FYI Sakha, also known as Yakut, is the language spoken in the Sakha Republic, in Siberia, Russia. (that's why it's written in Cyrillic)
@p00bix
@p00bix Жыл бұрын
Sakha is also notable as one of only a handful of indigenous Siberian languages which is still widely spoken, despite more than a century of linguistic minorities being persecuted under the Romanovs and Soviets. Over 90% of ethnic Sakha and over 40% of the total population in the Sakha Republic are fluent in the language. For comparison, Chukchi--which is actually still one of the most successful indigenous Siberian languages, is spoken by only around 50% of ethnic Chukchis and less than 20% of people living in Chukotka. And most indigenous Siberian languages are either already extinct or on the verge of extinction.

What happens with indigenous languages and cultures in Russia is actually quite sad. The territories where the minorities live are also often just constantly pumped out for resources that all go to the big cities... all just like in the good old Soviet times. I wholeheartedly wish those people real autonomy and a future outside of the imperial structure they are now caught in. Edit: A random historical fact about Sakha/Yakut people. During WW2, Sakha people were quite notable among the Soviet army snipers, the most famous of them was Fedor Okhlopkov, Hero of the Soviet Union. Sakha people were very good at developing sniper skills as a nation for which hunting was an important part of traditions and everyday life (similar to Germans and Austrians from the Alpine region in the Wehrmacht).

I asked AI to write a story using some of this as prompts Once upon a time, there was a great empire known as the Sun Empire. They had conquered many lands, but their reign was brought to an abrupt end when the Mongols invaded and conquered them. The Mongols were a powerful force, but their conquest was not without resistance. The Huns, who had once been defeated by the Chinese, saw an opportunity to reclaim their power by selling steamed rice in the area. Meanwhile, Napoleon was busy trying to procure milk. He had heard that he could get it from the Sun Empire, but now that it was under Mongol rule, he was forced to settle for only 2 tons of milk. This wasn't enough to quench his thirst, so he set his sights on another conquest. As he marched towards his next target, he came across a strange book. The book was covered in fruit, so Napoleon decided to paint it before putting it over the fruit. Little did he know that this book held the secret to conquering Venice, the city that had been conquered by Venice. Trajan, one of the great Roman emperors, was known for his love of gladiators. Legend had it that he had tears in his mouth every time he watched them fight. One day, he ordered 5,000 pairs of gladiators to entertain him, but he was left disappointed when they failed to impress him. In frustration, he asked the first bill to ask the question "Is the emperor a child?" The ambassadors of the emperor of Han had been sent to meet with Trajan, but they never arrived. It was said that they had been intercepted by Septimus Severus, who was on a mission to kill the usurper Clodius Albinus. This massacre was so brutal that it continued until the Roman army was defeated. In the end, Sotoru and William teamed up to spread the secrets of the feudal lords of England to the whole of England. They were so successful that Turkey and France both attempted to conquer Persia, but were ultimately unsuccessful. It was Venice, who had learned the ancient secret of conquering Venice, that ultimately triumphed.

@@hotaruishere2133 exactly. No matter how advanced AI gets, it’ll never have the experience that comes with actively living in the cultures you’re translating for. Translation hasn’t been just about finding the right words for a good while now, cultural context & differences are just as important, if not even more so (see the shift from equivalence theory to skopos theory for more info). I work with machine translation a lot, and it’s good enough, but most customers don’t want just “good enough,” especially the ones which actually pay well (e.g. in marketing, medicine and law). Some of them even explicitly ask for translation software to *not* be used in the process. Even if AI does at some point take over the translation process as such completely, human translators will still be needed to post-edit the machine translations and for terminology management.

A few of the things that were read incorrectly: - Caligula is the Roman _Empire,_ not the Roman Emperor. - The Vesuvius volcano either: started growing backwards in time 17 years ago and ended 79 years ago. It did not grow from 17 to 79 years old. - Septimus Severus killed the usurper, rather than being killed _by_ him. - There are developments in the field of middle class housing in Europe. They didn't just develop on their own. - People afraid of sausage didn't migrate from Vienna to Frankfurt, but emigrated out of both those cities. - Castro didn't set a Guinness World Record by being able to sell his clothes. The quantity of takas for which he could sell it is a world record holder. No idea why over 100 takas collectively hold a Guinness World Record, but that's how it is. And some miscellaneous thoughts: - Just because Wales wasn't part of the legal system, doesn't mean it was illegal. The legal system was just ambivalent regarding Wales before. (Similar to how someone who has poor vision but isn't legally blind, doesn't get arrested for illegal blindness) - A diet is like a parliament or senate of sorts, so apparently they secretly passed a law to secularise the country. - Putin probably gave his personal _firearms_ to China, not the ones attached to his body.

I noticed those details about the volcano, the sausage emigration, and Castro's record, but I didn't notice Caligula being the _Empire_ as a whole! Also, the sentences about "the secret of the new diet (Secularization)" (5:44) and Putin selling his arms (12:39) make a lot more sense now! Thanks for the clarification!

Weird Google Translate Wiki page: "In 1654, Ukraine annexes Russia." Vladimir Putin: "Hold my vodka! Let's make history!"
@woefulfisher
@woefulfisher Жыл бұрын
Putin is a loser, but read about 1654, it's pretty interesting. Zaporojan Cossacks (the pirates of the steppe, who convicted raids) from Ukraine decided to leave Poland and to join Russia, so they sent the delegates to Tsar Alexis. And their hetman (or chiefman), Bohdan Hmelnytskyi, called himself a "самодержец руський", or the "Russian statesman". And the documents refer to the Ukraine as "the Russian Land", compared to the Liah-ish, or the Polish Land. So it brings 2 conclusions: A) There was never an independent state named "Ukraine" up until the beginning of 20th century; B) Until the age of Soviet Union, those people called themselves "Rusyns", there was no Ukrainian nation. It's an artificial construct created by the Polish intellectuals and Bolsheviks.

Where can I buy clothes? Red sky I'll see you tonight Circle the pie Illness at home Mobile number The world's greatest enemy How big is the castle? They are fools I will kiss you tomorrow Water flow How much power does the government have? . Where are you fleeing? Domestic violence I want a rabbit Wash your feet BTL for bars and bars Playing in the grave or in the dark Man . Well, it's not bad. Achilles is here with you.
