It’s not that he needs to change his behavior, he just needs to select better. I doubt the Aba bridge will burn because he has a stronger connection and it’s founded in reality. Brittany was always illogical from her trauma, everyone hated Lav because she is a liar and was backstabbing from the beginning, and Mr Girl was a shit show from the start. My siblings get mad at me for being insufferable about using specific words, but this is why I'm so anal about that. OPEN-MINDED is when you can hear an idea or thought that differs from your own and understand how it makes sense to the other person, even if you still disagree with their opinion or conclusion. Brittany isn't talking about open-mindedness, though. What she MEANS is receptive, which is ABSOLUTELY not the same thing. And despite the first hour of "was it the grape convo", it wasn't anything on Destiny's end of things. It was solely that Brittany was using the wrong word, AND that she feels like her advice is applicable and good for anyone besides herself. And that's without getting into the level of arrogance involved in being upset at someone for ignoring your unsolicited advice on ANY subject, let alone on a relationship, and especially one that's so unorthodox.

Streamers are constantly egged on by their community to air out these opinions, because people want drama. 4. A subset of these highly opinionated streamers every now and then will make a mistake and cross Destiny's boundaries (which are clearly in place in my opinion). TL;DR: the high chance of these friendship falling-outs with streamers comes from the nature of these people and the business Solution: Destiny should cultivate friendships with less opinionated or non-streamer people and leave the volatile streamer people as casual streamer relationships.

I can see here that Destiny appears to be frustrated due to the same thing, which is someone coming away from an interaction with him and seemingly chosen not to consider what he said and what it means or why it was even said, and instead misinterpreted it, and is disagreeing with that misinterpretation very loudly and publicly. I see why his GF wanted him to speak with her, because the alternative is her possibly seeing this video, for example, and misinterpreting it again without any type of recourse from his end. At the same time, Destiny has a lot of experience debating and dealing with others, and may feel it's hopeless to try and speak with Brittany, because that hasn't resolved problems he's had with others in the past. Maybe, if he desired, he could speak with Brittany and have his GF present to help bridge the conversation, and "translate" what he is saying to Brittany. Again, that's if Destiny desires to do that, and I know he says he doesn't care, but that's probably because it seems like a huge waste of his energy and time, especially if it doesn't repair the perceived "burned bridge". This is basically happening to Destiny where he is ready to deal with the consequences of his dumbass decision making but then an unfathomable consequence of betrayal happens because he fails to understand how he’s made somebody feel self-important and then denying that importance. I feel like all it takes is Destiny disagreeing hard enough on a core view of an orbiter for them to completely flip. Doesn’t have to be anything major, heck it can be an argument about food or other inane stuff, but if it hurts the orbiter’s ego too much, then the bridge will crumble. Hasan hates Destiny now due to a falling out over a political take (which bruised Hasan’s ego). Vaush due to the Rittenhouse stuff. MrGirl burnt the bridge after unsuccessfully begging for hours on stream to get unbanned from Destiny’s subreddit. Lav turned after Destiny stopped treating her with kid gloves. Now Britney turned since Destiny was right about something she thought she was an ‘expert’ on, relationships. Her bringing on a psychologist who agrees with Destiny 100% probably hurt her ego even more after the original conversation. Part of what makes Destiny so successful is his ability to dismantle someone’s ideas and, well, make it look or sound stupid; doesn’t feel good when a friend disagrees with you, feels terrible when they completely decimate your entire worldview.
@rocketrelm1125 Жыл бұрын
That genuinely is it, and I can say it from both personal experience and stuff I see with other people. It varies from person to person, but everyone has core values, often rational, but also often *not*, that if you even disagree with their tribe they will immediately go apeshit. I usually turn the convo away in one way or another before a bridge is burned because I don't care about their opinion on a topic enough to burn said bridge over it. Destiny does not do that. It's not an orbiter thing, it's really a most-humans thing.

I don't think Brittany is a person who would be purposefully uncharitable or malicious to her friends. However, her outrageous views on Sneako and Destiny are wild. I think they might have something to do with her borderline tbh. The borderline in my life always label people into "good" and "bad" boxes, which twists how their perspective on them. I think the rape conversation caused Destiny to be labeled as an untrusted or "bad" person in her brain, while Sneako is still labeled as a "good" and trustworthy person based on his past videos of him an introspective dude. It's a taboo and emotionally charged topic and Brittany is probably an emotionally charged person. In her eyes, if you dont agree with her on that specific topic then you're sort of a shitty person. Shes going to be very prone to bias based on her emotions and jump to black and white conclusions about people. Destiny however is very literal and manner of fact. He also has the same tone of voice when hes talking about how someone genuinely upset him as when someone said something stupid in a debate. Frustrated but not hurt. He still makes jokes mid-rant. Just because he doesnt express hurt in the same way that people are used to, doesnt mean that he doesnt feel it, but people assume this and take advantage

It's kinda funny that this conversation is happening around the same time as the "women being more clear about their boundaries" conversation. Just an interesting parallel between Kyla's/Melina's advice to Steven and Steven's advice to women. Edit: Even the addition of "we're not saying what she (Brittany) did was alright" is the exact same as the caveat of "rape is bad" Edit 2: I'm gonna put the reddit comment I made here since I think it's better than the original comment I made - I think the reason why Steven was pushing back on the generalized advice is that it was inapplicable in this situation, from his perspective Brittany would have done the same if he'd established better boundaries beforehand. This doesn't mean that the generalized advice is useless though. It would be comparable to the people pushing back on his advice for women establishing boundaries to avoid sexual assault if all they said was "this isn't applicable to my experience", but instead it was "this isn't applicable to my experience, therefore the advice is useless". I think that the way that Steven handled the criticism of his poor handling of boundaries in a pretty commendable way, he disconnected the advice from this situation and took it as a general perspective. It was funny to see that every time Kyla or Melina said that "we're not defending what she did" is the same as the "rape bad" caveat but Steven dismisses it since he knows they're giving advice to help in future relationships not blaming him for what happened.

From what I have seen, Brittnay views Destiny as more close-minded than Sneako, even though most people who know Destiny and Sneako well would disagree strongly. After watching Destiny since 2016, I can say that he is one of the most open-minded content creators that I have encountered. However, I think Brittnay is misusing the term "open" and what she really means is "vulnerable." Destiny has entertained a lot of ideas and processed many of his feelings regarding those ideas, which means that when he engages with those topics, he's recalling thinking that he has done in the past rather than creating new thoughts. This gives the impression that Destiny is not vulnerable, and I agree that there's very little at risk. He has already developed his ideas and he's just sharing them with the person he is talking to, rather than processing them in the moment. Sneako, on the other hand, is incredibly vulnerable, whether intentional or not. He does not wear his heart on his sleeve, but he wears it hidden behind a tattered cloak for everyone to see. This is what I think Brittnay confuses for openness. Destiny doesn't really care if you bring up his open relationship; it's an arrangement he has gotten into voluntarily and he can defend it given his own personal philosophy and feelings. Sneako, on the other hand, does not currently defend or endorse what happened with his ex-girlfriend, and because of that, that discussion is significantly more vulnerable for him. Now, add the fact that Destiny has probably already considered and processed most of the criticisms that people could bring up about him, and he has a response to it prepared. He also has a hate for apologies or virtue signaling emotion, preferring to just "not make the mistake again." This creates the illusion to an outsider of him being cold, rigid, and unchanging. Levels of openness, vulnerability, and expressiveness are often correlated in a person, but Destiny is a rare example where he is on polar ends of these spectrums, which I think confuses people or leaves them with an incomplete perception of him. In summary, Brittnay's confusion stems from using the wrong term and not recognizing the difference between openness and vulnerability.

She needs to be the hero and I’m willing to bet she knows things he doesn’t know she does, people she cares about (ie sneak, Mel, Aba, Notso, etc.) are hurt or being hurt by him and she wants to hold him to tasks, call him out, or whatever so her friends aren’t going to continue to be hurt by him. I think as always Dan is right about time being the only factor in all this. The average person might make 1 real friend in 2 or 3 years. I work in a place where a lot of people have the same interests and sensibilities and we get along well but I don’t make genuine friends through that. I think that really connecting with someone requires a perfect storm of characteristics and life circumstance. Destiny seems to have changed his outlook and now is looking for friends and a lot of people will respond to that because of his clout and charisma but that doesn’t change the fact that real friendships are very rare. Shit talking happens all the time in regular life and people are always judging other people’s relationships. He should be incredible happy that out of the 5 or so people he met last year and tried to be friends with he has 2 good relationships in Aba and Kyla. @peterranney9488 Жыл бұрын
This comment will probably go completely unnoticed, but I feel like a big part of this issue comes down to who Destiny chooses to "protect" when they first come on stream. All of the biggest blowups (Hasan, Bad Bunny, Trihex, Lav, Brittany, etc.) that have happened have been with people that he has exerted some leeway in favor of in his community. I think this goes in reverse of a normal friendship/relationship pattern where the longer the relationship is going the more comfortable you would be extending charity to the other person, where Destiny tends to be hyper charitable at the start and then people expect more with time, but there is no more in a public facing position that he can give. This is in contrast to the people that he has had rockier relations with at the start such as Jon Zherka, Tree of Logic, Sneako???, Pisco etc. These people took hard lumps in public and then stuck around, and because of that are much more resilient towards the way that disagreements come across. Best practices, draw up a "contract" explaining to new people appearing on stream that they won't get any special treatment or access to the community, and there is a chance that they will be made fun of by sad people on the internet. This would "set boundaries" in a positive way in regards to the community. It would also be good to include some language about escalation so that your potential debate partners would have an idea about how you see escalation and discourse. Love your content in general.

I think Destiny is someone who can separate emotion from what he believes. He can ask hard questions that go against his beliefs and not be affected emotionally by it. Most people are emotionally invested in what they believe, so when he challenges them. It feels like a personal attack, and they cannot come back from that. I can see this generally affected Destiny, and it's sad that Brittany couldn't just be up front with Destiny.

It can certainly help when discussing topics that you already have formed opinions on, especially when considering those nearly opposite to your own. In my own experience, even just asking questions about another persons beliefs or even about a random topic or subject can often be perceived as a personal attack, and that often leads to them responding differently than if they were able to speak openly and without challenge. I can certainly see how the comparison bothered Destiny, who, even from my limited experience, puts a lot of thought and effort into discussing topics he's interested in or discussing with others. Also, it's unfortunate that Brittany chose to touch on a subject that many would argue is a position that should be approached with humility, and that is, giving advice you may or may not be taking yourself (this doesn't even acknowledge people who are working on taking their own advice, but aren't changing over night AND people you aren't around daily who show signs of improvement, but are easy to miss with limited interaction).

I think Destiny’s problem is actually entirely different than what other people are telling him it is. I don’t think he cares that Brittany is speaking negatively about his relationships on stream or that he has bad opinions when it comes to sexual assault and sex work. I think what he really cares about is how when Brittany talked about those things she also made it implicitly and explicitly clear that she also thought his advice and experience were also negative. That because of his lifestyle and how he talks about these issues publicly, it precludes him from being a source of guidance and wisdom to not only his community but anyone who hears what he says. I think he ties his ego and self esteem very closely with his credibility and experience and how people view his credibility and experience. And when it seems or feels like someone else, who he considers a friend, is invalidating those things publicly his self worth takes a hit. That’s why it catches him so off guard that she’d say the things that she said. It feels like she’s attacking his character. Destiny might talk about another friend of his choices on stream as something that he wouldn’t recommend but he’d never try to also say that person isn’t worth listening to and isn’t capable of having good opinions about those choices.
@deensama7718 Жыл бұрын
Destiny's tendency to paint himself as unbothered and having little to no boundaries effectively dehumanizes him in a subtle but (IMO) very obvious way. Everyone knows that everyone else has a line they don't want crossed somewhere, and most people have smaller lines and impressions that they give off in conversation. Since Destiny doesn't give off those lines in conversation (because he acts so unbothered and boundary-less) people wind up either being extremely skeptical of him as a person (since almost everyone who claims or seems to not have boundaries is severely mentally ill and/or maladjusted in some way) OR they take him at his word and end up pushing all kinds of 'normal' boundaries since he claims to enjoy a lot of that. It shouldn't be a surprise, then, when a percentage of people in the latter group take it even farther and cross serious boundaries. How are people supposed to know you have boundaries around bigger issues if you haven't demonstrated a capacity to set and maintain boundaries around smaller ones? Also I realized that Erudite said like half the things I wrote right after I wrote it, but I think naming it explicitly outside of the context of a live conversation is useful. Melina called it 100% too. I think this pattern is extremely obvious to anyone whos even been watching long enough, and it's probably felt more acutely by people actually interacting with Destiny. That demeanor, dramamongering, and leaning away from emotion is literally self-selecting for Brittanys and Lavs. I think people who struggle with personality issues can easily get subsumed in this type of shit and they're the same types of people who end up being unintentionally emotionally hurt and/or confused by it, which causes a rupture on the end of the more emotionally attuned person and leads to them lashing out in such an unexpected way. That unexpectedness hits the emotionally aloof party twice as hard because they're always leaning away from the parts of the relational experience that might queue them into what's coming. My personal theory is that the same qualities that would let you see a 'betrayal' coming also serve as protective qualities earlier in the relationship forging process, which is why you don't see otherwise well adjusted people go through this very often

Destiny keeps engaging with crazy people (no surprise, they are interesting to talk to), then befriends some of them, and then is surprised when they turn out crazy. For someone intelligent he really seems to struggle with drawing any sort of conclusions when it comes to this aspect of his life. Brittany was/is crazy, it was super obvious to pretty much everyone. And such people can and will do crazy things, their brains just do not follow standard patterns of behavior, they are not consistent etc. And no amount of introspection on their part will fix the way their brains go haywire.
