It will help keep her active. My old dog lived almost 2 years longer by having a puppy companion. Nicki also did all the right things slowly introducing Holly & Indie and ensuring they would get along before committing.

Dogs are pack animals and enjoy each others company to play. My friend keeps dogs for people going on vacation. She videotapes them playing in her garden and house and they are all compatible, chasing and rolling around. It's the best thing to watch them. She puts a cover on her king size bed where they all sleep together. You are so thoughtful of Holly and all the animals in your care.

I sympathise with the 'guilt' over Lily, I had a cat who was similarly sociable but 'stand offish' and I didn't notice how much weight she'd lost. The comfort is that you understand your girl and she lives and is treated on her terms. And Indie with her was a heart melter ❤

A puppy is a great idea for older dogs, keeps them young and active 💜

It's good depending upon the older dog in question. It is NEVER an automatic good thing. Some older dogs or cats do not want a lively puppy or kitten jumping on them, biting their faces, pulling on their tails, trying to engage in play constantly. Some seniors do NOT respond happily to the interruptions and noise and pestering. That's why you do meet and greets away from home. If the senior isn't happy don't force it! You wait until the senior dies or you bring home 2 puppies or 2 kittens to play together and leave the senior alone. It totally depends upon the senior and a good owner recognizes which decision the senior would be happiest with, not what the owner wants. In this case Holly is fairly active though getting a little old for the HUNDREDS of steps and should be taking something for her joints but she enjoys the play and if she has to stay home she has a companion. Some people may have had seniors who didn't want company and that's their experience. Don't put them down because their opinion doesn't match yours. It is not a given that all seniors want or need a younger pup or kitten. I have had cats who must have tolerated other cats in the home but when they became solo in the home finally relaxed because more loving and playful because they were alone when they never used to be so a new cat was never introduced until they departed. It's up to the senior!

Oh Nikki, I know from experience how hard it is when a much loved pet becomes ill and I know it is easy to question your own actions. The fact is animals are very good at hiding things when something is wrong. They may be a pet, but they still have their survival instincts (In the wild, show a weakness and a predator will target you). If only we could truly talk to them! Your family have given Lily a wonderful life, and you should be proud of that! I have no doubts that you have always and will always do the best for her as you do all your animals.

Anyone who has ever owned a dog knows it's smart, when the first dog gets older, to bring a youngster into the household. The older dog is stimulated by the puppy and knows it's a baby.....and therefore, can teach the new one specific behaviors as well as becoming a companion as the older dog ages. It's a great idea - don't pay any attention to the haters. They clearly have no idea what they're talking about. Anyone can see how you love all of your animals and how you take extraordinary care of them. Kudos to you for having Indie - Holly will love the company and you have clearly done your research so Holly will not feel left out and the little one will keep her spry and entertained as she gets older.

I had a twelve year old Golden Retriever who welcomed a young three month old Goldie into the family. The old dog got a new lease on life, playing with the pup, wanting to join in walks again, sleeping together & in general it was the best thing I ever did for both dogs. Holly & Indy relate so well to one another & hopefully will have many happy years of companionship together.

People forget that in the wild, dogs live in packs and therefore take to another dog much easier than people give them credit for. I totally agree with what you said and did, as well as how you introduced Indie to Holly. Even though Holly is older, it doesn't mean that she doesn't want to still play and have the companionship of another dog. If anything, having Indie might extend Holly's life even more!

So exciting to get a new kitchen! I've been designing the one in my new house for months. I'm sure yours will be done way ahead of mine. Wish Carlo was my contractor! I'm so sorry about Lily. My pup had lymphoma and the massage therapist found the lump; I probably would not have found it until it got too big to treat. We were able to keep him for another 1.5 years with chemotherapy, and I treasured each day. Thankfully, they live in the moment. Your pets are very lucky to have you all as a family with lots of places to roam and play. It's truly a paradise for pets.

Lily doesn't seem to be in any pain which is what matters most. She was purring and calm. Some cats are like that and you do not realize they are hurting until it is very late. People are quick to judge. As I sit here in the midst of a March snowstorm it was so lovely to see your beautiful garden. I love that you are designing your own tile which can be produced by local artisans. Not many of us have that luxury.

I'm sorry to hear that people made mean comments about you getting a new puppy. I've had dogs for over 55 years. As an adult, I've always brought a younger dog in when my older dog is in the twilight years. Once introduced, I've found that the elder dog has a renewed lease on life and seems younger with the pup. The elder dog also helps train the pup to an extent. I love how carefully you treat your pets and they are so happy. Please dont let mean ppl dim your enjoyment. Hugs.
