT WAS I remember doing the raid this is from, Last Wish, with my console friends when crossplay for this game first came out. This encounter, the Queenswalk, was one of the most fun things I've ever done in this game. Someone else summed it up, but basically this encounter is a relay race. You and your fireteam have just killed the raid's final boss, Riven of a Thousand Voices, the last-known Ahamkara (wish-granting, shape-shifting, dragon-like creatures of immense power and cunning). You must carry her Heart back through areas of the raid in order to complete it, each member of your fireteam having a countdown before they are sucked into the Heart itself, leaving the next member of your team to carry it before they are sucked in as well. This continues until the last person deposits it at the end of the route, completing the raid. It's incredibly intense and requires a lot of coordination between your team, so it's very satisfying when you complete it! I love how you mentioned the track feels "alive", as even though you've killed Riven in the previous encounter, Ahamkara have a tendency to transcend death, and Riven indeed is not quite as dead as she seems. Plus, carrying her still-beating heart through the encounter fits too! If you'd like to hear more specifically from Forsaken, or even just the Last Wish raid, check out Keep of Voices, Watchtower, and The Man They Called Cayde.

This song plays after you've gone to a magical realm, fought ghosts and zombies to get deep into the heart of a castle in order to slay a wish-granting dragon and rescue a queen. This song plays as you've killed the dragon and now have to relay race it's heart to the people that can contain it before it draws in and traps all your teammates. At the end of the song, you're the only one left holding the heart. Your friends are trapped inside of it and fighting for their lives, the darkness is closing around you, and all you can think about it making the final stretch to the finish line.

If you want some more of this distorted half-metal-half-orchestral music, you should check out Long Live the King from Destiny 1. It’s one of my favorite destiny tracks, and that’s only partially because of how much I love Oryx’s character.
