Update from last video.....water now high enough to short out electrical plugs in the basement. The level is almost at the bottom step.

My home was completely destroyed twice from hurricane Floyd and Irene and the basement flooded almost to the ceiling three separate times. Shutting off the power is a must in order to keep any possible fires from happening. Some times sump pumps are not able to even come close to keeping up.

Ouch, I never had to go through something like that. We got around 7 inches total in the basement this time. I'm just glad that nothing caught fire.....in fact, my breaker never tripped, just kept on zapping until the water went down. I'll probably invest in some sort of portable pump after I research them.

This storm didn't seem so serious before I went to sleep. Woke up in the basement stepping in water. I'm glad my area wasn't so bad because I was on a plugged air mattress and that would have been my death bed. Thank God.

Isn't there a big lever on the outside of your house? You can pull that to cut all power.

Bort Plate My only disconnect short of cutting the power lines, is the double breaker in the basement. My house is 60 years old though, newer houses might have an outside disconnect. I tried calling the power company (DTE) during the event, but never got off hold. The breaker never turned off, but the water drained a few hours after I posted. Washer and dryer are fried, my hot water heater may be too. Luckily my fridge and deep freezer survived.

Scary! As far as I know it, arcing sockets can not only electrify the water, they can also start a fire.

triton115 That's what I was afraid of, luckily nothing too bad happened. I lost a few appliances and some furniture, but came out much better than folks in my neighboring suburbs. They lost everything in their basements.

The basement is the worst place to place the breaker box...

Ellis Shaw That must have hurt like hell, I installed a 30 volt solar system and stripped the wires with my mouth. Had the panel facing up in bright sun light and was quite a shock. Can't imagine how AC power would feel. Like a torture device you'd see in a movie.

I also live in MI. Luckly an hour north but this flood is everywhere on FB and youtube. I searched this video and came to realize I was already subbed to you lol.

Joeldude76 LOL, This whole time I've lived here, I never though I'd have to deal with a flood. Tornado, snow, but never a flood. I went to a few hardware stores and everyone already grabbed all the bleach and mops. Everyone within a 20 mile radius of me got hit pretty hard. Thanks for subbing man!

I have never seen anything like this in my 20 years of existence in MI. Although once it flooded at the end of our driveway about three and a half feet.

that is nasty, that is why we installed a sump pump years ago works great.

We usually don't have too many problems with flooding in my area, but I think now I'll get some sort of portable pump. The worst thing about this is, I just fixed the washer machine and now its done for. Thankfully the water went down, just have to figure out what all it destroyed tomorrow.

***** That stinks... look on the bright side of things, with the flood insurance, you will be able to get all brand new things.

No sump pump would have stopped this flood - the streets are flooded, the sewers, and many peoples basements. So sorry Battery Geek - hopefully insurance claims aren't a total pain

I didn't think of that, I'll take a look at the meter to see how to pull it.

Thanks man, the water drained back out a few hours after I posted. Now I just have to wait a few days to see if any appliances will still work. I actually found a huge turd sitting near my utility room door, where the main drain is.......will be buying a bunch of bleach tomorrow.

Raul Porkuu I looked at it earlier today and it looks like the original meter from 1954. Thing is rusted shut and looks kinda dangerous. The guy who reads the meter said he could hardly read it. I'll definitely look into getting a new one installed.
