When I was 8, I was at a game store and could choose exactly one game. I had narrowed my choice down to either Destruction Derby 64, or Beetle Adventure Racing. I had never seen either games anywhere else before, and knew nothing of either one. I will say that I chose DD64, and to this day, I still have the cartridge and feel that I made the right choice. Also, when I was 8, I legitimately expected Destruction Derby 65 to come out. I asked the cashier at the store every time I visited if they had a copy of it. >_>

The bad reviews don't bother me one bit. When I was in the early grades in school, my mom and dad dropped by Blockbuster which was around during that time, rented this game and I immediately got hooked. Car #9 was my preferred vehicle. Later I wanted to own it but soon N64 games were taken out of the stores and my chances of adding it to my collection faded but not the memories of playing countless times on The Junkyard. But fast forward to my birthday in 2012, a store in a nearby city happens to keep a large collection of N64 games in stock. Inside I found the game cartridge which is in almost mint condition, finally fulfilling my years long destiny of owning the game. Good times

Excellent review as always, Glenn. I just finished the singleplayer career mode (Championship, all leagues) on an actual N64 and got at least some enjoyment for a bit of time out of it. It's fairly quick to get through the whole championship, it took me around 3 hours. Just to add to your points: What threw me most off in DD64 were two things. First, there were massive frame drops on the racing tracks due to a lack of optimisation. We are speaking about an average of 15FPS on an unmodded N64 when there were more than five burning cars around the track. Lowest I had was an average of 9 frames on the snowy track which was unplayable. Second, I the AI programming of the other cars threw me off many times, most noticeably in the arenas. Their programming routine seems to be rather straightforward: Intercept the human player and try to smash into them at all costs. This was such a mind-numbingly simple routine that competitors went absolutely crazy when using the backwards gear in places like the arena; the PCs tried to escape from me like a conversation partner would if you used too much garlic for your food. Try it out, I got a good laugh out of it. All in all, I got some fun out of the game but the ridiculous AI and the massive frame drops overshadowed the experience, unfortunately.

This game rocks, it is so much fun! There is a down side, though! In the usual video game fashion, it takes a while to learn how to control the car. Also, the other cars(computer operated) have the advantage of going faster and being able to avoid impossible to avoid situations. You can be heading straight for a car, and you're going to hit going 150 mph! You get all pumped, but somehow, the computer's car just goes right around you! It is beyond me. I guess it is just the regular computer gets to cheat thing, but that does suck. But as you get better and get better time in the races, you get hidden cars. That's fun! I liked this game! It's a butt-load of fun!
@jlewwis19959 жыл бұрын
I don't feel like that AI cheats in this game. I mean, when I'm in one of the starter cars- which the AI always use- it feels like they go the exact same speed as you, no faster no slower. Which can actually be a bad thing at times I guess, especially when the only cars surviving are driving in the same direction as you -_-. As far as Crash avoidance goes, I'd have to say that the AI is NOT particularly adept at avoiding crashes, hehe. In fact, I would say they get themselves in more trouble than they give :P Especially on some tracks like Destruction Junction and Bayou Run where the AIs seem to get completely confused about some parts of the track for reason... Also the thing the guy in the video mentioned about the starter cars being too weak isn't an issue if you know the proper strategy of how to USE your car... that is to say, you have to use your rear as often as possible, and aim for the other cars fronts as often as possible with your rear. This can be done pretty easily on the road tracks by waiting for the other guy to get near you, then immediately use an ebrake turn to pull a 180 and immediately hit reverse to keep your forward speed going then aim for the other guy while driving backwards. Pretty easy. Or at least, it would be if it weren't for... The camera... out of all the things I could not like about the game, its the camera. The third person camera in particular. Doesn't matter if its the close view or far view, I just can't drive with it, which is saying something since my dad bought the game for me when it first came out and I played it consistently for at least 10 years, then played occasionally after that, so you'd think I'd be able to get enough experience with it to be able to use it, but I just can't. It's the same way with Ridge Racer 64. Another thing I don't like about the third person camera in this game in particular is that when you try to look behind you, there is this weird swinging animation of the camera which I've never seen in any other racing game. It's very distracting, slightly disorienting, and overall useless. Why they put that in there I have no idea. If you got people who hate the game to play it with the 1st person camera they would probably enjoy it much more.

I thought Destruction Derby and DD2 were rubbish on the PSX, especially compared to Jet Moto or Rally Cross. DD64 seemed more like a mock-up for Burnout than anything. I really enjoyed this game as a kid. I had played Road Rash 64 prior, and this felt like something between racing and that. I was a big fan of Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing, loved the MK battle mode. In this game, I loved the arenas, but I was also a big fan of the racing demolition. Trying to work with the race mechanics itself was definitely the way to go at the beginning, with the weak cars. I'd try my damnedest to push them into walls and especially hazards to crash them, so I didn't have to beat my car up as much.
@IcePakOG2 жыл бұрын
I had the opposite response to this game to you, Glenn. I loved it. The tracks are great and so are the arcade physics and point system. I take your point that some races can become dull when seeking the last car. And while a rock or metal soundtrack would have been better suited to the action, the techno tracks help keep the racing tense.

I kinda regret not picking this up at this record store I saw it at a couple weeks ago. I can see why some of the bad parts could get annoying, but it still looks quite fun. I've never played any of the PS1 games (I plan to remedy that), but I tried this the other day. I had quite a bit of fun with it and ended up playing through the lowest level of the championship. I share your criticism that it's too easy to rack up points and get first place in the races by just smashing into the other cars, but I can live with that. My one major disappointment with the game was that they didn't include the option to play pure races where all the cars are going in the same direction and placing first requires beating the other cars. I actually like the tracks, and think that they'd be fun to race on, but these aren't real races. It's just a free-for-all while doing laps on the track. While I found that fun, it would be nice to be able to just race without worrying about slamming head on into a car coming from the opposite direction. I'm not suggesting that they should have included a whole career mode for it, but just the option to set up a single race on any unlocked track would have been nice.
@lurkerrekrul3 жыл бұрын
OK, I've now tried the three Destruction Derby games for the PS1 and to be honest, I didn't think much of them. The first game has boring tracks and horrible control. It doesn't support analog controls at all and trying to drive around narrow tracks with the D-pad makes me want to punch the screen. The second game supports the NeGcon controller, which I set up in the emulator. That made the control marginally better although the car handling still sucked horribly. It was like trying to steer a giant block of concrete around the track. I kind of liked Destruction Derby Raw though. At last it was playable. I also tried Destruction Derby Arenas on the PS2, but my system isn't fast enough to properly emulate that one. Seemed like it would be fun if it wasn't in slow motion.
@charlieg6913 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I wish so much that they'd give you the option just do regular races in this game sometimes. The tracks and cars would be so fun for that. Seems like it would have been so easy to add and previous DD games had races like that in them. Oh well.

My brother and I had destruction derby on the pc and utterly loved it, mainly the bowl championships, going up through the leagues... Built up real rivalries with some of the computer players. So we were buzzing when it finally came to the n64 but I remember being reeeaaaaallllllyyyy disappointed with it. Like the guy says the races were a farce. Shame.

Just checked the wiki, they've been owned by Sony since 93. Really a rarity, all I can think is Psygnosis were sort of allowed to do their own thing while Sony settled into their Playstation business properly. lol not much further for me either matey I'm just down the road from you in Doncaster :-)
