It's about having a solid plan. Without one you'll most likely be fighting an uphill battle either way. One of my old friends dropped out first chance to start building up money and has been doing pretty good for himself for a while now. A lot of people live rent free for years and could easily pay off a house by 30 with almost any old job but choose to piss that time and/or money away instead. If you're young and know college isn't for you then start saving up money as soon as you can. Especially if you have the chance to do it while not paying bills. Owning property and avoiding a lengthy mortgage by the time you hit 30 will put you ahead of a lot of uni grads.

I mean...the reason the very wealthy send their children to these expensive universities is two-fold. One is to get a degree from a renowned university, and the accreditation which accompanies that. The other, and possibly more relevant in the given scenario, is the access to networking through various organizations with all of the alumni whom were prior graduates.

@@dbz287 You're highlighting the problem though. People are told they need to go to college to be successful, but many don't know what they want to do they only know they NEED to go. So they pick a useless degree without many opportunities at the end. Potentially wasting years of their life. Such people might still do better than average in lifetime earnings regardless, but I think that has more to do with the demographic of people who have the option to waste years on a useless degree. Most people from poor working class families with limited support can't jerk off in college for years to get a degree that leads nowhere. They have to go work a deadend job to make ends meet, so it's not the 'useless' degree helping, it's the background of the demographic. With the exception of stem or high demand qualifications. Virtually no one doing underwater lesbian basket weaving studies is doing better in life BECAUSE of that degree, it's due to them belonging to a privileged enough demographic to jerk off for years and still land on thier feet. Speaking as someone who has been an software engineer for 30 years (Math degree), I would say unless you are a dropout with a very impressive set of GitHub repos and previous work, you need a degree. Not just because the employers look for it, but because computer science is rapidly changing and simple professional training won't cut it anymore. If you want to work at a company like Google, Apple, or Microsoft, and pull down $200k+/yr or more, you need a background that prepares you for these changes. For example, take data science. AI Models are rapidly moving into low-end code generation, and it may very well be in 10 years, a lot of low hanging programming work is simply automated and fewer programmers are needed because of the amplified productivity the tooling will give. If you went to college and studied a lot of "useless" courses that don't apply to everyday corporate enterprise software, you may very well find yourself prepared for this future. When I studied Math in the 90s, it was because I *loved* math, I was passionate about it, not because it was a highly sought after degree. Back then, a Math degree got you a job as an educator or at the NSA. By serendipity, the internet revolution happened, and a lot of Math overlapped with a lot of advanced computer science. My first job out of school was working at IBM TJ Watson research on cryptodigital digital currency and checking, a predecessor to cryptocurrency today. I would say go for Breadth, rather than Depth. Learn from a wide variety of areas to maximize your chances. Just narrowly focusing on a professional degree training in one field may end up dead-ending you if the future turns out differently. College should be about exposing you to a wide variety of ideas, people, and teaching you to learn how to learn. Steve Jobs created the Mac based on a "useless" Calligraphy class he was exposed to that gave him a fascination around fonts. This conservative woman too narrowly thinks of the purpose of college as job training. I think of it as character building. And to pooh-pooh the humanities? One of the reasons why US still dominates in innovation and creativity over places like China is that the Chinese educational system is ruthlessly professional driven and regimented, they don't have the concept of "liberal arts". It is at the intersection of humanities and STEM that we see innovation. To study languages, art, philosophy, politics, psychology AND a technical field makes you better able to address the needs of people. I get why she's mad, she was deluded to think an English degree meant she could work in insurance automatically. Why didn't she do an internship at an insurance company while still in college then? Sounds to me like she just went to class, got her 4.0, but didn't do anything else?

@RayCromwell
@RayCromwell 2 жыл бұрын
@@tonytanner3048 Degrees are already declining in importance in STEM, they get you past the initial filter in a stack of resumes and into the interview, but when I interview people, I'm less concerned with your degree, and more concerned with how you do on the whiteboard, or what previous projects you've worked on. I've interviewed people who have had fantastic, pristine resumes, and then when I asked them to solve relatively simple problems, they couldn't do it. One guy I interviewed from a defense contractor had 10 years of software engineering experience, but couldn't implement a heap, or a recursive decent parser for JSON. And that's kind of the difference between 'professional' training in coding, going to do a few week course to learn HTML/JS or Java/Ruby, etc and someone who has done years of actual computer science classes. Many enterprise companies might be happy with the former, but FANG companies tend to look for 'generalists', and they want more of the latter. However, with a professional training in coding, there are ample jobs out there in the Fortune 500 space.

1,000,000%. That being said, just about every white collar job the last 2 decades requires "4 year degree or equivalent work in related field" so literally the paper of the degree is more valuable than what you learn in those classes. I'm a guy who got a 4 year degree in business economics then became a Database developer and got a second 4 year degree after working as that database developer (employer paid for the second degree) for 7 years. Job experience is way more important to employers than your degree if you've been working for any amount of time. But there is no doubt that a degree is a way more approachable and sensible path to starting a career than finding a business who will take a risk on a high school graduate and let them work a job in a field they have no experience in (or just exploit you by getting you to do a job that typically requires a degree and just pay you 20k less)

@@DonkeyKongaGuru What you said at the end is very common. They will pick a regular kid and just pay less. As a medical student, listening to this discussion was infuriating. I have worked as a medical scribe in several different offices including orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, and family medicine. The notion that doctors "prioritize prescribing medication over natural solutions" is ridiculous. If a patient comes in and their blood pressure is a little high one time (controlling for white coat syndrome), the recommendation from every doctor worth their salt (lol) is diet and exercise. When patients come in a 2nd or 3rd time with HTN, then they get a diagnosis and a recommendation for medication. It is only after the failure of conservative treatment that we go to medications. Also, this kind of "conservative treatments first mentality persists in surgical settings as well. Unless you have a severe injury that requires immediate attention or a chronic history of disease with FAILURE OF CONSERVATIVE TREATMENTS, we generally recommend things like PT, weight loss through diet and exercise, braces, or local injections. No doctor is excited to jump to the biggest gun in the drawer. I can personally say that in medical school, we are taught a method based approach to treating diseases starting with the lowest level intervention first. As a side note, a lot of insurance companies won't cover medications or surgeries without failure of conservative treatments first. Sorry, for the long rant, but damn this talking point really pissed me off.

Same here! I have multiple chronic pain conditions, which means I'm on a lot of medications sure, but my doctor also supports me taking some supplements as long as I discuss it with him first. My urologist has even recommended some supplements to me. I'm also always told about the importance of exercise, physical therapy, eating right. Sure, my doctor isn't going to give me a detailed diet plan to follow, but they can refer me to a nutritionist if needed and can at least give me the basic run-down of basic stuff to eat and avoid.

@@kingofnara You can't outrun a bad diet, what you eat is way more important than going to a gym/exercising for losing weight. And the overwhelming majority of people once they become obese never get back to a healthy weight across their lives. Our infrastructure is really sh'tty for helping people off of or just preventing the issue from developing. It isn't just a simple "why not do it?" No one wants to be overweight, it just takes herculean effort to get back to and maintain a healthy body weight. People should do it, but it isn't simple.

The entire debate is badly framed anyway. The reason someone with a master's degree is usually happier is because they get paid better, have better benefits, and less hours in the job they have gotten as a result of their education, but in a hypoethical world where waiting actually didn't have absolutely dogsh*t pay and benefits, there would probably be a lot people who were perfectly happy doing it. In other words: The problem isn't the job itself, it's what you get for doing it.

I work in the medical device industry as a engineer. Every design conversion we have loops back to how could this feature improve outcomes for patients, usability for users, decrease or mitigate risk, etc. We do tons of validation testing, have very strict quality controls, and much slower release cycles because of the FDA. We can’t make marketing claims unless we have data to back it up and neither can our competitors. Everyone I’ve worked with takes patient safety extremely seriously on an individual, design, and process level. I think the industry selects for people like this, but I think having a regulatory body looking over shoulders is a good thing.

I think if puberty blockers and hormone treatment have multiple long term harmful effects on kids why not wait until adulthood. Over the past 3 years I've applied to about 200 entry Level jobs in my area of study and have gotten one interview in that span of time and was ghosted by the company that interviewed me after follow ups. 30:00 "Cannot compare socialized healthcare systems other countries have to America because America is different" ... because big pharma is making people sick. You know why some doctors prescribe some meds? Because big pharma is paying them to. You know what would help against that? If a large body of experts (instead of a single doctor) evaluated pharmaceuticals on their merits, which ones are the most effective (do the most good for the least cost) and made a decision which one to recommend, support, finance and if they had bargaining power against pharmaceutical companies to lower cost. That's one of the property of universal socialized healthcare systems. So the solution to the "problem" that America is different is to have socialized healthcare system, then it wouldn't be.

As someone who is going back to college at 32, Destiny is 100% correct about a degree becoming more and more of a requirement (even for jobs that don’t NEED a degree). Anyone who says otherwise hasn’t been in the traditional work force in a long time. Even for places that don’t require a college degree you have to be so head and shoulders (either with previous experience or by your performance in the interview) above the rest in order to land a half decent job. Do I agree that more people should consider working in the trades? Yes. Do I think that even with a degree that some of the additional experience requirements are a bit insane? Yes. I shouldn’t need 6 years of experience and a degree for an entry level position. Do I think college is for everyone? No, but pretending like it isn’t a huge factor in making more money is asinine.

A lot of my friends I have met in high school and different places i've worked are doing just fine taking a similar path you are. however, I have to disagree about college just being for the piece of paper. There are definitely certain doors that you cannot open without that college experience. In my case, its been the people you meet and the extra resources a good college gives you. I was fortunate to have experiences in high school that gave me the opportunity to see I wanted to do something in engineering. Initially I thought I wanted to be a mechanical engineer. It wasn't until I started taking courses at university and getting involved in engineering clubs at my college that I realized I wanted to do something in electrical engineering. These connections have allowed me to meet a lot of people who have all given me opportunities in my career I would not have had if I didnt go through a 4 year degree. Then there's the keys to doors you can only get with a 4 year degree. The FE exam is a big one. There are a ton of STEM jobs you will never be able to get without that 4 year degree and the FE exam to back it up. Then there's the jobs in stem you can only get through connections with people at a university. For example, I had a strong passion to do something in the micro-electronics field. My university has a lithography lab open to engineering majors where we can make microchips. That experience is something I couldn't have gotten without going through an engineering degree. The professors who have connections to lots of hiring managers in the micro-electronics industry I would not have met if I didn't go through an engineering degree. Overall I think if you have no strong interests, going to college can allow you to meet people who will change your outlook on what you want to do with your life. However, college is only as good as what you put in. If you just sit around partying, not pursuing internships / co-ops, not participating in extra curricular events, you will get very little out of college. She says a lot of different things here but I think the only things she actually believes are that a degree “is just a piece of paper” and schools are just for liberal indoctrination and every other opinion is downstream of that. And then she throws in a lot of anecdotes to support it and only engages with the actual facts destiny gives in a dismissive hypothetical way, like when she says stuff among the lines of “oh college might be good for specialized fields”, whatever that means. Its all very infuriating to listen to but I think it highlights the mentality of somebody who can’t waver from their opinion that college is a scam. But its a little confusing when she says it. If you work a manual labor job it makes sense that the only people you know in your life didn’t make use of their college degrees. The people that use their college degrees aren’t working in those low skill manual labor jobs and they aren’t living in the same areas they are either. But this person is working in media where a lot of people are using their degrees. So she’s either just hyper fixating on those few anecdotes that she has to the contrary or (and this is the less charitable option) she knows its stupid but is saying it for her audience. I don’t know enough about her to say for sure.

@@az2man it doesn't really take experience or a degree to work as an insurance salesman. you just have to pass an exam and they start you at $11/hr, you move up based on your success and can boost your pay with commission. no offense but the idea that you would need specialized education to do it is kind of hilarious to me as i've worked the job before. i think destiny may have only researched 20 minutes in google and made a bunch of inferences because he went up against someone with a loose narrative. ive also worked in customer service jobs with basically zero experience where ~40% of the people in my training class have a 4 year degree. the sentiment that college is a racket has been around for decades, but it has nothing to do with marxism. it's moreso the idea that you're told the piece of paper is a free ticket to a job, so you can go through any program and there will be a median salary waiting for you. then you have destiny with zero experience or a degree talking to someone from an MSM outlet and making 6 figs. you can say the degree helps bolster your resume, but the compensation you're getting with certain types of education does not match what you spent on it and it can take a really long time to get out of the debt.

The way she debates makes no sense. "College is a scam...but I am not saying everyone shouldn't go..." Huh? So she wants people to get scammed? Why does she say the most inflammatory thing and then backtrack? "Big pharma wants you to buy their drug..." uh...yeah...that is what they make and sell. I grew up in Korea and I do occasionally get non traditional medicine and treatments. I choose it acoording to what has worked for me. When I twisted my ankle playing basketball and the doctors couldnt do anything and it wasnt healing, I got acupuncture and it healed in two days. This is not always the case. No doctor has ever told me to do this or told me they exsist and I dont expect them to. Her argument seems to be that everyone needs to tell her all the options even big pharma and if they dont, they are out to make u sick. They can only offer what they have to offer. Just go do it if it works for u! Why blame them for ur woes? My wife basically has to prescribe medicine to kids for mental health. You dont blame her for doing that, if u want something else, go find someone else. In the end, my wife also didnt like that being the only thing she can do so she quit. "I learned more from waitressing than college..." hearing her talk makes me believe it. It's like she talks in click bate.

Something people don't understand about college, is that even for business degrees for example, they teach you about background theory and general knowledge, not necessarily practical skills because that is your job to go out there and get internships etc... Now, somebody with that amount of background knowledge is actually able to change between jobs and change career directions very rapidly, because they don't have to start from zero again to get and understand the skills required for their next job. However, somebody that has learned a certain practical skill on their own, will have to start all the way from zero again if they want to slightly switch fields. College, imo, gives people the basis to many jobs, and then it is the students' job to build and perfect the practical skills they need for the job they want to do. This, on top of the argument that college builds a competent worker, is why I think it is necessary for all disciplines.

So I get what Destiny is saying that art degrees shouldn't be put down but at the same time, those who get an art degree shouldn't complain that they get paid less because the data tells you what you are getting yourself into.

I can almost guarentee she learned to think and form arguments from having to write papers and defend her views (right or wrong) in college. She's a great orator and that doesn't come from nowhere especially considering her degree had a bend towards language. So she's attacking the very thing that likely helped propel her to the position she's in. She said it herself. She's had numerous roles teaching and you can't do that without a degree. So I'm not sure what her ire is unless she's driven by political ideology and wants to stem the wave of people that learn opposing views in college and get the experience of being around thousands of people unlike themselves and become more world minded.

I agree with both Destiny and this lady quite a bit. As someone who is currently going to college, and working a full time corporate job, its very obvious that most larger organizations wont take anyone seriously without a 4 year degree, however on the flip side of that College is WAY too expensive for what you receive. The requirements to take classes that may have nothing to do with your career path is insane, and a COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME. While you may earn more with a degree, racking up thousands (possibly hundreds of thousands) in debt is not helpful, and quite scary tbh (this is debt that will follow you most of your life, and it only grows as time passes). There needs to be a serious shift in how much it costs or what is required in order to graduate. I genuinely learn more working at my corporate job than I ever have at college, but if you aren't already in a decent company, or don't have a degree, good luck.
@TheJuggernaut88
@TheJuggernaut88 2 жыл бұрын
The lady starts off really strongly opposing colleges as liberal indoctrination money sinks then slowly moves the goal post to a nuanced position as Destiny gives his arguments. Destiny's argument for college is much more compelling. The ultimate answer is obviously there are some people who succeed in college and others who succeed in other paths. HOWEVER, college IS STILL the most viable option for a student out of HS that does not know what to do in life and has no skills. The factual statistics support having a degree that cannot be taken away, demonstrates your ability to be teachable, and gives you access to college resources gives college students a major advantage over non-college students. Colleges provides connections via career fairs, on campus interviews, and internships that would otherwise be almost impossible to achieve without attending college. What you expect to achieve in college depends on how much effort you put into it. College isn't a no effort place to getting free jobs. I don't agree with the lady at all, she has a heavy bias that stems from her own bad experience and assumptions about college campuses.

I love Destiny's approach, and I think there's one argument that's missing from his arsenal that would be very effective. Conservatives like this lady love to talk how they don't think gov is a perfect and all powerful god, and they point out problems they have with how American gov is right now. The thing they should understand is that government is meant to be run by the representatives of the people. So when she says "the community should organize and help" you answer with "yes, and they most effective, optimal way with measurably better outcomes is through the government". The government sucks? Yeah, cause it's reflecting how WE suck. Limiting government won't help the community suck less, but it will effectively rob a lot of people, and poorer communities from whatever agency they had left.

I felt like that was an easy rebuttal as well, the government isn't just some shadowy cabal of powerful people, the government is literally composed of the people, and key positions are occupied by elected representatives. Only seven minutes in, but I think Destiny kind of nailed the point about college; If you go in and screw around all you have done is wasted the experience. More importantly for the discussion from the way this woman talks about college and her own experience in it, it almost sounds like she wasted her own experience, realized as much when she got out into the workforce, and refuses to now admit that she might have fucked up along the way. Again, only seven minutes in, but that's definitely the vibe I'm getting. I'm in college right now and I have been given shitloads of opportunities to get experience in my field and I am just a lowly history education major. The students in my school's business department get tons of hands-on training too and I imagine most schools that offer business degrees are the same.

38:50 I hate this superchat. This a fundamental misunderstanding of how things work. They think that because a doctors spends a lot of time explaining the drug side of things that suddenly the exercise and dieting becomes a footnote, that’s not how it works. Everyone understand how dieting and exercising works, you don’t need a doctor to explain that to you, whereas medicine is hugely complicated. So of course the doctor is going to spend a bunch more time explaining the drug side of things. It’s like having two solutions, a simple one and a complicated one, and then saying “the simple solution is a footnote” because of how long it took to explain the complicated one. It also hugely depends on what issues you have too, it might be that you have a problem that dieting and exercising can’t fix on their own, but they do help a little bit. So a doctor prescribes you a drug to help your issues and says “you should exercise and diet too, it’ll make the healing process faster”. It’s crazy how many people think that doctors don’t think doctors suggest natural remedies to things. I can’t count how many times my doctors have told me I need to exercise more. I have stage 4 nerve cancer and I’ve had it for nearly 2 decades. I have been to hospitals all across Australia and America, I have visited hundreds of doctors and gotten their opinions on my crazy situation. Natural remedies and such were suggested many many times. Cause unfortunately these kids and adults going through cancer are extremely low on hope, so even if these remedies don’t actually work, just giving the patient hope is a huge benefit in the doctors eyes. If you disagree with this you simply don’t know anything about oncology.

So what should everyone eat? And why are cancer patients so low on hope if "standard" treatments are effective?
@dylaroo24
@dylaroo24 Жыл бұрын
@@Dubinski2382 They are low on hope cause you are assuming that these “standard treatments” are effective. If they are so effective then why do I still have cancer after 2 decades? Why do I know at least 10 other people who have also had cancer for around 2 decades like me? Why is the survival rate for stage 4 cancers so low? Why are people so terrified of having a doctor telling them they have cancer if it’s so treatable? You know clearly know absolutely nothing about this topic and didn’t understand a word I was talking about. The point was that treatments don’t work, so kids and adults alike have no choice but to try everything, that includes to natural remedies stuff. Some patients report good effects, other report no effects, but it does no harm so doctors have no problem with it. The doctors often suggest it even as just a way to give people hope, it often happens after a failed treatment. For example I had 14 rounds of chemo therapy, that’s 2 weeks a round and you feel like you are dying cause you literally are. You think after 28 weeks of pain like that and not being able to eat properly that someone will have hope afterwards? You are insane if you think anyone would have hope after going through something like that, certainly not a 8 year old child. So yeah, doctors will try anything to cheer their patients up, even simple things like “Drink this fruit smoothie everyday, they say it has good effects on such and such”. It’s such simple logic it blows my mind you don’t understand it.
@dylaroo24
@dylaroo24 Жыл бұрын
@@Dubinski2382 As for what people should eat, for normal people I would say eat a balanced diet. Do you need me to explain what a balanced diet is? If you have specific issues with certain nutrients or vitamins, then ask your doctor what you are lacking and look up foods to supplement that thing you are lacking, very simple shit, doesn’t require a very long explanation. The conversation can literally be as simple as: Doctor - “you need more fibre in your diet” patient - “So what should I eat then?” Doctor - “Well you could eat fruits like pears, strawberries or apples, avocado is also a good choice, but I recommend you do some research online to find what’s right for you.” The conversation is literally as simple as that. So of course talks about medicine is going to be a lot more complicated then this, but that doesn’t mean dieting an exercise become footnotes, that’s absurd.
